  • Interesting knowing so much suffering went on there.

  • I can't believe the town officials actually let them tear this all down to make condos. God Massachusetts has to have the stupidest population on the planet. I hope you all enjoy the crudily constructed bed you made for yourselves. Truly future generations will look upon your wisdom and smile.

  • I kept waiting for something to jump out (like in those corny videos meant to scare someone) but you did a fantastic job with this. I live in Gloucester (about 30min from Danvers) and I never got to see this building in person but I wish I had. My sister has taken some wonderful pictures of the place though before they tore it down. I don't know anyone in their right mind that would want to live there.

  • That place is beautiful, yet chaotic...I love it and this vid.

  • What a beautiful building. How sad that they let it fall so much into disrepair. I hope one day they fix it up and turn it back into the mental hospital that it was meant to be!

  • Never ceases to amaze me! What a waste!

  • that was creppy....as if the person viewed the place at one time and knew it was gonna go down in 20 years and went back to view once more

  • insane vid!

  • Your video is amazing. I think you have arranged a video and song that make her beauty shine even more. I wish she was still standing(all of her).

  • Very atmospheric :p

  • Very beautiful place. I love the history behind it. It's a shame they took it down.

  • Gives me a kind of sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, very well done.

  • beautiful building!

  • dang dude this is pretty creepy

  • Such a waste...

  • Where is this located? and is it still around? Great video- music is perfect

  • isnt this where session 9 was shot??

  • Dude, awesome and eerie video. The music captures the spirit of the place.

  • It is rather easy to appreciate how........ monolithic this structure is, with both the shots that have been taken, and the soundtrack selection. You've done a wonderful job, please, keep up the good work. Has anyone else noticed how most old asylums look to be modeled after castles or something?

  • very amusing and interesting thanks for posting this!

  • this is really nicely done. no effects, no bells and whistles. what state is this in?

  • What a fabulous-looking building, in spite of its uses. I especially love how it looks after snowfall. Cool. :)

  • I worked there in 1974 and 1975. Fast forward 34 years, someone found one of my cancelled paychecks from Nov '74 in a box in a closet before front-center was torn down. He gave it to me, with dozens of of other of the green paychecks from Arlington Trust Bank of my friends who worked with me. How they survived all these years not wet, not rotten, as-new condition like the day I cashed it. If anyone is looking for their paychecks for that period get in touch with me I may have yours! Bobby B

  • Shame what happened...

  • Yay!!!! You're creative with your music. I swear if I hear one of the songs everyone always picks for their youtube videos that doesn't have anything to do with their video I'm going to jump off a cliff... You're music went right with your video though!!!! AND I never heard it before!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!1

  • I've always been fascinated with this building. The architecture, however beautiful, represents such sadness and good intentions gone wrong. For being built to foster and care for the mentally ill, it is such a shame there had to be the mistreatment of patients and ignorance of their condition. One can only hope we as a society can learn from the mistakes made at Danvers State and asylums around the country.

p.s. It's a shame Avalon Bay took over. I can't even imagine the residual energy there.

  • insane asylums fascinate me. this is a really nice video, both beautiful and rather scary.

  • I'm not sure who is telling you people this stuff, but there was a fire once, and then they rebuilt part of it but it was abandoned in 1972 i think, and it was recently, (year or two ago) taken down to make room for condos, and there have been some haunting stories around those condos.

  • Fun place had lots of fun running around there late a night. Avalon Bay ruined it,.

  • This is well done; both beautiful and haunting.

  • beautiful job! love the hauntingly sad music!

  • from what i've heard abandoned asylums are not good places to be at night. Theirs one in oregon, i forget where (not the salem one) but I've heard some pretty crazy stories.

  • did the ppl die in the rooms when it got burned or was tht after it got shut down???

couse if they did may they all R.I.P.

  • it was abandoned when it burned down..may this building R.I.P.

  • lol

  • rest in pieces

  • the bink beds we had a t a christian camp were from an insane asylum

  • what music is this from?

  • it looks abandoned... why didnt you trash the place\?

  • spoken like a true delinquent

  • lol

  • it even looks creepy

  • can anyone tell me what the insane asylum is cause ive never heard of it.

