This is the great mystery track of Purple Rain.I've talked to so many people that wanted to hear this whole track after seeing that brief scene in Purple Rain with the synchronized crowd.
@weathered79 Dez is one of the original members of the revolution. matter of fact, I was on his website. he has a very revealing book about his time with prince.
@weathered79... Dez left the group after the Triple Threat Tour in 1983 and replaced by Wendy Melvoin. Although he was featured in Purple Rain... he was no longer a member of Prince's band (Revolution). Perhaps that is the reason why he was not on the album.
@heatherhoolala ahahahaha I USEDD TO SAYY THAT!!! ahahhaha for a longg time and my dad wuld bag on me but then i was watching the credits and i was like ohh.... then yeahh now im here hahah i lovee this songg XD
He should have sung , "I want to be a millionaire, millionaire, millionaire" Then he would have got loads of royalties when TV shows do money programmes, using this in the background. Doh! Instead, Pink Floyd get all the royalties for "Money"
you know i would wont be mad at dez for leaving the Revolution cause if my boss made a song with my telephone number 777 9311 into a song i would have broke camp as well lol
there were ALOT of song in Purple Rain that were not on the soundtrack. The Time released their own album, as did Appollonia 6. I never recall a Dez Dickerson release ever!
I am totally stoked to find this. Dez performed about two seconds of this song in the movie "Purple Rain". My friends and I wondered what happened to Dez after he left Prince after the "1999" tour and his "Purple Rain" cameo. Dez became a Born Again Christian. So did Prince's bodyguard Chick Huntsberry. Huntsberry also played the First Avenue bouncer in "Purple Rain". Prince is a brilliant musician, but he has screwed more people than the government. FUGGETABOUTIT!
i'm not surprised...this is another classic example of how the prince's extreme natural talent for music excuses him for being a super asshole in real life...you gotta wonder if it's not because of his talent that he was/is that way...in his defense it can be clearly said that he is a genuine music genius...no joke...at least he doesn't molest little kids like that other genius we all know....
I think its funny how people judge when they really have no clue in MJ's defense he was a great person prince is great to but you don't really seriously know either of them so what gives you the right to judge them like that just cause the stupid media says crap doesn't mean it's true
you'll note I never said MJ...I was thinking of R. Kelly...he had like 21 counts against him at one point...it's interesting how everyone assumes that its about MJ....
god has answered my prayers: this is the best song in the movie...i am a hardcore Prince fanatic but this song is one in a million...true fact: DEZ did the intro to When Doves Cry, NOT Prince: Dez was a retarded guitarist...real talk...I love this song so much that I titled an album i did after it....google the word modernaire...my name is JAGEN....the lyrics of that song is how i live my life....pessimistic attitudes never will i wear!
@weathered79 Good memory - yes, he was orginal guartist prior to Wendy. Dez left shortly after the Controversy tour. The dude was awesome on the guitar. I eventually warmed up to Wendy.
This song totally opitimizes the 80s and probably wasn't put on the soundtrack as to not upstage the star. But it's cool. The true fans give it the recognition it deserves. Great beat and great lyrics. Long live the Modernaires!!
Whooooaahh @ anonymousent !!! THANK-U 4 postin' this !!! ALL these years of being a Prince/Minneapolis Funk Fanatic and this is the FIRST time I've heard that song in its entirety. Wow. I feel complete now lol. My God what memories this song and soundtrack and bring back.
And I bet PRINCE misses 'em too ...... they were the supporting backbone that believed in his vision .... the band he rolls with now are just PAID backers .... No friendships / no true laughter / just employees ...... Guess that's what he gets ....
prince is the greatest musician breathing but a well known asshole...he shitted on jesse johnson, Jam & Lewis and alexander o'neal too...i think he was just fighting to protect his legacy...like u said he's reaping what he sowed... friendship wise...thanx for tamara & the scene...man i been searching for 15 yrs for that track god bless u man...
@anonymousent i so agree and i never really looked at it like that but yes Revolution was like a family and now he does only have paid ppl in his band. in fact, every time i see him live, it's always somebody new playing with him. bet he misses that. good point you made there buddy.
@anonymousent Yeah, that's the kind of band these stars like, I guess (Eagles, etc.)...paid session guys, so they don't have to share much spotlight and money. Shame. Thanks for posting...first time I've heard this all the way through.
me too. i've been wondering what the name of this song was ever since i seen "purple rain" back in the 80's!!!
when i heard that little part of this song in the movie, i thought,
"that's a bad song!"
i couldn't wait to get the soundtrack to hear the song but sad say, it wasn't on there. i think me & my cousin even rented the "purple rain" movie & kept rewinding the part where this song plays just to see if we could recognize it.
@anonymousent I was under the impression that Dez left of his own free will and accord and that there was no anamosity between him and Prince... I do know that he was truely missed by the fans
Me tooooo. Too bad Prince's such a PRICK, otherwise The Revolution would be doing reunion shows/concerts just like all the other 80's bands are doing nowadays! And believe me i hate to call Prince a prick simply because i luuuv him and have been listening to him eversince i was 4 in 1985, YES 4 YRS OLD, i use to steal my Mom's Purple Rain LP, take it to my room, and just stare at Prince..REAL TALK! But from what all i hear about Prince treating Mazarati like trash and now this..i have no choice
@missNYCmodel - I love, or should I say I loved Prince's music (pre-2000), especially the albums Controversy & Dirty Mind. He seems to be reaping what he sows in being such an an AZ to many fine musicians he has run roughshod over. I am not holding my breath for a reunion of the Revolution - despite how awesome it would be.
@missNYCmodel -really it wasn't his fault the rev split,he wanted all the people who had anything to do with the rev to be part of it. such as sheila e's band. but members started getting mad because the geust were in front and originals weren't.
What trips me out most about Dez is how he's totally happy with his life -- as is. No regrets. No whining over what could have been. He's one of those rare artists who really has his head together..
this song/artist is EXTREMELY underrated. i've seen that many people have searched far and wide for this song going all the way back to when Purple Rain was still in theaters.
