  • awesome video.

  • 0:20, did he hit the platform the bamboo's on? he didn't seem to lift the edge at the last moment. is that allowed in tameshigiri since it could damage the edge?

    thanks

  • @SethMan91 damn your right i never noticed that o.0

  • 0:55 = ownage.

  • japanese is the most famous in doing knife

  • I like the tameshigiri on piles of bamboo it's amazing that he cut those thick bamboos with 1 slash

  • Incredible cutting abilities :) and to the comments below Sensei Obata was in the original teenage mutant ninja turtles 1 & 2 films as shredders number 2! This vid makes me wanna do some tameshigiri :)

  • he is showing you dont need a 15" tsuka

for tameshigiri - or a super wide kotetsu style mat cutter blade , like the tsuka mounted machete people are buying from hanwei these days.

  • wow, those are really agressive but very clean cuts

  • he looks like lord norinaga from ninjaturtles III i think lol

  • That's because he played as him in that movie. At least I think so, he played as someone in the Ninjaturtle movies.

  • as offensive as this is going to sound to some people, it looks like hes just swinging a bat

  • Not necessarily offensive. The combination of his powerhouse techniques, beefy sword, and smooth utilization of body movements lend itself to resemble that. The main difference being the technique is extremely focused for edge control.

  • @RaNDyCHaOs well, he certainly hold his sword as if it would be a baseball bat. anyone knows why?

  • @RaNDyCHaOs You have to admit thats a pretty fast and sharp bat.

  • @RaNDyCHaOs tameshigiri isn't kenjutsu.

  • that was really impressive.

  • Obata is a modern day samurai

  • good cuts but you cant argue that he looks like hes playing baseball.

  • that's only because he makes it look so easy. But it's not....

  • i meant that massive overswing of his...

  • thats totally true.

  • he's definitely impressive. his cuts are very clean and swift.

  • Amazing. The skill level is stunning.

  • Stunning.

  • With all due respect...I think he is better now.

  • Can't argue with you there

  • Excellent tameshigiri.

  • Wow, perfectly clean cuts and a great deal of skill. I don't understand, however, why he loads up so much for men-giri cuts. Is there a reason for that? I would think that when performing a cut, one would want as little wind up as possible. Is it just because he is cutting hard targets?

  • Yup, answered you own question :-P

  • By men giri, I assume you mean the 12:00 to 6:00 cut (dodan giri). This technique is designed to cut very hard, thick targets. Obata Toshishiro sensei is cutting the bottom part of a tatame mat using this technique & it is very cut resistant.

  • It was used historically to test swords.

  • he's the guy from teenage mutant ninja turtles that played tatsu

  • Pleasure to watch such a skilled master.

  • Great Tameshigiri! Thanks for the video

  • I feel very lucky to have met Toshishiro Obata Kaiso and trained under him for our local seminars! it's clear from this video all the skill he has built up over the years!
