My honest thoughts are this - I felt that after 2010 with the whole “where trance went wrong” nonsense that I needed to make a statement in a musical sense, and that meant going back into the clubs and coming out with a more raw edge. And I think that I did accomplish that this year.
I'd also include W&W,Cosmic Gate,Alex M.O.R.P.H.,Gabriel & Dresden(*sigh*),M.I.K.E.,First State,Ronski Speed,Sean Tyas,Blake Jarrell & The Blizzard...And when the likes of Dash Berlin,Filo & Peri,Aly & Fila,Arty ,Myon & Shane 54 and Shogun were introduced,everything was bound to go downhill.I actually like mainstream material by Sander Van Doorn,Ørjan Nilsen and Ferry Corsten.
But in all honesty,people,the true criminal is DJ MAGAZINE...

Some ppl just don't understand what to label the genre so its all either Trance or Techno..Trance has become the new word for "All electronic music is "Techno""..but this just isn't the case...Armada has become more popular, and the oldies are jealous.
Yes, electronic music has lost its touch over the past 10 or so years. The only real electronic music was back in the late 80's to the early 2000's. Then everything just went awful. Nowadays you got producers copying Deadmau5 and using his piano rhythm...rap and "techno" have intertwined together along with the "helpings" of auto-tune...Breaks my heart to see this happening. Whatever happened to that originality that trance artists once had? It's a shame to see how electronic music is nowadays.
@bigmanmirza I stepped over to prog house, the likes of Darren Fisher, Arthur Deep, Anse Source, Mossy, Deep Fog, to name a few...the real problem lies with labels and their demand on getting new tracks out the door...I prefer a no name, non famous producer that makes about 3 to 4 good tracks a year vs someone like Tiesto who's famous and makes crap music...he used to be good! fame and forture sold him out...shame!

I still listen to my favorite trance tracks from time to time, but trance became too "artificial" and generic when everyone jumped onto cheap (and of the same quality) vsts. Trance lost everything that made it unique when it lost analogue sound.
@krided Nowadays it's really hard to find good productions but I don't think that the cause are the vsts. What is wrong is that all production are made in the same way, with the same sound and the same structure. There is no experimentation, or sometimes they mix trance with horrible electro, and this is really wrong. However I still prefer trance to other EDM style, the good trance productions are way better than minimal or tech-house for sure!

Amusing, and i've been into trance since 94...does seem to have got worse this past ten years or so, dj now incorporates a lot of things now, not just playing records, it's a corporate machine not a dj in my mind.
Summery of the video opens with some Ravers and cuts to the DJs, at the end of the video we see someone taking video from Markus Schulz ''Do You Dream'' (which sounds like Trance from the 90s) they made it so at the end of the video he points to the Camera as if to point at you. Moral of this is Trance went wrong with the Fans. The fact that those listeners support ''Rockstars'' is what is wrong. Shame on them for killing quality music. This is what I see atleast.
I'm scared nobody realizes the video is not about trance being good or bad, but about the attitude of the most heavily marketed DJ's... Put back those hands on the mixer and work, damn it!

So If I was a superstar-DJ, I would never show my face or even appear on stage during the gig. I would instead replace the booth with one giant LED screen that showed pretty graphics while the music was playing.

The genre's simply become popular: with popularity comes 'spin-off tracks' that are more appealing to the masses. We know that a lot of the stuff you hear on the radio is crap, but that doesn't necessarily mean that trance with that 'real vibe' isn't still there - it just means you have to dig beneath the surface to find it :~)

It's mainly been Dennis Waakop Reijers who did his (poor) tracks. Calling them real trance is just an insult.

The video should be called 'Where Electronic Dance Music went wrong' instead. It's not only trance it's also every other genre and sub-genre, this just shows how the scene has evolved since it first began. Stop all the arrogance and just enjoy the music. that's what it was made for :)

@freakyalien75 my point was rather that as long as the scene continues to commend the rehashing of done-before ideas, the mainstream will continue to spiral down into a cheap commercial abyss of boring. Want a hit? Plagiarize a hit. 10-15 years ago, Sasha, Digweed, Oakie & Cox were the mainstream... music was interesting. Then Tiësto, PvD, Armin took over... now the mainstream is poppy electro-influenced dance type stuff, with the ignorant masses still insisting on calling it trance.

@chrirus2006 Point taken. Carl Cox was never my bag baby and actually sent me to sleep in priviledge as it never went anywhere. But Ive had many a great night with Sasha and Oakie. Can't remember ever seeing Digweed but know how good he was! I do have to disagree with you though on the others....their mainstream CDs for joe bloggs are very techno pop but I have had great nights with all 3 of the DJs you mentioned with not a pop tune in sight! PvDs 6 hr set at Turnmills was awesome! x x x

Amusing, and i've been into trance since 94...does seem to have got worse this past ten years or so, dj now incorporates a lot of things now, not just playing records, it's a corporate machine not a dj in my mind.

Summery of the video opens with some Ravers and cuts to the DJs, at the end of the video we see someone taking video from Markus Schulz ''Do You Dream'' (which sounds like Trance from the 90s) they made it so at the end of the video he points to the Camera as if to point at you. Moral of this is Trance went wrong with the Fans. The fact that those listeners support ''Rockstars'' is what is wrong. Shame on them for killing quality music. This is what I see atleast.

@jordanwaeles I think the problem is that trance is music that is PROGRAMMED, but our culture expects musicians to PERFORM.
So If I was a superstar-DJ, I would never show my face or even appear on stage during the gig. I would instead replace the booth with one giant LED screen that showed pretty graphics while the music was playing.

Electronic music has existed for barely 60 years, which is just a mere peiod of mankind's history. Could you imagine how Mozart would've reacted, if we went back in time and told him that music today would come from thin air?

The genre's simply become popular: with popularity comes 'spin-off tracks' that are more appealing to the masses. We know that a lot of the stuff you hear on the radio is crap, but that doesn't necessarily mean that trance with that 'real vibe' isn't still there - it just means you have to dig beneath the surface to find it :~)
