The legendary, James Phelps, Sr. died Tuesday, 10/26/10 in Inglewood, California. James was the former leader of the Soul Stirrers after Sam Cook and the founder of the Clefs of Calvary. A man with a golden voice . . . he will be sorely missed by his family, friends and fans. R.I.P. James.
@sharontherun I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. James Phelps. I knew that he had sung with the Soul Stirrers and only discovered a few months ago that I had him singing with them. I hadn't heard of The Clefs Of Calvary until that same interview I read. I found this post and became an instant fan. He will truly be missed.
I read an interview that Phelps gave and he said that he sung with the Soul Stirrers on the SAR recording of Lead Me To Calvary. Jimmy Outler sung lead, Sam Cooke is singing the 1st tenor, and Phelps is the 2nd tenor. He also said that he led the song on the B side, Mother Don't Worry About Me. I happen to have that 45. I always thought it was Outler on the lead but Phelps said that he is leading and now I can hear the difference. He even put in a nice Sam Cooke yodel. I'll try to post it soon.
Our Book; "A MUSICAL LEGEND SCARRED BY THE MEMORIES OF A PAINFUL PAST" The James Phelps Story is completed and will be released very soon! James would like to thank all of his fans for their continued support. Thank You! God Bless! This is a "must read book"
it don't get much better than that! the music is really polished for that era. thanx for posting, he and my dad had a chance to work it together back in the day!
