Wonderful playing... thank you. If I'm not mistaken there exists in the Philadelphia Orchestra Library, a score of the Rachmaninoff 2nd Symphony with cuts sanctioned by the composer himself. Ormandy's first recording of that Symphony on Columbia Records uses that very version. I actually think that it is better than the uncut version of the symphony which to my ears has too many repeats and tends to loose tension.
Yo me pregunto, ¿Será que existe alguna palabra que pueda describir la genialidad de esta pieza? Rachmaninov es increíblemente novedoso y genial, bellísima obra.
Please don't be ashamed for playing this fantastic concert!!!!
I strongly believe that making cuts to a symphony, and maintaining that form is an altogether different matter as of creating a transcription. Do you condemn e.g. Liszt for making those fabulous transcriptions from Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, (and so many others) ???
I did enjoyed enormously the brief videos that were kindly posted in Youtube.
I clicked on a youtube of Ginette Neveu playing Gluck - Mélodie from Orfeo ed Euridice, and at the same instant, on my media player, Valentina started playing Rachmaninoff's 5th Concerto Second Symphony Cadenza Warenberg -- and before I realized the mistake, the two pieces played together in the most exquisitely beautiful counterpoint of violin and piano! Try it--
Liszt and many others made various versions of their works orchestral and instrumental without any qualms. I loved this. It should be in the regular classical catalog for listeners to purchase. Thank you so much.
Hello Valentina, wonderful playing as always. I remember reviewing your Chopin Etudes DVD for the EPTA Piano Journal (around 8-9 years ago?) and at the time you were playing a beautiful Bosendorfer shipped over from England (I think). I am curious to know if this is the instrument in this video?
you are my favorite pianist in the world, and i think the best one... i want to ask you one thing, have you tried 3rd concert of Rachmaninoff? it's my favorite and i would love to listen your version.. :) best wishes from Georgia
Ungava100: None of us need to be disagreeable to disagree. I listened to your Rotterdam performance of Rach. C. No.5. It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Retrospect will show you have created a benchmark for serious piano students for decades. Now it will be seen to be, as you say " doable." Moreover, you have left us with an exquisitely sensitive interpretation. Is there any way the remaining movements can be put on Youtube ?
Don't you sometimes have the urge to change some parts of it? I mean, once you know that Rachmaninov didn't write it himself it's "allowed" to change things. I'd change a couple things in the Warenberg version, specially in the 2 last movements.
@meneltar Rachmaninoff thought this piece to be perfect and he was very upset when orchestras tried to make cuts in this admittedly long symphony. He siad that every time it happens he feels like somebody is cutting his flesh. What Warenberg did is not just a cut in Rachmaninoff's flesh - it is a sex change operation LOL
I love the Symphony and now that the performance with Rotterdam is behind( it was at their request that I learned the piece ) I feel ashamed have played it.
@ValentinaLisitsa I agree with Rachmaninov that the piece IS perfect as the full-lenght symphony! I'm in love (obsessed) with it since the first time I've heard. I've always thought that some sections of it (like most of the material from the cadenza and the opening of the 4th movement) were very pianistic, but it may be natural because Rachmaninov was himself a pianist in his core.
Even agreing that the transcription is a mortal sin, thank you for your performance, it's the "purest" possible.
@ValentinaLisitsa You feel ashamed to have played it? Rachmaninoff may not like others messing with his works, but Warenberg clearly made a noble attempt here, and if Rachmaninoff heard your performance of this, he'd probably plant a big wet kiss on you. This cadenza, along with the rest of the work, is probably the most entertaining thing I've heard in a while. And if Ol' Rach ever rose from Kensico, he'd probably kick Alexei's butt and marry you instead, lol. Valentina for President!!!
@ValentinaLisitsa By the way, tell Alexei he's getting pretty good with that camera. His camera work has been adding to the entertainment value of your videos. Gotta give the guy some credit here. Oh, and your Rach 5 interview with Pieter was incredible. You come off VERY well in your interviews. There's something very appealing about your persona. Now get your butt to New Jersey so I can finally get to see you play!! - Brian from NJ
Don't wanna be a smartass here, but Goethe apparently didn't like Schumann's take on his Erlkönig (too much "interpretation", repeating of lines etc.), and I'm rather sure he wouldn't have liked Hamelin's either :D
So maybe this sort of thing shouldn't be too much of an issue?
Generally, I'd say unless you're bound by some job or contract you agreed to (e.g. performing a premiere for a composer, partaking in a competition with given parameters), there's no reason why you shouldn't be "allowed" to do whatever the hell you please.
You certainly can on Youtube - I'm not sure how easy it is if you sign a contract with a company, but then that's a question of feasibility ;)
There's a diminish phrase at 1:26 to 1:29 which is identical to a diminish phrase in the cadenza of the 3rd concerto! Do they have the same tones/notes?
Despite all dislikes to the concerto arrangement, I still think the first half of this cadenza is fairly idiomatic... Again, excellent playing from Ms. Lisitsa.
Valentina, like Lola Astanova, you should make a video where you play your warm-up routines, and mention some aspects of techniques, that can help some people who are having trouble with playing, or something like that. I think a lot of people would like it. Keep up the great playing!
@Theonedue You compare Valentina to Lola Astanova? They should never be brought up in the same sentence - the only Lola may do well is try to look good. But when it comes to playing, Lola is an amateur in comparison.
It had to do with warm-up routines, not individual playing skill. There both good, ones not that much better than the other one. As far as overall skill, I'd say Valentina cause she plays like a robot, with perstine accuracy. There both one of the best in the world, and have unique interpretations.
I'm learn quite alot about Rachmaninoff by listening to you, and I like what I hear! Thanx for sharing your talent and great love for music so generously. Cheers.
