Those could be infrared leds. When filming with a digital camcorder/camera it picks up infraled light. Just try taking your digital camera, look into and point any tv remote at it and press some of the buttons on the remote. You will see white light on the camera, but our eyes can't see that infrared light.
and there you have it, a sensor bar for under 10 bucks. radio shack is a holy place indeed. you could use the change from the 10 and buy some Silly Putty or clay to make a place for the batteries to stick in place. just as simple as two LEDs and 2 "AA" batteries? you, sir, are an FYI master.
