@RocStarr913 Can't agree with you there at all. This is such a quintessentially 80s sounding song. The first time I saw this ad there was no question in my mind that the song was from the early 80s.
This commercial was specifically referenced by Marco in Animorphs book number 20, "The Discovery", in 1998.
Quote:
"You want to know what it's like being a human up against a grizzly bear? Well, you know that 'da,da,da,da' commerical for Volkswagen? Anyway, take that Volkswagen and run it head-to-head into an eighteen-wheeler going ninety miles an hour. That's human versus grizzly."
i have a 2000 golf and one nite i was driving around and found a reallly awesome leather chair sitting on the curb by some trash cans...after shoving it into my car and lugging it home i now own a great chair! i played this song as i drove home!!! =)
I like how at the end of the commercial they take a shot at the black guy "In life there's passengers and there are drivers".... be a driver because passengers are little bitch faggot niggers did you see that guy? you don't want to be like a black guy do you? you want to be the white guy, thats right you want to driiiive only a broke ass mooching brutha is a passenger look at that nigger you don't want to be him do you? buy our car or else you're a nigger
@IFknHateUTube While I do agree that racial profiling is still a major issue in Western media, I think you're reaction here isn't doing much to help it. Swearing and going over the top isn't helping anything- point out the problem, explain why you think it's wrong, and then leave it.
@IFknHateUTube OR perhaps the black man is being driven by the white man because he likes to be driven around? Would you say the same thing of a black man in a limousine being driven by a white chauffeur? I think not.
i think i was 5 or 6 when this commercial came out, and the next day i went got a Trio tape. A tape people. i can't believe tape died with my generation. I still have my old walkman
True Free energy devices exist,But the Establishment doesn't want ppl to know this,Get a real free energy motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Join the revolution!
i don't get this commercial either (and no, i lived in during the 90s). it's just 2 guys driving around town and picking up a chair which they get rid off later on. about as exciting as looking at a grey wall.
@rx7here It's all in the narration: "It fits your life or your complete lack thereof." Obviously these guys have no life if they are picking up trash furniture on the street.
@freshPrincess626 I drove VWs for 13 years--first a 1981 Rabbit, and then a 1985 Golf GTI. The Rabbit was uninspired at best--it was VW's attempt to build a small car for the "American" market. Perhaps they succeeded too well, because I hated driving it.
I absolutely loved the GTI. I kept it for nine years, 180K miles and would have kept it longer, except for a fire caused by a plugged catalytic converter.
My only other complaint is thieves kept breaking into it. Guess they loved it too.
This goes right into favorites. This was my commercial 13 years ago, brings back memories. Arguably the greatest commercial ever. From the faces they made I'm guessing the chair smelled like liquid human waste.
I always heard that they where supposed to be gay. I've done this befor but it wasn't a chair it was a dresser and it wasn't a vw it was a volvo but the guy who helped me load it was still gay lol. Either way it's a super cute commercial.
It isn't gay it's 2 guys who just moved out of their homes and are in college. They are just driving around LA enjoying a Santa Ana Sunday. Desert winds making everything bright, and wonderful. I did the exact same things a few years ago.
-I- actually chose to give up a Sunday Afternoon and this commercial just happened to be aired, -I- end up shaking my Dadd pop's and told him that this game was worth watching ! ;-)
ilikemike97 is definitely reading too much into the commercial. There's nothing gay about this at all. I never watched Ellen and I saw this on television very frequently for a while.
Umm, I'm hip to gay people, have gay friends. I don't see this comercial as overtly gay. It's possible they're lovers or it's possible they're just buddies or college roomates. People look a little too hard into things sometimes I think.
With regard to this ad being "2 gay", i think it was like many ads that are aimed at a gay demographic: If u were gay (at that time), u would probably have perceived the gay subtext; if u were straight but "gay sensitive" (cool with gay issues and had gay friends) u would have probably also picked up on it; and lastly, if you were totally out to lunch, you probably would not have figured it out or enjoyed the vignette.
I remember seeing this ad (4 the 1st time on the episode of "Ellen" where "Ellen" came out for the first tv "outing"- it was clear from the placement that they were going 4 a gay target audience with this ad. However, most people to whom i spoke the following day did not get it- we were a far less sophisticated country in '97 with regards to gay rights/gay issues/gay awareness etc.
