  • Antwon Tanner? lol lol lol

  • 0:11 - 0:12

  • This is how I first came to know this song...odd that this commercial is now 14 years old, because I remember it like yesterday.

  • Love this commercial, been hoping to find it on here, they never show it on TV anymore. Thanks for sharing!

  • in european commercials we very often use humor :)

    lyrics:

ch lieb dich (i love you)

ich lieb dich nicht (I dont love you)

du liebst mich nicht (you dont love me)

ich lieb dich nicht du liebst dich nicht (i dont love you you dont love yourself)

yes thats german :) seems pretty easy dont you think? trust me it is :)

  • @nikolasmaes99 fuck German i hate German language!

  • @bafalo992 nah :) german is nicer than english

and you'd better stop dissing it cuz it will become the official language of europe probably, in the far future

europe counts almost 200 mil german speakers; this already is the largest group

  • @RocStarr913 Can't agree with you there at all. This is such a quintessentially 80s sounding song. The first time I saw this ad there was no question in my mind that the song was from the early 80s.

  • The greatest commercial ever

  • its the sakata song . LMAO saaa kaaa taaa ... :P

  • @utubemeh lol, sakata actually copied da da da

  • Without a doubt the best commercial of all time!

  • This commercial was specifically referenced by Marco in Animorphs book number 20, "The Discovery", in 1998.

    Quote:

"You want to know what it's like being a human up against a grizzly bear? Well, you know that 'da,da,da,da' commerical for Volkswagen? Anyway, take that Volkswagen and run it head-to-head into an eighteen-wheeler going ninety miles an hour. That's human versus grizzly."

  • @dogman15 The Animorph books are great.

  • @MARZ8734: Have you read Book 20?

  • @dogman15 I think so, is that the first book about David?

  • @MARZ8734: Yep. Look it up on Wikipedia or Hirac Delest.

  • @dogman15 lol...Animorphs.

  • i have a 2000 golf and one nite i was driving around and found a reallly awesome leather chair sitting on the curb by some trash cans...after shoving it into my car and lugging it home i now own a great chair! i played this song as i drove home!!! =)

  • I like how at the end of the commercial they take a shot at the black guy "In life there's passengers and there are drivers".... be a driver because passengers are little bitch faggot niggers did you see that guy? you don't want to be like a black guy do you? you want to be the white guy, thats right you want to driiiive only a broke ass mooching brutha is a passenger look at that nigger you don't want to be him do you? buy our car or else you're a nigger

fucking racist cracker ass ad execs

  • @IFknHateUTube While I do agree that racial profiling is still a major issue in Western media, I think you're reaction here isn't doing much to help it. Swearing and going over the top isn't helping anything- point out the problem, explain why you think it's wrong, and then leave it.

  • @IFknHateUTube OR perhaps the black man is being driven by the white man because he likes to be driven around? Would you say the same thing of a black man in a limousine being driven by a white chauffeur? I think not.

  • @IFknHateUTube Somebody really needs to lighten up. Two roomies on a furniture run--so what?

  • Disney wants to make you think the 90's were all about everything exciting happening. Lies. This commercial IS everything that happened in the 90's.

  • i think i was 5 or 6 when this commercial came out, and the next day i went got a Trio tape. A tape people. i can't believe tape died with my generation. I still have my old walkman

  • Trio - Da Da Da song rocks!

  • The Best Commercial EVER

  • This song was in an 80's movie with Matthew Modine, Phoebe Cates, and Ray Walston, a.k.a Mr Hand....."Prviate School For Girls"

  • Comment removed

  • the woman narrating is Abbie on NCIS

  • @jacksoncompound Pauley Perrette? Come to think of it, it does sound like her!

  • I loved this commerical. I also thought the driver was so cute

  • oh shit, nigger

  • Comment removed

  • past 0:47 that woman that nararated sownds like Daria From Beavis and Butt-Head

  • the passenger shlod have been a girl

  • past 0:45 i ges the chair smelld like poop and forgot to frebreez it

  • i don't get this commercial either (and no, i lived in during the 90s). it's just 2 guys driving around town and picking up a chair which they get rid off later on. about as exciting as looking at a grey wall.

