0:20, did he hit the platform the bamboo's on? he didn't seem to lift the edge at the last moment. is that allowed in tameshigiri since it could damage the edge?
Incredible cutting abilities :) and to the comments below Sensei Obata was in the original teenage mutant ninja turtles 1 & 2 films as shredders number 2! This vid makes me wanna do some tameshigiri :)
Not necessarily offensive. The combination of his powerhouse techniques, beefy sword, and smooth utilization of body movements lend itself to resemble that. The main difference being the technique is extremely focused for edge control.
Wow, perfectly clean cuts and a great deal of skill. I don't understand, however, why he loads up so much for men-giri cuts. Is there a reason for that? I would think that when performing a cut, one would want as little wind up as possible. Is it just because he is cutting hard targets?
By men giri, I assume you mean the 12:00 to 6:00 cut (dodan giri). This technique is designed to cut very hard, thick targets. Obata Toshishiro sensei is cutting the bottom part of a tatame mat using this technique & it is very cut resistant.
I feel very lucky to have met Toshishiro Obata Kaiso and trained under him for our local seminars! it's clear from this video all the skill he has built up over the years!
awesome video.

he is showing you dont need a 15" tsuka
for tameshigiri - or a super wide kotetsu style mat cutter blade , like the tsuka mounted machete people are buying from hanwei these days.