i'm not sure what Dez is doing for his bread and butter, but this song REALLY deserved to have a chance as a commercial hit... and i would like to hope that he received his due compensation for such an AMAZING song.
this is my favourite song of all time, im 20.. would love to share this song with my music friends.. but it wasnt released commercially.. ive met others on last fm who love this song..
i know dez wrote a book a few years ago called "my time with prince" but i havent seen it around latly...i wonder why ready for the world (oh shelia) was huge in autum 85 ( i know cos i remember it then) and then Dez never was really heard from? I love prince but it seems like if dez has the most famous guiitar solo in history (little red corvette) surely he deserved a good career..its not like he didnt have the goods..i still love all those guys.
Dez broke Prince camp due to religious reasons .... Prince wasn't too happy with it & neither were the guys at Warner Bros. ( which were sure Dez would sign w/ them as the rest of Prince's camp ) but Dez didn't .... So they minimized his appearance in the movie & ( the rumor has it ) made his solo efforts harder to take off ...
makes total sense..i know he hold religion very hihgly to him..and i respect that..check this out...tried to find the book (my time with prince) they are like 150$ plus!!! i should have bought it when it came out..and im 99% sure you can no longer get them from his site..shame..
hmm..... i think i can locate it dirt cheap for ya ..... i'll hit u up when i find the link to get tha book ..... 150 ??? .... hell for that price you can get the book w/ some Dez autographed shit ..... lol ........
It was just an " extra " in the movie since Dez never INKED a deal w/ Paisley Park & didn't work for Warner Bros when he left Prince's camp .... so they scrapped it from the LP option & buried it's chances of competing against the PURPLE PRICK during movie record sales .......
The movie had several great songs by Prince & the Revolution, Morris & the Time, and I like the sexiness of the ladies on, Sexshooter. But for me, this song the tone for me. I think it's gothic, and I loved the way the crowd moved to it.
Actually .... there isn't an official video .... but i do have " in the vault somewhere " - i think 2 live performances of this track & others ..... i've been lookin' for it for ages - but if i ever find it / i will load it ......
Every tune that's on iTunes have a FEE to pay from the Recording Companies / Record Labels ..... then from the fees acquired when u get a song from iTunes the money is split between iTunes fee / record label / song writers / music writers / performers ....... if they ALL don't come to a mutual agreement then the song won't be there ..... And why this ain't available - see the MANY reasons above ...
Thanks for the clarification. Is Dez still making music? I bought his Oneman CD awhile back, but nothing came out since then. And doesn't he have a son making music? Why are talented people so damn coy? Share your genius with the rest of us! We need something to break the monotony of life...
Dez is actually still doin' music / more contemporary gospel .... he still runs an independent gospel label & is branching into other things & for his kid - i ain't really heard much on the music he does ( if any at the moment ) ...... the issue with Dez was when he was in the Prince camp his religious issues conflicted & he decided to bounce ( & even Prince tried to get him not to go but he said he was out ) ..... wild huh ???
You Are Welcome ........ I'm SHOCKED to see how many only heard the "snippet" on Purple Rain & never got to enjoy the entire DEZ era ......... damn shame ......
I was lucky enough 2 meet the great Dez at a church that i used 2 attend here in nasville in the early 90's...what a great guy. he also had a studio here.
Peace of history. When Dez took out this tour, right after purple rain came out, a local band affectionaly refered to as Spank the monkey was his back up band. The 2nd guitar player was Joe Hunt. Joe died a few years ago. Joe was the man, great showman, See him in Purple rain.
@witchman1 lol is joe that guy in red doing the crazy dancing in purple rain during dez's performance ? lol i love that part. i laugh at it every time i see it
seriously? This is the jam! And Dez kicked ass on the 'Little Red Corvette' and '1999' tracks. Prince didnt do all the work! Those songs wouldn't have been as hot without him!
CORRECTION ..... PRINCE DID NOT MAKE THIS TRACK .... This is DEZ creation ...... " Prince " only loaned bkgrd vocals to this track ...... Since Dez never inked a deal with Warner Bros. they CUT most of the scene of him onstage doin' this track OUT of Purple Rain and made Prince vocals in the back very low but the mix down crew made it obvious ( around 0:55 ... 1:47 ... 3:02 .... 3:20 ) that he was on it. BUT if this was a Prince track - it wouldn't be POSTED !!!
OK thanks for corrections. this is still my fav song ever!, I now have 'do you remember' by dez dickerson from retrospective album, private message me if anyone wants it..
I think Prince produced this and Dez wrote it. It has too many Prince elements - Linn drum pattern with loud snare, backwards girl voice in one channel, Oberheim string program, white noise, flanger on guitar, spoken lyrics. then you hear Prince singing background
NOPE ....... Dez was tinkering w/ leaving tha Prince camp & was makin' his own songs ( including this one ) .... Prince did background vocals hoping to sway him to stay & sign w/ tha rest of the camp on Warner Bros. ..... Dez declined & thatz why it was SO HARD for Dez solo .... Prince had an IRON CLAD FIST on the big label then .... if they didnt come out on the Purple Print then he would take them down .......
Can I buy this track somewhere, or was it ever released on CD? On wikipedia is something about a dez's single "modernaire" released 2008 (what's that about?)
This is a great song, many thanks for posting this :D
Wikipedia info was input by the guys that released this on vinyl limited edition .... Yes - Freakin' vinyl !!! ... Anyone can input Wikipedia info ..... i've had this since early 90s .... they can input what they want ... i know the real biz .... and released on CD ??? That one I don't know ......
does anyone notice that chop sound every 4-5 seconds, the first one is at 0:05. Prince uses that sound on when doves cry too.. I so love how he used similar sounds in his songs, its what made purple rain so original, artists and producers today never do that, its always a mix of genres and different sounds.
Dez released this when he released his book. I think it was on a DC he sold with it, forget. A trip. I think the story was that an album was fully ready but Warner Bros. cancelled it.
Dez's brief appearance can be seen in the movie, Purple Rain. Its a brief moment he and band perform it. Always fascinated fans.
Its been my personal motto for many years - to be a Modernaire. Seriously.
I was a modernaire when this song came out. It was good. Dez Dickserson is the most underrated artist from the 80s

