This was wonderfull! All old recordings (60 yrs +) of this tune were done with marginal recording quality. That makes it not very reasonable to compare them.
wonderfully sang by Leona - but the song becomes something else, it loses the original version totally. Leona has a sensational voice but there are other songs that fit her voice better than Summertime. I am glad that we have the opportunity to hear it and thank the person who posted it!!

So many strange comments, this girl gives me goosepimples when she sings, she could sing the yellow pages and release it as a single.You are watching a true singing star that history will record for us all.

she exagerated a lot. this originally was a song that the black slaves sang while working on the cotton fields. but this feeling got lost here in some ways. i can understand that this is the commercial adaption and i liked her voice. but it just didn't fit to this song - and she neither. maybe because she's not black but the very more she just couldn't bring the feeling this very authentic way ella fitzgerald did.

@Astfresser I think you are mistaken. This song was composed by George Gershwin and written by DuBose Heyward and it was originally an opera aria in Porgy and Bess. In fact it was based off of a Ukrainian Lullaby. The opera Porgy and Bess however was about African American culture in the 1920's. So not sung by black slaves while working in the cotton fields, and Leona is half black and absolutely nailed this song.

I watched only a personal demonstration. There is not true emotions and she's not singing summertime. Just a Commercial interpretation. Even if the vocal performance is perfect, she's lying.

I'm going to put my two cents in on comparing this performance with Fantasia's. This was very good, don't get me wrong, but Fantasia took the cake, ate it, and licked up all the crumbs and extra icing! She gave a heartfelt performance, and dug extra deep to belt out the song like she did. For real, her performance of this song had my eyes stinging from fighting back the tears, her performance was so powerful! Now, Leona gave a very good performance here, but Fantasia wears the crown:)
she seems really nice though, and is a great singer and a true success, but relatively speaking, I think she was just slightly overstated somehow... which is strange and unfortunate.
This is just so much better than fantasia version. Way better! Week 3 too. I remember watching this on tv back then and thinking, she's won it already. Love this woman and her talent.
@shadowskink Anyone who gives the thumbs down on either version is lying. Both were and are very good indeed......but..... in your and my opinion, Leona gave the better performance. From the moment the first noise came from her lips, my skin went tight and the hairs jumped to attention on every inch of my body. As you said, only in week three and she gave us that world class performance. Outstanding.
She did a lovely rendition, I agree, but she really didn't capture the feel of the song.. which is sad. My vision of it goes like this. A child asleep in her lap (dunno if that's legal), and her singing with PASSION about what this child has t6o look forward to because Momma AND Daddy are standing by. She could have been in a shift.. a very light gown worn to show how hot it really was... The girl has a lovely voice, regardless.
Beautifully done! I think it comes down to which (or maybe both do) version stirs something within you; for me Fantasia's version made me really feel the emotions.

I don't feel anything either when I listen to Leona's version of "Summertime". I just hear a bunch of loud notes but no heartfelt connection to the song. Whatever happened to trusting in the song material and letting the song speak for itself? If you trust in the song material and the emotions that it evokes you won't have to worry about showing off your vocal range because you will be so involved in the song and the lyrics.
I can understand why Jazz purists don't like her version, but they are forgetting that this was a talent contest, and she had to make a powerful impression on the voters. She can do restrained and understated but this wasn't the time or place.

@keirfree That analogy doesn't really apply. Thousands of performances by jazz artists, in a jazz style has turned it into a jazz standard. Any decent jazz musicians know the melody and changes to summertime. Not to mention many of Gershwin's compositions including Porgy and Bess were influenced by jazz, as he himself composed many jazz tunes.

she exagerated a lot. this originally was a song that the black slaves sang while working on the cotton fields. but this feeling got lost here in some ways. i can understand that this is the commercial adaption and i liked her voice. but it just didn't fit to this song - and she neither. maybe because she's not black but the very more she just couldn't bring the feeling this very authentic way ella fitzgerald did.

