  • If it don't groove, it don't prove! (this surely does). Tight & polished!

  • This is what you call tight

  • Just AMAZING!! Why haven't I heard of these guys before!!!!

  • What a delight to see this great track played live.Brit funk at its best!

  • i was born 14 years too late D:

  • Level 42 in the zone ! Every one is on the same funky groove, love this AWESOME video.

  • 00:58 That little triplet like thing gets me every time!

  • @chewy5150 same mate they are so cool and hard to play i've only just nailed how to do them

  • Love the opening, and Mark's little dance!

  • He is god.

  • Marc King qui tchatche façon rap,cet homme est un champion,il a une voix de chanteur black etc.. Big Uppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

  • Actually i was working as a runner for level 42 on their scadinavian leg this tour.. :-)

  • i´am scared like hell that people gonna be on such a high lvl :D

  • One of the best bands ever. I wish i had lived in the 80s

  • Great that he makes an effort to sing all the lyrics in German

  • @f4freddie :|

  • He slaps that bass like a pimp slaps a hoe.

  • Mark King looks very much like Paul Hogan aka "Crocodile Dundee" in this video, mainly because of the blonde haircut and beefed-up arms.

  • This slaps you in the face in every direction it's so sick.

  • Did i mentioned i was there, paid my ticket and was part of the whole thing?

To this day, one of the best live experiences i have ever seen.

    Big time.

  • @boomfield Lucky bastard! ;-)

  • @sastal

It was no luck, i really focused this gig, i wanted to be there :-)

    And made it.

    Peace from Germany

  • boon gould looks like peter crouch! i love level 42 and i love spurs YES!

  • These are the ingredient to what ALL bands should be made of. Find this perfection in today's music. Not even close! ;)

  • TOP THAT!!!!!!

  • ive just snorted it like keef

  • Sorry about my swearing everyone!

  • This is when these guys were the shit! Fucking top musicianship!!

  • Just the sort of thing I expect from the guy who runs the official website. Where do you get them all from? Totally awesome performance of this early classic.

  • Beautiful, just genius

  • A long Time ago,my Life

    Really Great

  • fantastic song with fantastic bass and drum solo's

if level 42 were never around, i wouldnt have started playing bass

  • I love his Alembics, Status, GB & Ashley Pangborn basses.......but for me, nothing beats the sound of the Jaydee. Strapped high on his chest making him look like Gerry Marsdens grandson, whilst beating seven shades out of it......pure funk heaven....any chance he'll use it on the 30th anniversay tour?

  • @gdv42 "Strapped high on his chest making him look like Gerry Marsdens grandson"

lol, i always thought that too!!

    Top post, Funk heaven indeed..

  • superb mark king makes that bass sing! level 42 5 stars yessireeeeeeeeee

  • When is the last time this beautiful track feat a L42 gig?

  • I think I'm an addict. I'm guessing I've watched this amazing vid 50-60 times in the past week...and I'm starting to have dreams at night that I'm living at the Rockpalast. Sad, but true.

  • das geilste band von die ganze welt!!!

  • what ever happened to music like this? the world is now flled with rap and chavy music. this is the real music, level 42. anyway, love marks... whatever he was doing at the beggining. thanks for posting.

  • awesome

  • one of the if not best band that ever hit this planet!

  • This is FUNK at it's best... what an injection!!

  • Great groove ;example of early level 42s Rawness, more towards a fusion type of thing, rather than a ,for lack of a better description a more "pop" type of composing style .I think it is all part of their evolution as a band and composers/song writers.Mark was always amazing ,his solos still contain elements from these days.

  • 5* Mark King: Danke schön - aye, take it easy my man! lol:)

  • @bintangtheater1 Mark King says "immer" (always) NOT aye....

  • @dablt: Yeah, I know, but he actually says: Danke schön - immer! Aye, take it easy my man! He was pointing at someone in the audience and I really would like to know what that was about...

  • Where Mark King got the energy to play these gigs at the pace he displays here is beyond me. This is a classic example of what makes the Jaydee such a high-caliber instrument in the hands of a skilled master.

  • wow what a groove. this rocks!

  • fantastic video of the authentic original band's pioneering work. Unfortunately it keeps freezing up about 20% of the way through - always in the same place.

  • What's that supposed to mean?

  • he is the jimi hendrix of the bass!

    nice!

  • Mark had been playing bass for what...about 5 years at this point. Badass.

  • @sorenrules: D'oh!!

  • The percussionist is Wally Badarou, I believe.

  • Leroy Williams

  • @morganroussel Indeed, often considered to be the early fifth member of L42.

  • @morganroussel

    I think King is the most percussive here [;

  • funk yeah!!!

  • The best drummer they have had was Gary Husband. Anyway, I love this band (Mark).

  • this is a video of the interior of the mothership the groove is your protection

  • funky year!!!