Got it ...... workin' on it ......
anonymousent 2 years ago
why this song never played on the radio? it's a great song and great movie.
1087shotwell 2 years ago
It was just an " extra " in the movie since Dez never INKED a deal w/ Paisley Park & didn't work for Warner Bros when he left Prince's camp .... so they scrapped it from the LP option & buried it's chances of competing against the PURPLE PRICK during movie record sales .......
anonymousent 2 years ago
The movie had several great songs by Prince & the Revolution, Morris & the Time, and I like the sexiness of the ladies on, Sexshooter. But for me, this song the tone for me. I think it's gothic, and I loved the way the crowd moved to it.

Why can't you buy this on iTunes?
Laffington 2 years ago
Every tune that's on iTunes have a FEE to pay from the Recording Companies / Record Labels ..... then from the fees acquired when u get a song from iTunes the money is split between iTunes fee / record label / song writers / music writers / performers ....... if they ALL don't come to a mutual agreement then the song won't be there ..... And why this ain't available - see the MANY reasons above ...
anonymousent 2 years ago
Thanks for the clarification. Is Dez still making music? I bought his Oneman CD awhile back, but nothing came out since then. And doesn't he have a son making music? Why are talented people so damn coy? Share your genius with the rest of us! We need something to break the monotony of life...
Laffington 2 years ago
Dez is actually still doin' music / more contemporary gospel .... he still runs an independent gospel label & is branching into other things & for his kid - i ain't really heard much on the music he does ( if any at the moment ) ...... the issue with Dez was when he was in the Prince camp his religious issues conflicted & he decided to bounce ( & even Prince tried to get him not to go but he said he was out ) ..... wild huh ???

