This climax ranks up as one of Disney's best. The Lion King, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, & Sleeping Beauty, & Robin Hood are probably the cream of the crop, but this one isn't far behind if at all.
@Johnlindsey289 Yeah, Ratigan is my all time favorite Disney villain. Vincent Price was the perfect choice to voice him. McLeach is my second favorite.
My top 10 is Ratigan, Jafar, Mcleach, Frollo, Hook, Scar, Sykes, Horned King, Meleficent and Cruella. Alan Young was terrific as Flaversham and funny how he was on Ducktales the next year as did you thought of Scrooge when you heard his voice?
Awesome movie, i saw this movie 4 times when i was 5 when it originally came out! i thought it was neat, Ratigan was cool and Fidget did scared me when he popped out the first time, i even had a crush on that cute mouse stripper Miss Kitty Mouse yet i do still thinks she's cute for a mouse. I even saw the 92 re-issue at 10 and enjoyed it as well and got it for christmas that year.
And 3:34 is the most intense part of the song... Simply because, that's where Ratigan goes batshit crazy, and the part that used to freak me out when I was kid...
Every single time my family watches the Great Mouse Detective, I have to listen to 2:54 to 3:54 over and over. I am seriously in love with violas/violins at this part. It just sounds so cool! I wouldn't mind hearing that part in person! Henry Mancini did an incredible job at everything he did!
Every time I hear it I can just see Ratigan tearing off his suit and cape, destroying the charming facade he has created and showing the audience who he REALLY is - a monstrous rat.
@MsPerryRocks Don't egg them on! Of all the sequels I've seen to Disney cartoons, it's been Disney trying to make some extra cash and the movies are awful. For instance, the sequel to The hunchback of Notre Dame.
This is one of those disney movies with absolute adventure in it! I loved watching this movie when I was younger. The hole, sherlock holmes theme caught my attention and the action was so fun, daring, frightning and thrilling! I could watch this 1,000 times and my facial expression would be as if I was watching it for the first time: AMAZED and scared for the characters!! lol!
This movie is far too underrated. Of all Disney heroes, Basil is one of the few who I think could actually be a real person. He's a genius, but also sort of a dick, he's brilliant and capable, but also insensitive to the feelings of others until he practically gets slapped in the face with how much he's hurting them, he's incredible at deducing things, but he's also rather goofy and hyperactive sometimes. Overall, a much more REAL person, with flaws and all.
@Nyghtshade409 Yeah and Ratigan has the same sort of depth. As Vincent Price said, he's "playing the great villain" - using the facade of "evil" and "villainy" to cover up his pissed off, insecure personality. And if not for the climactic 5 minutes of the movie we wouldn't even know this.
This is the only disney movie I can think of which has such an epic score! (maybe Lion King too) just listen at 1:40. Brilliant! I'm also a big sherlock holmes fan! I love this movie so much
"Ohhhhh, you want to lighten the load? *Fidget snickers at Olivia, but stops as Ratigan grabs him by his ears* EXCELLENT IDEA! *Ratigan tosses him out of the dirigible*"
I saw this movie in theaters when i was 5 years old in theaters when i lived in St. Louis, my mom took me for the first time then my dad took me on second time, him and i agree that the mouse stripper was pretty. I had a Basil toy and a readalong book as well, i also saw Transformers The Movie, Howard The Duck, Top Gun and Aliens that summer as well as American Tail, Star Trek 4 and Little Shop of Horrors that year.
My favorite part of the score. In fact, I'd put the climax of this movie with some of the best Disney endings ever!!! Not just the score, but it's nonstop action throughout.
Hey, this is my FAVORITE Disney movie they have ever made. I love the plot, and, for some unknown reason, I get this wierd excitement when Basil is aware that he is in the Big Ben. The computer animation at the time was impressive, with the clockwork.
@TheWarnerSister Yeah, I also don't like how Olivia is wearing a PINK outfit on the VHS Cover when she wears blue. And even worse, the DVD cover looks like Olivia is a "fat and happy boy"
can somebody please answer this question, did fidget die when he got thrown out of the sky? some say yes some say no....but did he die? PLEASE TELL ME!