Interestingly, everyone i spoke 2 dug the song, tho.
The only car ad that made me want to buy a car. And now, VW is likely going to pass Toyota as the world's largest car manufacturer. Pretty good for a company started as a hobby by Ferdinand Porsche and promoted by Hitler
dayum, i haven't seen this commercial in a cool minute. i totally forgot about it. seeing it now though, what a flashback! this was so one of those commercials that had us talking in school back in the day.
Actually it is great, as a short film, but not as a commercial.
It was featured as an example of a poor ad in a marketing class I took. Studies showed people like and remembered it, a great trait for an ad. But people when asked didn't recall what the ad was for, a bad thing for the advertiser.
@billythehut Wow...you need to tell your prof to change professions. Seriously, if people remember the commercial, and they would take the time to actually LOOK for the commercial because they liked it so much, then VW has created a perpetual advertisement.
@sbrooks0178 Hi sbrooks0178, just saw your response, I took that class way back when the ad was new. Yes its memberable, and some folks such as us still love it. However, most folks at the time when surveyed even just after the ad didn't recall the product. So its great, but studies at the time suggested not in a marketing sense. In fact Microsoft's spoof that followed, meant some recall it with that product. So Micorsoft was able to grab some of VW's marketing thunder.
Well, I was in High School from 1997 to 2001, and I think in either 97 or 98m classmates were occasionally chanting this song at school, because of the VW commercial.
Has to be my favorite commercial of all time. My friend says that they stopped airing this because it was quote "to gay". I never heard this before. I'm a gay man so it makes no difference to me. I just think it's a great commercial. Feedback please !
Holy cow, I'd completely forgotten how awesome this commercial was. The facial expressions when the stench of the chair overwhelms them? Perfection. I cried a little. (OK, maybe not, but still.)
You would have never known "Da Da Da" came out in 1982. Certainly, at the time, I saw this commercial, I had no clue. It totally transcended its time. It fit in perfectly with the alternative rock that was popular at the time.
this is hilarious because myname is Da, and my friends and classmates always teased me about the commercial and sing Da da da...anyways i liek this commercial.
There's no way it was '97, i remember this commercial was out when i was in Elementary school. A friend of mine from that time was talking about this commercial after we were jammin' out in his basement to the newer song by Onyx "Slam" which was released in '93.
Plus this body style Golf was released in '93, the '97 Golfs were slightly different...face lifted in '96 and that has the grill of the pre facelift. Steering wheel looks really early...non airbag early, my two '95s had airbags atleast.
i have been looking everywhere for this commercial!! I got drunk one night and started humming this stupid song, then realized where i remember hearing it and went in search! Now i found it... what now?
I remember watching this commercial back in the day, and I had *no* idea that it was my exact car (1997 tornado red Golf Trek, which I bought a few years back) until I saw this video yesterday. But I have to point out that there is no WAY that chair would fit in the back, even with the seats folded down and the rear hatch panel removed, which leaves about 3 feet of height, and maybe four feet wide at the least. Still, it's a great commercial! :-)
No, she's the woman who was in the first VW golf ad in the "drivers wanted" series. The name of the ad was "Cappuccino Girl" but I can't find it anywhere.
My Favorite Song ever. Been looking for forever. Finally Found it on barnes and noble. Now, I must find the skeleton thing. The song is by Trio. any questions?

I remember watching this commercial back in the day, and I had *no* idea that it was my exact car (1997 tornado red Golf Trek, which I bought a few years back) until I saw this video yesterday. But I have to point out that there is no WAY that chair would fit in the back, even with the seats folded down and the rear hatch panel removed, which leaves about 3 feet of height, and maybe four feet wide at the least. Still, it's a great commercial! :-)

Thats funny! I wanted to buy this car because I was convinced that the cargo space was monstrous!

The woman's voice at the end sounds like Peri Gilpin - Roz on Frasier. Is it?
chysly 4 years ago
No, she's the woman who was in the first VW golf ad in the "drivers wanted" series. The name of the ad was "Cappuccino Girl" but I can't find it anywhere.
chinatowndude 4 years ago
Thanks much, Dude. Now that you've clued me in, it doesn't sound quite so much like Peri Gilpin any more.
chysly 4 years ago
FYI: This ad aired for the first time during the 1997? superbowl.
chinatowndude 4 years ago
First time I saw it was in 1997, but it was a whole different event—the "coming out" episode of "Ellen".
