the smiths were great but morrissey was the band we have seen him over 40 times now i think he is older and still good but i only like you have killed me i will always love him
It's so weird how the Smith not only abruptyl broke up over basically nothing, but there didn't seem to be any acrimony between band members, and yet, Morrissey and Marr never collaborated again, or even just hung out. Strangeways
@0O0O00O00 Even the Dire Straits are influenced by an american artist, called J.J. Cale, worth listening to it. American music has most of the time more glamour to it, while music from the U.K. is more into deeper lyrics and stuff, But for me it doesn't really matter.
@andywarstarforever prove it, NAME ONE BAND.... everyone KNOWS American rock is far superior to any english band. American music has influenced pretty much every british band.
@0O0O00O00 The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, Dire Straights, New Order, The Cure, Pulp, Blur, The Smiths, Radiohead, The Who, Police, Arctic Monkies, The Libertines, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Queen, David Bowie, The Strokes, Laura Marling, The Beautiful South, Fatboy Slim. Just a couple there off the top of my head. American and English music are both different but obviously the best the World has to offer, no doubt about that so quit arguing over nothing.
@proripp Yes but he never added anything, and he only played live once, they never used any of the demos with him in and Andy Rourke came along before they had the name Smiths. plus he was pants. Marr said so.
by this logic you might say Morrisseys friend, who came on stage for their first gig dressed in drag and speaking french, was also in the band.
Markthompson123 I love you too. Anyone who likes the Smiths and still listens to them today is amazing. Why would I listen to awful autotuned chart music when I can listen to real music?
It's funny the way a lot of Smith fans don't seem to get in touch with Morrissey's lyrics what so ever they just seem to base the song on the theme of his voice and the background music... it's the mentantlity of 21st century music.
I am just reminded that revisionist history is a wonderful thing.
To me it just reminds me of how shit British music was in the mid eighties-the choice between the sickly pop of Wham,Bros,Duran Duran or ghastly self absorbed polemic's of the Smiths and clones (Lloyd Cole,Billy Bragg,House-martins) was no choice at all.
Thankfully US and German punk, techno, house and industrial on the way,and bands like New Order saw the future.
@dopplereffeckt675 Yes, although I enjoy several of The Smiths' singles ("How Soon is Now" is amazing), I think "ghastly self absorbed polemics" pretty much covers it. And Morrissey is such an acquired taste as a vocalist and performer. That said, there were gray areas between the sickly pop and whining at the time in England (some Depeche Mode, Siouxie, Erasure and Pet Shop Boys come to mind, as well as industrial like Coil and Nitzer Ebb) that I sometimes return to. Interesting doc.
I luv how cynical Morrissey's lyrics are. He's so mean and charming at the same time! That always appealed to me as a kid when I started listening to him/them. I also heard he was gay, which I found interesting that no one made a big deal about it.
I differ with the assertion that The Smiths arose during a period that music was floundering & stale. Many others were still providing good sounds. Although at the time The Clash, as well as The Cure, did have a dubious future so maybe that was regarded as the void needing to be filled. The Smiths did offer a melodic contrast to Goth & minimalism but regard the lyrics to recognize similar subject material albeit more personal & direct. Sometimes I consider their influence on reforming The Cure.
The bloke with the strange hair going on about somehow the smiths being unique because they were anti Thatcher must have a bad memory when he says,"these weren't fashionable things to say."Come off it,virtually all 80s groups of any substance and all the music media were completely anti Thatcher.
@1959canon1 Great band, but to say no one else comes close is a bit much. The Beatles are the greatest, but The Smiths, The Kinks and The Specials are what makes British music the envy of the world.
I saw Morrissey live in 2009, it was a very small concert, only about 1500 people. He played about 7 Smiths Songs and all the best of his solo stuff. It was one of the greatest moments of my life which i will never forget. I later found out through his homepage that this was actually his second favourite concert of the whole Swords-Tour...