@Astfresser I think you are mistaken. This song was composed by George Gershwin and written by DuBose Heyward and it was originally an opera aria in Porgy and Bess. In fact it was based off of a Ukrainian Lullaby. The opera Porgy and Bess however was about African American culture in the 1920's. So not sung by black slaves while working in the cotton fields, and Leona is half black and absolutely nailed this song.

its funny, she chose that song, huh..........im sure she saw when fantasia did her version on american idol. fantasia did it perfectly!!!!! and no one, can out do her version of summertime, no one. fantasia hit it right on the spot!!!!! she got a naturally soulful voice. and here leona figures that the higher & louder she sings , the better the song sounds. she tried to put too much into the song. she could have toned it down a little.

I watched only a personal demonstration. There is not true emotions and she's not singing summertime. Just a Commercial interpretation. Even if the vocal performance is perfect, she's lying.

I'm going to put my two cents in on comparing this performance with Fantasia's. This was very good, don't get me wrong, but Fantasia took the cake, ate it, and licked up all the crumbs and extra icing! She gave a heartfelt performance, and dug extra deep to belt out the song like she did. For real, her performance of this song had my eyes stinging from fighting back the tears, her performance was so powerful! Now, Leona gave a very good performance here, but Fantasia wears the crown:)

This is just so much better than fantasia version. Way better! Week 3 too. I remember watching this on tv back then and thinking, she's won it already. Love this woman and her talent.

@shadowskink Anyone who gives the thumbs down on either version is lying. Both were and are very good indeed......but..... in your and my opinion, Leona gave the better performance. From the moment the first noise came from her lips, my skin went tight and the hairs jumped to attention on every inch of my body. As you said, only in week three and she gave us that world class performance. Outstanding.

She did a lovely rendition, I agree, but she really didn't capture the feel of the song.. which is sad. My vision of it goes like this. A child asleep in her lap (dunno if that's legal), and her singing with PASSION about what this child has t6o look forward to because Momma AND Daddy are standing by. She could have been in a shift.. a very light gown worn to show how hot it really was... The girl has a lovely voice, regardless.

can't believe Simon made that statement regarding, "all the girl singers"... well if you listen closely enough, he seems to be refering to that particular season of "female singers" ..?...because Kelly Clarkson has a much more distinctive and wholesome voice than Leona (longevity speaks for itself) ...and Fantasia sang this song leaps and bonds better when you forget the bells and whistles or falsetto's and high notes... pure sultry meaningful vocals, Fantasia hands down sang this better, easy.

Ahh the good old days when xfactor produced talent and wasnt an overreated money making scheme controlled by steryotypes. Leona is one of the few to be really successful and i can bsoloutley see why. I went to see her in June and she was completely amazing Ive never hear danything like it

You know, for shows like these, they look for originality. So what if she didn't sing it as jazzy as you wanted it, or the way Fantasia did it. Leona sang it her way, and I liked it.

NOT EVEN CLOSE to being as brilliant as Fantasia's verson. Sorry. Just a bunch of screaming & trying to emulate Fantasia's riffs. Listen to the end of Fantasia's verson, then listen to Leona's. It's almost like she listened to Fantasia & tried to duplicate her licks ALMOST EXACTLY. Leona is just dull. Good voice, but the personality is non-existent, in my opinion.

This is a fantastic and beautiful performance, but Simon is buckwild crazy if he is trying to say that Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia aren't as good of singers as Leona! And has he forgotten Fantasia's version of "Summertime" from Idol? Fantasia's rendition was the best performance I have seen on ANY singing show -- it was absolutely amazing!

Whatever happened to trusting in the song material and letting the song speak for itself? If you trust in the song material and the emotions that it evokes you won't have to worry about showing off your vocal range because you will be so involved in the song and the lyrics.

She has a beautiful voice but this song is not for her. I'll stick to Fantasia's version! When Fantasia sings it you can tell she feels it! Leona just sings it and makes it cute.

@keirfree That analogy doesn't really apply. Thousands of performances by jazz artists, in a jazz style has turned it into a jazz standard. Any decent jazz musicians know the melody and changes to summertime. Not to mention many of Gershwin's compositions including Porgy and Bess were influenced by jazz, as he himself composed many jazz tunes.
