It's mostly part of the show because almost everyone can relate to a holiday during Winter. It creates an episode, and seems like by now with any show, you HAVE to have at least one holiday episode.
It's not necessarily to take from the book or to ruin the book, it's just an episode special.

I like this for the fact it gives YOUNGER children a more appropriate view of this story and series, whereas the movie is more for adults and teenagers. Someday, someone should remake the original Watership Down into a CG/ Live action movie.
