Smithsonian mag recently ran a story on Russian "Star Wars". the Kremlim was spending out of control and scared to death of what they thought the Americans were up to. Gorbachev put the brakes on it.
each country was pretty much neck and neck in terms of production and timing, its just that Russia was in such a hurry and got all their stuff up first while America was concerned with checking and rechecking everything, almost to the point of stupidity.
I don't think they should die. But I do agree with what you said; that too many greedy people are in power. If we were in power we could really change things. That is something nice to think about.
I heard the gun on Almaz was because the US had plans for a military version of the Apollo LEM.
Also there where plans to use the shuttle for military purposes.
The Soviets knew of these plans and added a 23mm gun.
The entire station had to be aimed at the target so it's defense value was limited.
The old Apollo LEM probably could stay out of the line of fire while the shuttle could in theory carry a chemical laser like ABL or launch a series of robotic vehicles.
Almaz was the first space station, thanks to Almaz and Mir we have refined space technologies in the current ISS. Yes it is easy to talk shit about something one doesnt understand. And yes it was in sapce in the 1970's. The program was very expensive. One of these had a 30mm cannon on board, fired only once.
As you can see there was two types of space stations: Salut and Almaz. Sucessors of Salut are Mir Core Module, Zvezda (core module of ISS), Multipurpose Laboratory Module (rebuilt back-up of Zvezda module) which is to take a flight at 2011-2013.
Sucessors of Almaz are all Mir modules apart from core module and Zarya module (the very first module of ISS).
Almaz successors can be easily recognized by their conical butts.
You're a real American. You have no idea about history and think about the outside world like the people in North Korea do. Russians have always been the much more capable space flight nation. In the end it was the dollar - the US. economic strengh - that made you win the race.
hasseNicknames, sorry but USA is already in so much national debt it is reaching 14 trillion dollars by 2014, in 2009/ to 2014 NASA will need to buy ticket into space from the russia, the dollar is already failing, i can say that americans should be very greatful that china and rest of the world that keeps buying the US debt and flow it with money, think about the 700 billion dollar bailout package that money is from china via china buying us debt bounds, so i can say russian r leader
I read somewhere that one of these stations I think salyut 3 actually had a weapon, thus making it the only battle station in history to my knowledge, it had a self defence gun.
This was a good episode, the narrator said they could take a picture of earth with 3" resolution. They can transmit the image in high resolution back to Earth in a couple of hours. They had to turn all the lights out in the space station when developing the film. They aslo had a cannon mouted on the belly of the space craft. To blast a US destroyer satelites. The gun was fired once, not in battle, just before it re-entered Earths atmosphere.
if they kept this from us then what else arnt they telling us about whats in space. i use to love the idea of space till i found out ill never know everything that the government knows. theres too many secrets.
I hope the Almaz station in this video isn't the Almaz station they are talking about. It's nowhere near "fully intact" and hardly super-secret or exclusive. Pretty much anyone with a visa and $300 can tour this station.
While I hope to learn information on Almaz that hasn't already been published, based on what I've seen and read about this program... I'm not holding my breath.

@Membrane556 um, if you can point a telescope im sure you can point a gun, useless, in space it would work better than on earth.

Not first. Salut-1 1971 was the first sation. It was visited twice: by Souz-10 (failed to dock)& Sz-11 (crew died in reentry).
Salut-2 (Almaz) 1973 broke down on 13th day of flight.
Salut-3A failed to reach the orbit.
Salut-3 (Almaz-2) 1974. Exp: Sz-14 (success) Sz-15 (failed to dock)
Salut-4 1974 Sz-17,18 (s-s)
Salut-5 (Almaz-3) 1976 Sz-21(s-s), 23(f. to dock), 24(s-s).
Salut-6 (2nd SpSt gen.) 1977 15 s-sful expeditions, first time to dock with several Progresses.
Salut-7 1982 17Sz, 12Prg

Too sad I am from Singapore and the damn cable does not have a single NOVA program.

What was the name of the short film in Astro Spies? It was something National Security. Space National Security?
Great episode by the way. Suddenly "Moonraker" seems much more plausible!