  • Comment removed

  • damn this video is so amazing it never gets old

  • Mr Phil Gould is like a drum machine!!!

    Wish I had his skill........

  • I`m a Copeland fan, but this drummer knows his onions. The whole band is so under-rated, only really remembered for their late 80`s radio-friendly songs, but man could they funk!! Hot Water is unbeatable!

  • Boon is so solid. Great rhythm and solo licks. Very clean. Who was the percussionist?

  • The percussionist is, erm, Phil Gould sibling of Boon!

  • There is a percussionist as well as Phil, he's standing behind Mike! It's Leroy Williams :-)

  • Best drummer he ever had. Awesome that snare.

  • Comment removed

  • On their game! Phil gould is magic. Loved early stuff.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again; this is one of the best performances I've ever seen.

  • agreed

  • Fuck yeah !!

  • it don't get much better then this!!

    learn kids..

  • @mrjonrickly I can only agree!!!

I great drum player and a grat bass guitar player!

    put them together, perfection!

  • @mrjonrickly Um HELLO! We don't all listen to the same rubbish! I happen to be a passionate and devoted Level 42 fan and aged 16 aswell. Comments like that make me feel really frustrated that I've been labelled because of my age.

  • they should chain up lindup to his keyboard lol he cant dance any one know where i can download this version

  • Esta música é uma epécie de "despertadôr de adrenalina" (uma maravilha)valeu .VIVA AO LEVEL42.

  • "You've been a very bad bass!"....slap it Mark, slap it!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Can't stop listen the the drum machine...

Mr Philip Gould ladys and gentlemens!!!!!

One of my personal favorite drummers together with Mark King makes a hell of a groove...

  • Very raw compared to todays 42, but love all !

Its nice as you can choose your era with 42 to suit your ear for the day!!

    Bloody fantastic!!

  • love Lindup's dance at 40sec!

  • got to be their best instumental; I love it so much....

  • Top of the crop L42!

  • funny thing is I saw them at the o2 and if you listen to the bass solo he does at the end is based around Sandstorm..I nearly creamed my pants!

  • lol this is some funky shit

  • grandissimi, il mio gruppo preferito!

  • This is the best version of this song. The one on their album pales in comparison. Since this was done later in their tenure of course. But I wanted this version when i bought it.

  • wow

  • Level 42 é a maior banda de todos os tempos!(tá prá naiscer outra igual).

  • Coooool !!!

  • Would love to see oasis, keizer chiefs, coldplay, arctic monkeys etc etc ATTEMPT to cover this 1...Level 42, True musicians ... Level 42 are the best, END OF !!

  • yay for pre 1985 - where you actually had to be a musician to get anywhere in the charts!

  • Oh dear, Mark forgot the words.... :-/

  • Level at their best.

  • Esta música levanta até defunto.Ela foi feita esclusivamente para dançar!(e levar tôdos ao délirío!).

  • what a great post.

  • This song is great man wow!

  • this totally and completely rules! If I played this in my covers band today - half the crowd would melt in ecstasy the other would boo me off stage!!!

  • heh do it anyway.

  • Hahaha ... Mooi !

  • ourageous solo

  • outstanding

  • OMFG look at his face from 0:56 to 1:02-)) ahahaha:-)

  • you try playing bass like that ...this is incredible! He's playing hardcore, of course his face is looking that way

  • The most I like on ´em are the incredible good bass grooves. That´s what they´re unique for.

  • is this from a DVD?

  • Good question, I'd like to know myself. Is this on DVD morganroussell?

  • ye sits on DVD, its called (surprisingly ensough) level 42- at rockpalast

  • this the best music ive seen from the 80's

  • I still don't get it

Why were those awful mullets so popular back then?

  • I wish my girlfriend was a Jaydee, then I could slap the shit out of her...

  • too-che' !!

  • phil rules.

mark, quit with the feckin scat.

  • one man doesnt make a band ... it took all 4 of em to do that !!!

  • Jolly good stuff...and Mark's built like a tank there ha

  • More like built like a tank-top .

  • he is fit enough to hot shoe 7 Shire horses in an hour here

  • Comment removed

  • hahahah schüdelelbadi oouuu schibelewi schibelebow:-) ahahah

  • I love this song, but the main bass line i almost alike to their song "Hot Water".

This one is just faster. and awesome

  • Mark, love ur boots!!! xxxx

  • jus when you thought it couldn't get any better the groove from hell comes in at 3.38..its toooo goooooooood!!

  • It just doesn't get better than this! Hammering on all 8's. Bravo to all, and may you always make outrageous music.

  • anyone know where i can download this song cus it is sooooooooo wicked

  • level 42 has so much in common with

    Earth Wind and Fire!!