  • @rx7here It's all in the narration: "It fits your life or your complete lack thereof." Obviously these guys have no life if they are picking up trash furniture on the street.

  • @DrSamba1

lol, yup, but they're having a good time doing it in their Volkswagen Golf.

  • @freshPrincess626 I drove VWs for 13 years--first a 1981 Rabbit, and then a 1985 Golf GTI. The Rabbit was uninspired at best--it was VW's attempt to build a small car for the "American" market. Perhaps they succeeded too well, because I hated driving it.

I absolutely loved the GTI. I kept it for nine years, 180K miles and would have kept it longer, except for a fire caused by a plugged catalytic converter.

My only other complaint is thieves kept breaking into it. Guess they loved it too.

  • Looks like me and my best friend driving around in my Passat on the weekends... good times.

  • This commercial reminds me of how awesome the 90's were *faved* :D

  • Okay, now someone find the commercial for the ABC show "Spin City" that was a parody of this spot!

  • Can anyone tell me why is this so genius? Really, I think I don't get the commercial... =/

  • This has to be the best commercial from the late 90s!

  • OMG thats my car...except mine is silver and i totally scored a free chair yesterday....luckilly mine wasnt stinky...

  • This goes right into favorites. This was my commercial 13 years ago, brings back memories. Arguably the greatest commercial ever. From the faces they made I'm guessing the chair smelled like liquid human waste.

  • I also like this commercial. Does anyone remember the promo commercial for the t.v. show Spin City that parodied this commercial.?

  • damn i remember this from like 3rd grade.

i think it was like 97'

  • I always heard that they where supposed to be gay. I've done this befor but it wasn't a chair it was a dresser and it wasn't a vw it was a volvo but the guy who helped me load it was still gay lol. Either way it's a super cute commercial.

  • Da da da. Ich lieb' dich nicht. Du liebst mich nicht.

There there there. I love you not. You love me not. (I don't love you. You don't love me)

  • It isn't gay it's 2 guys who just moved out of their homes and are in college. They are just driving around LA enjoying a Santa Ana Sunday. Desert winds making everything bright, and wonderful. I did the exact same things a few years ago.

Old chair for the pad, or not; lol.

  • -I- actually chose to give up a Sunday Afternoon and this commercial just happened to be aired, -I- end up shaking my Dadd pop's and told him that this game was worth watching ! ;-)

  • Hell-lo! Gay guys picking up dirty, used furniture off the street?? I think not. If they were gay, they'd have been in Pottery Barn :>)

  • JPY64 - S O D A M N T R U E

  • ilikemike97 is definitely reading too much into the commercial. There's nothing gay about this at all. I never watched Ellen and I saw this on television very frequently for a while.

  • Umm, I'm hip to gay people, have gay friends. I don't see this comercial as overtly gay. It's possible they're lovers or it's possible they're just buddies or college roomates. People look a little too hard into things sometimes I think.

  • 2 collinwoodresident :

With regard to this ad being "2 gay", i think it was like many ads that are aimed at a gay demographic: If u were gay (at that time), u would probably have perceived the gay subtext; if u were straight but "gay sensitive" (cool with gay issues and had gay friends) u would have probably also picked up on it; and lastly, if you were totally out to lunch, you probably would not have figured it out or enjoyed the vignette.

  • (CONTINUED FROM ABOVE)

I remember seeing this ad (4 the 1st time on the episode of "Ellen" where "Ellen" came out for the first tv "outing"- it was clear from the placement that they were going 4 a gay target audience with this ad. However, most people to whom i spoke the following day did not get it- we were a far less sophisticated country in '97 with regards to gay rights/gay issues/gay awareness etc.

Interestingly, everyone i spoke 2 dug the song, tho.

  • yes, dont forget hitler.....

  • The only car ad that made me want to buy a car. And now, VW is likely going to pass Toyota as the world's largest car manufacturer. Pretty good for a company started as a hobby by Ferdinand Porsche and promoted by Hitler

  • dayum, i haven't seen this commercial in a cool minute. i totally forgot about it. seeing it now though, what a flashback! this was so one of those commercials that had us talking in school back in the day.

  • I remember this comercial

  • LOL! that's the greatest commercial ever xD

  • @XxMrsCoreyFeldmanxX I agree that this is THE best commercial EVER!!!