I was lucky enough 2 meet the great Dez at a church that i used 2 attend here in nasville in the early 90's...what a great guy. he also had a studio here.
basskiller42 2 years ago
.... He still does ..... he does religious music now & runs an independent label out of Nashville .......

This song is DOPE!!! This is going to be the next remix from StreetCred NYC...

Peace of history. When Dez took out this tour, right after purple rain came out, a local band affectionaly refered to as Spank the monkey was his back up band. The 2nd guitar player was Joe Hunt. Joe died a few years ago. Joe was the man, great showman, See him in Purple rain.
witchman1 2 years ago
@witchman1 lol is joe that guy in red doing the crazy dancing in purple rain during dez's performance ? lol i love that part. i laugh at it every time i see it

Perfect song for the mood of the movie. I liked that movement in unison by the dancers during this song.

seriously? This is the jam! And Dez kicked ass on the 'Little Red Corvette' and '1999' tracks. Prince didnt do all the work! Those songs wouldn't have been as hot without him!

prince made this song it is my favourite song ever
randel14 3 years ago
CORRECTION ..... PRINCE DID NOT MAKE THIS TRACK .... This is DEZ creation ...... " Prince " only loaned bkgrd vocals to this track ...... Since Dez never inked a deal with Warner Bros. they CUT most of the scene of him onstage doin' this track OUT of Purple Rain and made Prince vocals in the back very low but the mix down crew made it obvious ( around 0:55 ... 1:47 ... 3:02 .... 3:20 ) that he was on it. BUT if this was a Prince track - it wouldn't be POSTED !!!
anonymousent 3 years ago
True. If it was a Prince track the video or audio wuld have been deleted by his publishing company.
mulry101 3 years ago 3
OK thanks for corrections. this is still my fav song ever!, I now have 'do you remember' by dez dickerson from retrospective album, private message me if anyone wants it..
randel14 2 years ago
I think Prince produced this and Dez wrote it. It has too many Prince elements - Linn drum pattern with loud snare, backwards girl voice in one channel, Oberheim string program, white noise, flanger on guitar, spoken lyrics. then you hear Prince singing background
PhuckHue2 2 years ago 5
I 2nd that. The linn is in the beat with the famous clap at the end of the bar. All its missing is a long warpped ob-8 pad. lol
rome848 2 years ago 3
i love the infamous "clap" at the end like u stated. he's the best.
mxdallasboy1 2 years ago
NOPE ....... Dez was tinkering w/ leaving tha Prince camp & was makin' his own songs ( including this one ) .... Prince did background vocals hoping to sway him to stay & sign w/ tha rest of the camp on Warner Bros. ..... Dez declined & thatz why it was SO HARD for Dez solo .... Prince had an IRON CLAD FIST on the big label then .... if they didnt come out on the Purple Print then he would take them down .......

does anyone notice that chop sound every 4-5 seconds, the first one is at 0:05. Prince uses that sound on when doves cry too.. I so love how he used similar sounds in his songs, its what made purple rain so original, artists and producers today never do that, its always a mix of genres and different sounds.
this is the Minneapolis sound right here!
randel14 3 years ago 2
Dez released this when he released his book. I think it was on a DC he sold with it, forget. A trip. I think the story was that an album was fully ready but Warner Bros. cancelled it.
Dez's brief appearance can be seen in the movie, Purple Rain. Its a brief moment he and band perform it. Always fascinated fans.
Its been my personal motto for many years - to be a Modernaire. Seriously.