Bad Dancing, Amazing Bass, Amazing Drums, Amazing Keys, Amazing Songs, and most importaintly..

both bands have forgettable guitar players!!!!

man... i want to hear holdsworth era stuff...

i can hear him double the key line right before the bass solo

    -f

  • JayDee, JayDee..lalala...PICK ME UP AND PLAY ME MARKKKKKKKKKKK

  • yea mike stay seated hehehehe....and goddam mark...ur da man dude...when the fuk r u coming 2 New Zealand?...u have fans here 2 dude....peace

  • Danke. Ein Meilenstein! Ollie

  • The best bass sound he has ever had

  • Its those JayDees, man!! See his little white one just sitting in the background saying..."aw, come on mark, play me too"..LOL

  • I love Mike, but he needs to not dance. What a dork!!! lol... And for all of your Die hard 42 fans, I mean that in a funny, non-malicious way...

  • I am a die hard L42 fan and u r correct about Mikes dancing...DORK!!! I have witnessed it first hand and it's scary!!! :-)

  • lol. I'm a hardcore fan myself, but you are so right.

  • They should put a chain round his ankle

  • One of the BEST bands...EVER !!!!!!!!!!!

  • THIS SHIT IS FUNKAAAY!!! There's a term called BritFunk... and it can definitely be attributed and originated by LEVEL 42..They took funk music and definitely put their own stamp on it with the jazz rock feel...Check out jazzrock group Return to Forever... Lenny White, the drummer...A major influence on mark

  • Whatever happed to the world today (2008) where all the talents? and nobody can write music anymore and no one can play live? do we need Xfactor? Long live Mark King and Level 42

  • i couldnt agree more!

  • Amen brother!

  • oh my god :O poor bass guitar lol .he's torturing it

  • 42 At their best.....x

  • nice bit of skat there by the king!

    i lvoe those jaydee basses!

  • can you believe Mark King had only played Bass for 4 years or so at this point.....what a player.

  • Natural talent, God touched and I heard he practiced for a crazy amount of hours each day!!!

  • my early tapes favorite.. i like the fact that signature comes in at 2mins..that's a 2 min intro..!! you go to love arrangement..nuts!!

  • These guys really have great musicianship and groove. Wonder if they've played with Casiopea as well?

  • Yeah they have. There is a file easily got on Gnutella which is Level 42 vs Casiopea: Galactoc Funk

  • Would love to see oasis, keizer chiefs, coldplay, arctic monkeys etc etc cover this 1... True musicians ... Level 42 the best

  • Damn I miss this one.

  • Play this on the forthcoming tour Mark go on please!!

  • Phil, Boon, Mike and Mark...its a pity more people don't know and appreciate this band. The greatest "pop" band ever IMO, because they completely transcend pop music. I wish they'd come to the states again, but I doubt that will ever happen. Maybe one day I'll get across the pond.

  • could this song get any groovier? show me someone who doesnt just wanna get up and groove, and ill show you a liar!

  • oh the 80s~ The time when every body had sleeveless shirts and headbands!

  • I was never a fan of Level 42, because of the commercial stuff they did, but I still love the real down & dirty stuff that they did so well. My son's 15 and playing bass and he really respects MK, along with Bootsy, Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Percy Jones, etc.

In these days of somewhat insipid music, it's great to hear that wonderful funky sound.

  • thanks mark, mike, phil, and boon for a lot of great memories.

  • Still my fave live performance by level, and probably my fave song!

Mark kings playing throughout the whole of this concert is so so good, his sound is perfect IMO

  • dayumn

  • tight..so sick...~~

  • The tightest shit ever. Phil is a hell of a drummer!

  • i love the scat!

  • sickness

  • Damn!! That was nasty! Still my favourite band. Thanks for the post, Morgan!

  • like the only youtube vid with 5 stars!

  • sounds like mark king

  • Bloody amazing bass playing.

  • hey guys be nice to see the original line up for one big fuck off concert a good 4 hours of 42 non stop thats heaven...

  • SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

  • SHAMMSHBLABY BLABY BLAABYABA ABLAHABLAHABLAHA SHABBADEE BLAH BLAH BAGH BLAH!!!!! << All i heard

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a case of "Mark stick to bass playing, pleeeeeease!"

  • that scat is surprisingly difficult to do..lol

  • this is probably my all time favourite clip of Level 42. It just demonstrates their sheer brilliance. There are a lot of popular bands right now who will never be as skilled as these guys. What's more, they don't even look like their trying!!

  • Phil is just f**** in awsome. I would have loved to see him play "the return of the handsome rugged man" live.

  • i agree, return of the handsome rugged man was a superb track, but hey they all were...

  • wow...

  • Phil Gould just great to watch on drums and underated in my opinion. Catch him soloing at ace club in brixton 82/83 just amazing.I think track is 42 get it on youtube if anyone has it.

  • It's so nice to see a great 80's keyboard player using a real fender rhodes instead of a yamaha dx-7!
