  • What if it is very late? can I say xiao ye can(tzan)?

  • 妳真是可愛,教中文,讚!讚!讚!讚!讚!

  • you look like me girlfriend...hehhehe..thank you for your chinese lesson

  • hi Yumi

please can i request you to get more focus on general conversation between two people like with subtitles chinese with pinyi , so that i can get more .

    Thanks

  • great vido! question to you: what's the difference between "zao shang hao and "zao an"?

  • We use both "Ni hao ma" and "Ni zenme yang" in different occasions. There are only a few people say ni hao ma is because it's not appropriate to use in the common conversations with the people that you met already.

Usually we say "Ni zui jin zenme yang" instead of ni zenme yang, 'cause ni zenme yang sounds a little rude.

    "zui jin" means "recently".

  • A little note: for "How are you?" I usually say "Ni(men) zenme yang?"

I almost never use Ni hao ma, and have never heard that being used, although I see it in lessons all the time. Is this just a Taiwanese thing, or am I just missing out on stuff xD

  • 花容月貌!

    谢谢你 and 晚安

  • 我可以说 [ 早好] ?

    在见

    你真得漂亮!

  • 再见

    你真的好漂亮 或者 你长得漂亮

  • thaks yumilove for your videos, i'm preparing my chinese for going to taipei sooon, i'm from ohile, but my dad is from taiwan ... actually i'm 50% from taiwan.

    I love taiwan !!!!

  • I have a question Sophie, if you don`t mind answering? I have a kind of phrase book with me during your lessons (to help with matching words with sound).

Your pronunciation for Greetings and meals of the day sound different to how they look in my book. Is this your Taiwanese dialect or are the words influenced by the strokes above certain letters?

e.g. Breakfast - Zaofan(with marks above both a`s). etc. the "fan" part sounds different.

    Forgive my ignorance.

    Thanks.

  • You can say both ways but most people from Taiwan, i would say, say tzan more often than fan. But both are acceptable. :)

  • Thanks :-)

  • r u married or anything. wud u like to visit me in the UK

  • u dressed up really strange

you wear a turtleneck top and that bra together..a bit weird

by the way, I am Chinese too, nice to meet you

  • haha i dunno but just the way i dress.

it's a type of style i guess, layer it up!

i'm actually taiwanese, not chinese. ^^

    nice to meet you!

  • Well, I believe Taiwanese people are Chinese too.

  • Well obviously not so much because we have absolutely different taste in not only the fashion, but also the language and the culture. ^^

If Taiwanese was Chinese, then there wouldn't be "Taiwan"ese, would it?

  • Taiwan is the Republic of China

Majority of Taiwanese people emigrated from mainland China.

People from Shanghai and Beijing share different taste and culture and language, they are called Beijingers and Shanghainese, does it means they are not Chinese?

Anyway, these are only my views, maybe we should focus our discussion back on your video.

  • Thanks for sharing your views.

However, Taiwan has NOTHING alike with China, they interact with each other for the sake of global economy, just like everywhere else in the world.

Goverment structure and political view and religious believes are completely different, more so than the people within China.

  • I agree that Taiwanese people originated from China, just like the majority of Americans migrated from parts of Europe; they're called Americans with Irish, British, etc. heritage.

Taiwanese people would be ok for being called Chinese also if the Chinese govt wasn't so forceful and oppressive.

  • Maybe you should teach people to say 台湾国 when teaching people how to say Taiwan : ).

    -瑞典人在北京

  • Well I guessed you were American by what you just said, People living in Taiwan call themselves Chinese. Taiwans population is made up of the nationalist that ran away from China after their loss of the civil war. The Chinese goverment now is doing great things, very diffrent fom when your parents knew them.

  • Maybe you just don't know how it is with Taiwanese culture then.

All my friends, who are Taiwanese, states that they are "Taiwanese", not "Chinese."

They also get offended when people call them Chinese instead of Taiwanese.

Maybe you should look into the Taiwanese culture a little more before speaking for them.