ITS A SHAME....if he did surivie. they should make a 2nd film where Fidget takes over ratingans work and seeks revenge...i bet all the basil fans agree with me on that
@SweetPoffin he did make a few appearances in either a comic series or TV series later on. this time working with the good guys. however he also been dead in other media. very confusing
@SweetPoffin In the original book series, he survived, so I'm assuming he survived in the movie. It's never explained in the film or the books though.
@anticenaguy Since Disney makes films mainly for kids, they never let out the secret whether Fidget DID die or not, but since he clearly does not know how to swim (or fly), I think he did drown (Ratigan never did like him). I love this movie.
@anticenaguy He probably did since he had a crippled wing and he landed in water which, contrary to popular belief, will still kill you when you land on it from that height.
@SuperDisneyFan15 "Ratigan throws Fidget (who can't fly) into the Thames River below to "lighten the load"..." The article says nothing about whetther he lives or dies. Wikipedia has the closest thing I found.
@anticenaguy I like to think he died because he was so tired after bicycling the air zeppelin just before being throwned out.. he couldn´t fly and than "splash!!!" hitting the thames river like falling onto a paved street! haha, this is such a good disney movie!
@anticenaguy "Ratigan throws Fidget (who can't fly) into the Thames River presumably to his death, and then attempts to drive the dirigible himself." (From The Great Mouse Detective Wikipedia article.) This is the best answer I've got.
This is one of the Most Underrated Disney Classics!!! and in the truth this Movie saved the Disney animation studios..
Basil in my opinion is the smartest and most charismatic Disney hero of all the heros and he is the only Disney hero that does not resort to Violence.. Basil is truly One of a Kind
And This will always be my #1 Favorite Disney Movie espically with the Music and The Chase Scene were Basil uses the Union Jack Flag to Chase Ratigan's Blimp... Genius in everyway!!
Disney's greatest hero and villain, and in the same movie no less... it's a shame this movie isn't ranked higher when it comes to Disney movie popularity polls.
@DareDevilWithoutFear Everything you said is what I think, too. In mouse terms, I think Basil is very cute. The Big Ben Scene is ultimately the best scene among all Disney movies.
@DareDevilWithoutFear I second this comment. This is in my top 3 favorite Disney movies and was my favorite childhood movie. Basil was my favorite character and, now that I think about it, I have an unfinished sequel I need to write.
@DareDevilWithoutFear It's so rare that someone remembers this movie! This is my favorite Disney cartoon, but whenever I bring it up none of my friends know what I'm talking about.
@dmc97ingc - Yes, it's amazing from 2:54 till the end! I watched it today, and I had an adrenaline rush at the climactic end! It's hard for me to believe that a cartoon movie can do that, but, this is an exceptional Disney movie. :)
@DiamondHobbit I know!! I love the clockwork scene with the continous tick-tock of the Big Ben, for some reason. It makes me feel excited. At that part Ratigan truly showed his maniac side...
@dmc97ingc I know. I get all tingling when the piano starts. Ratigan appears clasping Oliva, looking so evil that you want to know what would happen if he won.
This score is extremely climatic. Why did they change the score on the 2002 DVD!?
Even though I could hear that score on the French and Spanish audio track, it really sucks that I can't on the English track. And his version of the score is also heard on the 1992 VHS.
@AnimationManiac And here I am thinking I was the only one who noticed. For some reason, when they restored the film for it's 2002 DVD, they made a huge mistake, in that the musical score fro the left channel couldn't be heard (where the chords often play), yet the right channel was just fine. i have no idea who was responsible for that, and by God was it annoying, but thank goodness they got it right for the recent 2010 DVD release (which looks and sounds incredible, by the way).
@TonyWDA I remember that error too! It was pretty annoying and the music was nearly inaudible in a few parts. I can't wait to get the 2010 DVD release, not just because they fixed the error, but because of the use of an even better movie transfer (complete with original 1986 titles and credits)
I enjoy remixing this with the Sleeping Beautey escape ost, it's epic!
