  • would that keep carriers from remote activating the mic or the camera

  • @MetalAcitistJim Nope, the phone functions as normal, it doesn't know it is hijacked. It is like doing a wire tap.

  • good job my network is 3G only, and I use secure connections for data.

  • @maxsonic1 LOL. No network is 3G only (you can force this on a certain set of nokia phones). and there is no way to force secure only for data especially if you are running apps. But if little lies help you sleep at night, keep telling them.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom I'm on 3 mobile here in the UK which is a 3G only network ;P

I have to add for arguments sake, if you are way out in the middle of nowhere they let you fall back to oranges 2G network (like an MVNO/network share setup), but that fall back if turned off everywhere else,

so it really is 3G or no signal

  • @maxsonic1 Nope. If you listened / Understood the video. The attack involve jamming the 3G so you fall back.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom but there is no 2G to fall back to as 3 mobile have turned off the 2G fallback in all areas you can get a 3 mobile signal, meaning that if you were to fall back to a 2G signal you would already not have a 3G signal as you are out of 3's service.

  • @maxsonic1 the device provides the "2G". There doesn't need to be any. In fact it works even if your phone thinks it is out of service for grabbing data requests.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom ah so that little box forces you to connect to it via 2G but it itself connects to your network (in my case 3 mobile) via 3G so that box will have to do a 2G to 3G conversion?

might have to set up that VPN server to route all my data through sooner rather than later, windows has a VPN server built in that I have been told you can use for an internet pass through eg from a phone/PC, is that a good way to go? a 3rd party one is an option but using your own is way more geeky.

  • @maxsonic1 That might might help with surfing but all your App Traffic would still be vulnerable.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom especially as the iphone disconnects the VPN when it sleeps, it would only really be useful for securing the connection on a free wifi hotspot

the only app I use is email I know you mentioned pop, but I assume gmail and hotmail via exchange settings with SSL is also secure, at least I'm now hoping it is

lol this is all getting confusing for an relative novice like me

I'm going to try to set up the VPN for free wifi, where I think the risk of being hacked is atm greater

  • Have you done it? Of course for curiosity's sake, that is...

  • The dark side of the Force...

  • If I trust the wrong app I can get snooped as well, right? Btw, nice beard Mr. Smith :)

  • Times like these i'm happy I wasn't Brandon's former employer

  • Can you tell me how to get it?

  • @TDmillerproduction check out ebay, anybody will fold for a little bit of cash

  • This is why I like you (among 27 others). You're willing to bluntly prove you're not safe and this is the basics to do it/look for and now beware. I appreciate the honesty and making people aware. Also if you're at CES or Defcon and looking for transport or good food, XDATv should be over anf my parents (Chefs) will be over cooking.

  • looks like I could put throw this hardware in a backpack and no one would know if I was walking around school with this

  • @itouchhacker241 You are going to take $10k worth of equipment, to spy on your classmates? Also you need to Cellular antenna's and a Wired Ethernet port... Those won't fit in your back pack.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom give it a couple years, it'll all fit into your pocket (as long as your modify it like sony did)

  • Most people will worry about it, most people don't need to worry about it.

  • @tmar23 well if everyone had the boring conversations you do may be not? What is with you calling your mom 3 times a day? Also, cut back on the puns no one really thinks they are funny.

As for your text messages, you don't need an Emote/Emoji in everyone.

  • @BlackwaterOpsDotCom It's hard to call dead people...

  • So, is there anyway to prevent your phone from sending data over a band other than 3G? Or, any other way to protect yourself from this?

  • @GeneralofWallace Most phones will not let you force 3G only, that is what makes this attack so scary.

  • Im curious about what you were doing when you discovered a need to use this equipment.

  • That's pretty scary. Have you ever done it?

  • what even got you into the position to know how this works, and subsequently own the gear?

  • @daveturney This isn't me, this is my Twin Brother. I never do bad things.

  • thanks

    great video