And I was born in Taiwan and still very involved with the culture, thank you VERY much.

  • taiwan are chinese people. that is fact. thats why the two speak the same language

  • you must be chinese ... because taiwanese are NOT chinese!!!! language doesnt define race ..

that is obvious.... plus taiwanese speak taiwanese .... you know ..tai wan hua ~~~~

  • taiwanaese its own language? yeah, its mandarin

  • @createsounds She is Taiwanese for sure. Taiwanese speak common Mandarin just like Singaporean and Chinese. We still have Taiwanese, Hakka dialect and aboriginal language.

  • @createsounds if you are referring to race in the strictest biological sense than you are right, language doesn't define race; however, language is a component of culture which itself is a component of ethnicity;

the only diff between taiwan and china is the government; that doesn't make the two folks different, no matter how much they want it to be; so, taiwanese are chinese; they're a type of chinese

  • @jayangli Taiwanese definitely are not Chinese. That's fact. That's why we have different government, currency, president and life. And Sophie is a pretty and nice "Taiwanese girl".

  • @yumiilove I found out that Taiwanese don't like to be called Chinese on my last trip to Taiwan.

  • @dbielby Taiwanese were born in Taiwan under a Taiwanese Government....so naturally they are Taiwanese by nationality even though the race is Chinese. By the same token many Hong Kong Chinese would like to tell you that they are Hong Kong Chinese, not just "Chinese"....

  • @yumiilove taiwanese people are offended when they're called Chinese? that seems very exaggerated to me;

    the only difference between mainland China and Taiwan is the government, culturally, Taiwanese are Chinese people! that's how I see it;

If I am wrong, what are the arguments?

  • incredible language chinese.... look at it! one syllable per concept...

and the similarity between concepts is illustrated in the similarity between the sounds... 'an' for part of day, 'tzan' for meal.... the 'prefixes' are kept.... zao, woo, wan... outstanding.... it's as if this language was design by efficiency experts! although I must say, as a european I find the 1) use of tones for meanings quite foreign... 2) as well the words are v diff, not related to any language I know; 1+2=difficult

  • You'd be surprised. Actually most Taiwanese people now would call themselves Taiwanese and rarely Chinese. Back in the day a survey was done and it was in favour of being called "chinese", nowadays I think it's like what 90% prefer to be called "Taiwanese"?

  • i lyk ur outfits! its cute...^^

    wer u from?

  • i was born in taiwan but pretty much an americanized taiwanese. ^^ lived in the states since i was 12.

  • i've been wasting time watching hot girls on here...thanks for the lessons...i'm learning Chinese starting 08. keep them coming. thank you.

  • do you know canton because i want to learn that too.

  • Unfortunately, I don't really.

I can make out words when people are talking but it's not my language. Thank you tho.

  • Really helpful videos, I can't wait for the next one.

  • Thanks for watching!

  • Also... I know you did in seasons video, but can you also pronounce the words in normal speed too in the next lesson. Thank you again for the lessons, by the way. : )

  • Hi there, thanks for watching my videos.

Just to clarify your question, did you mean you want me to pronounce a little faster or slower?

    Let me know, thanks!

  • The speed you pronounce in the video is good! But maybe in addition you can pronounce it faster too so we can get a feel for how we would hear in a real situation. Take care.

  • Awesome, thanks for letting me know.

  • Do you mean you would say "bye" in English? Thanks for the lesson. I will have to go back and review the others some more too. ^^

  • How come when you say Good afternoon and Lunch it sounds more like "ooˇ an" and "ooˇ tzan", while Good night and Dinner sounds just like you have typed?

  • Oh I dunno... maybe my pronounciation is bad.. haha

  • oh i see what you're saying!

well it's kinda like a "oo" and "woo", but when you speak it, the accent sounds like oo so you don't sound like a foreigner.

    that might be why. =)

  • Ok. I often find Asian languages translated to the roman language system more or less misleading :)

  • Ya... I don't even know it myself! haha
