I absolutely love this movie so much! I read the book often. Duras' delivery of these lines has inspired me to plan a visit to Nevers, France. Leaving on Nov 3rd for the International Jazz Festival a Nevers! See you all there! Next is Hiroshima!
This movie is so intriguing and elegantly beautiful. . . I rented it from a library and bought the film the next day. Another great film by Resnais was "Last Year at Marienbad". I enjoy watching Criterion and art house films! Even though I'm still young, I adore Ozu, Kurosawa, Pabst, Blier, Renoir, and so on. . .
I have one question: Duras was said to have based most of her works off of her own personal experiences. Which elements of her life does this illustrate?
@mystarwood I read your comments on Hiroshima Mon Amour and it made me happy as I love this movie. And Last Year at Marienbad is wonderful too. issues of memory and love. Duras did use her personal experiences. So intense. Given what you have written I think you would like Before the Revolution by Bertolucci---which I think is the greatest film of all time. You can see it in its entirety on youtube. Anyway thanks for your comments.
Well, this is a classic. And of course I like a classic, that's why they're classics to begin with. I MUST say though, this movie is just dull. So dull, that I think DULL really sums up the whole experience. Not doll, dull. Well, I guess you really have to buy in to the hype to appreciate this.. dullness.
can someone explain this scene to me? was that cellar a dream? what does she mean by her lover being dead when hes sitting infront of her.....or was she talking about her dead lover
One of cinema's great masterpieces, as recognised when it came out. If it appears less now in critics' lists, that says more about how our time and judgments have slipped than the value and quality of the film.
"Notes from Earth" by Jonathan P. Chance is the 21st Century fusion of "Hiroshima Mon Amour" and "Dr. Strangelove". Why did they kill Stanley Kubrick?

She's talking about her dead German lover. The cellar was a memory.