  • Actually it is great, as a short film, but not as a commercial.

It was featured as an example of a poor ad in a marketing class I took. Studies showed people like and remembered it, a great trait for an ad. But people when asked didn't recall what the ad was for, a bad thing for the advertiser.

  • I always remembered what it was for, the da da da song was synonymous with Volkswagen at that time.

  • @billythehut Wow...you need to tell your prof to change professions. Seriously, if people remember the commercial, and they would take the time to actually LOOK for the commercial because they liked it so much, then VW has created a perpetual advertisement.

  • @sbrooks0178 Hi sbrooks0178, just saw your response, I took that class way back when the ad was new. Yes its memberable, and some folks such as us still love it. However, most folks at the time when surveyed even just after the ad didn't recall the product. So its great, but studies at the time suggested not in a marketing sense. In fact Microsoft's spoof that followed, meant some recall it with that product. So Micorsoft was able to grab some of VW's marketing thunder.

  • Well, I was in High School from 1997 to 2001, and I think in either 97 or 98m classmates were occasionally chanting this song at school, because of the VW commercial.

  • I was in high school from 1997 to 2001 too. It reminded me of football Sundays.

  • This commercial has stuck with me since it aired in i believe 1993, fuck you haters.

  • no it was 96

  • Few years too early.

    1997.

  • Great commercial (and tune).

  • Has to be my favorite commercial of all time. My friend says that they stopped airing this because it was quote "to gay". I never heard this before. I'm a gay man so it makes no difference to me. I just think it's a great commercial. Feedback please !

  • @collinwoodresident Stop being gay.

  • LordVader89 what a stupid name.

  • warlockskz the worst name ever

  • I love the Germans!

  • Holy cow, I'd completely forgotten how awesome this commercial was. The facial expressions when the stench of the chair overwhelms them? Perfection. I cried a little. (OK, maybe not, but still.)

  • definatly one of the funniest commercials i've seen.

  • SKILLS! OTH:]

  • You would have never known "Da Da Da" came out in 1982. Certainly, at the time, I saw this commercial, I had no clue. It totally transcended its time. It fit in perfectly with the alternative rock that was popular at the time.

  • i was about four when this came out. i still remember this song being like the best fucking thing ever. it's alright.

  • This is one of the best commercials EVER! I don't think anyone knows the name of the band that sings this song.

  • Trio.

  • i bet yall didnt notice the german in this song

  • Ich lieb dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht. uh huh

  • I've always heard it as "Ick lick lick lick, do lick lick lick, uh huh" and thought it was just nonsense, rather than German.

  • THIS is the ad that sold me on VW. I bought a Jetta instead because it came with a really sweet TREK bike. Still have both. Still work great.

  • I totaly LOVE this commercial. When this was airing, if I had had the money, I so waould have run out and bought one. Thanks for posting this.

  • i hav a copy of the skeleton toy the guy plays with

  • this is hilarious because myname is Da, and my friends and classmates always teased me about the commercial and sing Da da da...anyways i liek this commercial.

  • what a chootia commercial bhenchod vat the puck

  • skills from one tree hill!

  • Nostalgia high.

  • Brings back memories, a commercial that definitely sticks with you for a very long time.

  • I would of been funny if they used that hitman from No Country For Old Men for this commercial and he was just murdering people left and right.

  • wha????

  • watch?v=8vJ-uBjQS5M&feature=related#

  • This commercial was da shit back in the day haha.

  • is it just me or is there something about having a VW and living in cali

  • TAT'S SKILLS FROM OTH

  • hahaha yea

i'm embarassed that i recognized him...

  • Is it East L.A. or Echo Park where the pick up the chair?

  • how many years has it been since this was aired?

...it's still a joke in our household.

  • 1997.

  • There's no way it was '97, i remember this commercial was out when i was in Elementary school. A friend of mine from that time was talking about this commercial after we were jammin' out in his basement to the newer song by Onyx "Slam" which was released in '93.

Plus this body style Golf was released in '93, the '97 Golfs were slightly different...face lifted in '96 and that has the grill of the pre facelift. Steering wheel looks really early...non airbag early, my two '95s had airbags atleast.

