It's not that the horses can easily jump the jumps or that the jockeys don't learn how to jump them properly it's that the horses are going too fast, they're not on the right lead. Yes the horses could jump them easily but they're going way too fast, it's hard for them. . . This just needs to be banned all together. . . It's horrible and cruel.

I think the horses can jump these jumps. (sorry for my bad english i'm from germany x) ) But the riders are too lazy, to learn jumping with these horses :/

To all those people who want to ban horse racing because of the deaths of a very small percentage of the racing horses, please take a moment to think just how many thousands of horses will be shot on the spot if jumps racing is banned. Why not try and make the sport safer for the horses instead?

There are approximately 1,500 race meetings held annually at Britain’s 60 racecourses, with over 90,000 runners competing in some 9,000 races.

So yes as i said, a very small percentage.

Its amazing how the lady with the tan jacket never seemed to notice. She just kept watching the race. My horse use to be a race horse but his owners stoped him from racing because they said he didnt like it. He still loves to run but he also loves jumping.

Think about it, if a horse didn't want to do it could a human REALLY MAKE them do it? Think about how much a horse weighs and how much a human weighs. Horses can easily overpower humans if they want to.

Before you complain, these horses ARE treated humanely, infact these horses are worth so much money they get the best treatment. Better then most 'pet' horses!

No. 1 the people were not supposed to be there they were free loaders.

No. 2 the reason they hide the horse while the vet is working is so that the horses can't get more stressed, the children can't see the horse and so they can't offend peoples sensitivity when they put it down.

you may as well ban the use of horses for stock work, pony club and flats racing.

I'm not for racing nor am I against it, and I own my own horse, but can I just say that most top eventing competitions feature a say, 2 mile course with 30 jumps? XC courses taking more than 10 minutes for one horse to finish, including hair rising jumps along the whole way. Show jumping featuring jumps higher than the horses themselves? Before you judge horse racing then watch XC on tv, thats all.

I can understand people saying that the racing industry is cruel to the horses, but when they bring human injury into the mix, that is going too far.

Like any sport those involved know the risks. In fact most sports are based in risk. Human beings naturally enjoy adrenalin and I'm sure jockeys enjoy racing for this reason.

The economy is shit as it is to ban this would destroy it altogether think of the amount of people working in the horse industry? saddlers, transporter, trainers, jockeys, vets the list goes on! @Chooky85 - It"s more about the 'entertainment' factor - innocent horses (and people) die so that people are entertained. Horses are instinctive animals...they will run...put an obstacle in their way and they will jump it...even to their own peril....

This is not a debate about Vegetarianism - where animals are bred for their meat....this is a plea to get a cruel sport banned.

Thank you for this video, but it would really be more helpful if the images weren't strobing. It hurt my eyes to watch, although I did because this topic is very important to me. Simply letting you know for the future. I think it would have more impact if we could actually see the images. And I support the epilepsy comment... just not a good way to show footage.

y'all should add a warn on this for people with epilepsy, coz those sections of stop motion photosnapping style video footage could very much set off epileptic siezures with the flashing. I couldn't really watch it myself and I'm not epileptic, the flashing stop start picture stuff was hurting my eyes and made it awkward to watch.

@charlierocksxxx The lowering of jumps is what has lead to the increase of injuries and horse fatalities. It was an okay idea in theory, but the reality is a bigger jump forces a horse to slow down more, and lessens its likelihood of falling. The reason so many hurdlers and steeplechasers fall is the very high speed they have when approaching the jump, they simply don't slow down enough. Look over the ditch at NZ, the jumps are bigger, and way less horses fall and are killed.

It is an amazing thing how animals are used for greed. I read in "the Omnivore's Dilemma" that if our societies saw what was happening in abattoirs (etc) we would not allow it to continue". Here is a fact the Ausies should take note of. - Jumps racing in NZ is a lot safer because our fences are higher - you have to slow down to negotiate them, they still fall but injuries to horse and rider are less.

Some are saying that this incident is not due to it being a jumps race, but that's not correct. Being a jumps race there were multiple incidents and 6 of the 8 horses ended up without riders, running loose out of control. Banna Strand jumped a brush fence that looked similar to the jumps on the track, as he was trained to do.

My best friend has just finished a degree in equine studies.. She and her partner who has the same degree both told me while discussing jumps racing that it's physically impossible for a horse to jump this high at a gallop. The ideal pace for jumping is the canter, a horse is too flat and elongated while galloping at high speeds to be able to jump properly.

It's a dangerous sport which puts both horse and human lives in danger for the enjoyment of a few, despite this "industry" will lose profit, it is not a healthy activity, their joy is based on other's suffering, we should be wise enough to see it needs to be banned.
