Coming back to this tune after a year or so, the structure and variety in its movements are just symphonic. For non-musicians, it's hard to convey how challenging this piece is to perform. When Brian Wilson did it on Letterman, they brought a huge ensemble to make sure the song got delivered full-strength. RE: people swaying in a bar--a beautiful image, but they'd need to be alumni of the Vienna Boys Choir or something to get this masterpiece right!
I can picture a bunch of people sitting at the bar, holding up their mugs of beer, swaying back and forth and singing along to this song - LOL! This is a great beer drinking song.
Went sailing just this weekend and had this song and Funky Pretty going round in my head all the time, when I wasn't thinking of anything else, but having a quiet moment at the helm. Great weekend..!
Yes, this is Blondie Chaplin singing lead, also on the live version on 'The Beach Boys in Concert' album. He also sang lead on 'Leaving This Town' (studio and live versions) and "Don't Worry, Bill" (live only), and part of the leads on 'Here She Comes', 'Funky Pretty' (studio and live) and 'We Got Love' (live only). I think 'We Got Love' and 'Here She Comes' is Ricky Fataar as the main vocalist, but I may be wrong!
This song was recorded when the BB's regrouped in LA. It was a last ditch effort by the producers to salvage what they felt was a doomed album.
Actually it was Dennis, not Carl, who was supposed to sing the lead, but the rest of the story is true. I will post an excerpt from an article about the sessions in reply to this post.
Brian Wilson was uninterested, so Carl Wilson recorded a backing track with ... Billy Hinsche and Ed Carter, along with temporary band members Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar. Dennis Wilson recorded a first stab at a lead vocal, before quitting and going to the beach, so Chaplin ended up taking lead (easily his best vocal ever). The backing vocals were recorded later by Carl Wilson, Chaplin, Fataar, Hinsche and Gerry Beckley of the band America - Brian Wilson supervised this session by phone.
Hey,Cuz,,,So your saying that is Blondie Chaplin singing it on the "Live '72 Album " ??? THAT is MY favorite version of the tune, and would welcome the education on the tune, and related topics.(Anyone know of there is a vvideo of them doing it live ,also ?? )..Please educate me....Lou
I'm saying he sang it here on the Holland Album. I couldn't tell for sure if it is him on the Live '72 as I haven't heard it, but he was touring with them at the time.
Very cool ! I Just listened to the studio one AND the Live '72 "Sail on sailor" track that goes into "Trader ",and it sure sounds like him,and CARL on Trader. Now that i think about it, I may have known it already, but forgot over the years.Either way, I THANK YOU for reminding me.(and yes, a Mind IS a terrible thing to waste ! ).I am now Educated!
Van Dyke Parks had more to do with writing this than Brian. The song did save the Holland album from being scrapped. The vocals are by Blondie Chaplin, Carl was asked to sing it but went surfing instead. I saw Blondie sing this when he toured with Ric Danko and Paul Butterfield in '79.
i heard this song for the 1st time this past 4th of July weekend and i was blown away by it!! i had no idea it was the Beach Boys,...i'm a casual fan of their music, but this is now gonna be my all time favorite Beach Boys song. i freaking love it.

Beautiful song even after so many years. Is it my imagination but, do I hear a little bit of Todd Rundgren and a dash of Beatles? Thanks for posting.

Love the blues/gospel vibe to this song. I'm not much of a Beach Boys fan, but this song always makes me sing along.

Surely a great song, but their BEST? No, I'll reserve that title for songs like "Cabinessence," "Surf's Up," or "Forever."
Let that not diminish your love for this song, though!

I agree 100% that it's their best song. It is about the ONLY song they ever did that I like, but I like it a lot...has such a breezy tropical sound.
