@kiasoresrex Not too hard, a bit of cutting if you want to do it right and preserve handling. Flyin' Miata do a kit and have lots of documentation etc, and I think there are a couple of other kits out there. Google is your friend.
It's got a Ford 8.8 differential with a 3.55 gear ratio and a t56 6-speed transmission out of a camaro. So 4cyl gearing I think not.....
oh and by the way we hadn't adjusted the throttle linkage yet when we did this video so it was only opening about 3/4's of the way. Lets just say it pulls much harder now :)
@Araki0ikarA I'm not sure if that stock (looking) tach matches up...were you shortshifting? it sounded as if you were which may be the reason for the mix up. If you were please post a video of you not short shifting, and how hard does it pull? If you were not...then I will admit that I am stupid good sir.
@Araki0ikarA I'm agreeing with 3ash here. I'm sure it's a solid rear end, but Those gears are waayyyy short. Go to at least like 3.73s man... That car is probably under 2200 lbs and >350 hp... You don't need freaking 3.55s. 80mph should be in third.
@Araki0ikarA I'm agreeing with 3ash here. I'm sure it's a solid rear end, but Those gears are waayyyy short. Go to at least like 3.73s man... That car is probably under 2200 lbs and >350 hp... You don't need freaking 3.55s. 80mph should be in third, fairly early. I mean you hit 60 in second so not too bad. Just goes through them too quick. barely spending anytime in gear.
@Araki0ikarA the gearing is right if the car weighed another 1000 lbs lol. Put a 3.27? (next step taller?) in it. I think I posted freaking 3.73 earlier, I meant 3.27, but (as it is now) it was very very early in the morning. swweeeet ride though
@accordv6er Word. Although some people have used 3.73s in these cars, the ones that I've talked to that have ran 3.73s regretted it and only did it for a short time....so you're right on the money here. I'm using 3.31s and an 8.8 in my current build, and know that I won't regret it. Good MPG, and plenty of go-fast!
@Araki0ikarA hm really? looks super short still... Partly just so much power it could turn taller gears. do they make taller ones for the 8.8? something to get to about 75 in second? Just curious. Looking at doing an LQ4/LS4 (same as LS6) or LS3 heads on standalone, with an 8.8 (of course.) So hoping there are taller gears available... Considering LS4/T5 but thatd be more fab work
@f34rthe4banger the miata tranny doesn't bolt up. you change the tranny to the engines class matched transmission and change the rear end to accommodate the new engine and trans.
Which means that you're car was in "limp mode" and not running as well as it should. I'll bet it's a bit quicker with all of the DTCs deleted in the PCM.
It certainly wasn't in "limp mode", but we later found out that the cause of the check engine light was that we didn't have the intake air temperature sensor hooked up properly. Which caused the car to run rich. Now that it's hooked up, it's running much better. Other than that, there were no other error codes that showed up.
I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that it should never have gone into "closed loop" with a CEL thrown. That's what I'm meaning by "limp" mode. STFT's and LTFT's should have "helped" if it did go into CL mode. That's all that I was meaning. On a side note, have you had the chance to run it in the 1/4 yet? Also, how many RPM's is it turning at 70mph with the 3.55's? Why I ask, is that I'm not sure which way I wanna go on mine, and the gearing is the last part to decide on.
@TheArfdog Damn, your ignorance is astounding. The very fact that a CEL is on means that whatever sensor triggered the DTC IS....wait for it..... BEING IGNORED and the PCM uses default values. In this case, it was the IAT not even being hooked up....so the PCM decided to use a "safe" value table that just so happened to make the car go rich. Just so you know, RICH=less power (generally), but is better than going too lean. But hey, you obviously know EVERYTHING about EVERY and ANY car. LMAO!
@salemetro Umm default values don't mean "limp home" values.... And rich does NOT equal less horsepower. lmao, you instantly lost all credibility right there. Rich equals more power up to about 20% rich....
If you're talking about rich with all other things being equal (timing, etc) then I'd agree. But In this case, rich DOES = less power....as the PCM should have defaulted to less aggressive timing, as well as SUBSTANTIALLY richer AFR. The PCM had NO IDEA what the IAT was. I'll agree to the 20% statement, as there's no denying it....when correctly changed in the tune. So I'll ask again: If default values aren't the same as "LH" values, what exactly is?? In this car/platform, they are the same.
@salemetro Anyway the CEL does not mean limp home. It means something is amiss, which may or may not be critical to engine operation. The only thing the CEL tells you is there's something wrong (minor or major) with the emission controls. And what equals less power is retarded ignition timing, not AFR enrichment. They are not directly related.
@TheArfdog Unplug a Maf, it'll read from the MAP "fairly well". Unplug an IAT, TPS,O2,etc...the car can often still run "fairly" decent. These PCMs are not as "dumb" as old school PCMs.....they adapt much better. CELs are ABSOLUTELY NOT only related to emission controls. Do a search for GM "generic" OBDII codes, and you'll see. If a CEL is on, whatever sensor that caused the code is ignored and the PCM goes to default tables where possible.... Timing/AFR can BOTH be affected by just 1 DTC.
@TheArfdog Lastly, even the OP stated that the car ran better once they figured out that the IAT was screwed up and fixed it....which goes a long way to prove my original point. If we're going to argue over the definition of "limp home mode"....then I'll just have to say that 411 and e34 PCMs DO NOT HAVE a "limp home mode" as you're trying to define it. They adapt much better than old PCMs.
@jasonking959 ROTFLMAO.... Wrong!! So, you've never seen a car do 100 while stuck in O.L?? (open loop for you nOObs) Look man, If ya wanna disagree, fine....but there's no reason to be a jackass. When a DTC is set, generally, the PCM ignores that sensor data and goes to default values....default values are a "best guess" as to what is actually going on with the engine, and definitely NOT optimal. ------PWN
@jasonking959 Really? So tell me, what qualifies as "limp mode" on a 411 PCM then, genius?? Or an E34 for that matter? What...do you think the car is just going to run to 20mph at best? Your fail is painfully epic. Not only are you an imbecile, but you bring "stupid" to a whole new. Now, go put on your little troll helmet so you don't hurt yourself, and go outside to wait....the short bus will be there soon to take you to school.
@salemetro Don't know what limp mode you're talking about then.
Only limp home mode that I know of with transmissions is the first gear limp mode ; where the transmission will stay in first gear to prevent further damage to the transmission.
@trikstadude3 What Gear the vehicle drives in Limp Mode depends on the Codes that were flagged by the PCM. If it senses shift solenoids from one gear to the other say 1-2 solenoid isnt working it starts in second and if its 2-3 solenoid it starts iin 3rd to allow you to get home as soon as possible without damaging the Transmission and engine but starting 3rd gear makes your shit over heat like a mofo,
Such a simple swap to do if you have 15,000-20,000$ to spend def beats buying a corvette