  • I remember this commercial appearing in 1997, too. Everyone I knew loved this commercial!

  • Sooo... the couch farted?

  • That's "4 stacks" in the background. Looks like it was filmed in Pacoima near Whiteman Airport.

  • Dude! I just found my little VW skeleton toy - we bought our Jetta the same time the

    commercial was on air.

  • Bill Gates & Steve Ballmer even copied this commercial. I love it & it's so simple.

  • Aww, I remember this from when I was a kid! It was always hilarious to me. And apparently, it still is.

  • I was about to say "what do you mean, when you were a kid? It was like 4 years ago!" but then I looked and it was from 1997! Man, time flies!

  • Hehehe, yes. Or our brains slow down. I had no idea it was that old :)

  • I have the poster for this ad.

  • hey this is the song for them sakata biscuits. so instead of da da da its sa ka ta ^,^

  • That's Skillz (Antwon Tanner) from One Tree Hill!

  • I loved this commercial :)

  • song name?

  • da da da by trio. a hit of the neue deutsche welle in 1982.

  • That song is cool. yo mamma

  • the dude in the commercial is on One Tree Hill

  • This noise of this music makes me think to the big moustache

Le bruit de cette musique me fait penser à la grosse moustache

Diese Geräusche dieser Musik lassen mich zum grossen Schnurrbart denken

  • What year was this?

  • 1997. I think it premiered in the Ellen episode where she came out.

  • 11 Years ago? It seems just like yesterday.

  • It was close, I remember seeing it on that Ellen episode but I also had seen it before.

  • well aparently, i was about 10 years old when this commercial came out, and its still fresh in my mind.

    now that's good advertising ;]

  • one of the best VW commercials

  • Damn now I must go buy a VW!!!

  • This commercial is what sold me on a VW. I got the same one for my 17th birthday!

  • I was 8 when this commercial came out and I still remember it like it was yesterday. Da da da

  • i have been looking everywhere for this commercial!! I got drunk one night and started humming this stupid song, then realized where i remember hearing it and went in search! Now i found it... what now?

  • I remember watching this commercial back in the day, and I had *no* idea that it was my exact car (1997 tornado red Golf Trek, which I bought a few years back) until I saw this video yesterday. But I have to point out that there is no WAY that chair would fit in the back, even with the seats folded down and the rear hatch panel removed, which leaves about 3 feet of height, and maybe four feet wide at the least. Still, it's a great commercial! :-)

  • no it would fit, I tried it.

  • Hahahaha.

  • :)

    -orangeflava

  • Thats funny! I wanted to buy this car because I was convinced that the cargo space was monstrous!

  • the trains looked like bombardiers. the ones that are in use in toronto for the GO lines.

  • I love this!! reminds me of something I would do..LOL

  • The woman's voice at the end sounds like Peri Gilpin - Roz on Frasier. Is it?

  • No, she's the woman who was in the first VW golf ad in the "drivers wanted" series. The name of the ad was "Cappuccino Girl" but I can't find it anywhere.

  • Thanks much, Dude. Now that you've clued me in, it doesn't sound quite so much like Peri Gilpin any more.

  • FYI: This ad aired for the first time during the 1997? superbowl.

  • First time I saw it was in 1997, but it was a whole different event—the "coming out" episode of "Ellen".

  • excellent quality BRAVO!!

  • My Favorite Song ever. Been looking for forever. Finally Found it on barnes and noble. Now, I must find the skeleton thing. The song is by Trio. any questions?

  • Cool advert, and that's my car in it! (well, not literally my car, but still)

  • This commercial is awesome.

  • What song is this?

  • This song is 'Da Da Da I Don't Love You You Don't Love Me Aha Ah' from the band Trio.

  • Ten years later this is still a great commercial to me!

  • Oh yeah.

  • che na russkom chto li pesnja?

  • I don't know. It doesn't really seem like they're gay to me

  • No that's just a rumor.

  • da da da

  • My favorite volkswagon commercial. SO random you have to love it.

  • totally.

  • there there there! ;-)

  • da da da!

  • What?

  • heh great commericial

  • Da da da

  • Ich lieb' dich nicht, du liebst mich nicht.

  • funny cos it's stupid
