BEWARE: This is the butchered European edit of the film, which cut out nearly an hour of footage. From IMDB; The European version of the film was re-edited and shortened by CIC, the European distributor, without director William Friedkin's permission. The prologue sequences set in New York, Paris, Vera Cruz and Israel that show what happened to the main characters and why they had to flee to South America, were changed to flashbacks running throughout the film.
Immense? Bill Friedkin said Scheider was not his first, second or third choice and lacked the qualities of a leading man, which contributed to the box office failure of the film. I agree.
They guys are about as down and out as it gets. They will do anything to get out of their current situations. The narrative is perfectly clear and the visuals are as uncomfortably stunning as possible. How could those shitty 1977 critics not love this film? Fuck 'em. Friedkin is one of my favorite directors and this is one of the best movies.

I love that shot of the poster, with Coca Cola representing refreshing America,so close but just out of reach.