  • It's in Danvers Mass...or was. It was abandoned, and scheduled for demolition but it burned down.

  • oh okay. thanks.

  • no it didnt... 3 lux. apartments the built up there did

  • its a place were you put crazy ppl

  • They're not called crazy people you idiot.

They're called the mentaly ill... not retards or anything like that. They're human, like us. If you call them retards or crazy. Your calling humans crazy and most of all, your calling God crazy and retarded.

  • It has nothing to do with God.

  • Whatever you say. ;)

  • Wow, you even bothered writing back.

    Kudos to you!

  • The focus of 19th century asyla seemed more on housing than on actual treatment. By the way it was in the news that they are planning to replace Oregon State Home(OSH), filming location for "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". The buildings still stand and some are in use, but are out of code in every way imaginable.

Today emphasis is on treatment - but the underlying causes of mental illness are what need to be focused on first.

  • i would have shit my pants if i went there...

  • that place was huge! there is no way they could have cleared it in just one week like

the Frank wanted to in Session 9.

  • where is this dump?

  • Danvers Massachusetts, ive been there before not inside because of secrity but i almost went on a tour there and its a pretty creepy place

  • To bad they didnt do like they did to theNorthern Michigan Insane Asylum and save ther entire structure. It is cool to see danvers without the boarded up windows many good times and its not haunted beenthere c

  • Holy shit :0 This is like Painkiller Asylum! :) WOOOOW... best places to film Half Life movie or so... :)

  • thats the sister asslyum to the one in tewksbury they are both haunted

  • this 1 is the more famous 1

  • wtf can you imagine living there? after all the horrible things that happened there. nooo way.

  • why does every asylum look like it was made in the gothic era?

  • 19th century architecture was thought to inspire hope&health. Instead of being functional, many thought it was important to inspire an atmosphere of grandeur,"hope", and "self-reliance". At these asylums, farm work, strolls through the outdoors, and physical work outside were encouraged to heal the mind, in refuge from the "toxic" environment of the cities. Scenic settings supposedly influenced the mind more than one's own physical body."Asylums" didn't work: patients were isolated and abused.

  • Excellent video. What's the background music. It sounds like Dead Can Dance, but which track?

  • So many abandoned insane asylums, people just aren't insane like they used to be...

  • What a shame that the gov't would let developers ruin this and turn it into condos instead of restoring it as a national site.

  • personally, i dont think the general public would mind if one abandoned mental institution was turned into something more habitable.

  • I would never live there! lol. I have this things where I like to let spirits rest in peace...yeah...lol. Pretty building though.

  • 2:01 actually looks like a ghost.

  • yet alot of it was burned and the fames were huge

  • the hole thing wanst burned only 1 part of it and its not called hawthorne heights its called hawthorne hill

  • i live down the street from here its a apartment building now and theres condows around it a couple of my friends live inside it because its a apartment now its rele nice now

  • what is here now

  • its still up but the people of mass. are demolishing it so they can build Condos there

  • I just want to sleep...please leave me alone.... I must be there for her, when she wakes uppppp?

But she never does : (

  • What's in the background at 2:01, a light reflection or something?

  • i wanna live there

  • the damn music scares the shit out of me

  • I'd go in there...only with an AR though.

  • yeahhh..im with you on that..an AR...and an AA-12 and a shitload of weed

  • wtf is an ar?

  • I think he's talking about an assault rifle.

  • oo lol my bad.

  • the place looks inviting to me. I would go in a second, especially at night. That would be the time to go to a place like that. Ghosts, bring it on!

  • what is the stories

  • creepy

  • the story's that i hear was gross i am glad that it was burned and I am even studing to become an historian, but i do understand!

  • How anyone could live in the apartments owned by Avalon Bay after knowing the history of Danvers State is beyond me. In addition to being born in Salem, I've lived in New england all my life and if there is one place in Massachusetts that's haunted this is IT!

  • The apartments are called "Hawthorne Heights" and is owned by a company called Avalon. I have walked through them and they are all really nice. They grounds are wicked nice too. hope that helps you.

  • reminds me of the level in theif....

  • Have the "Danvers state hospital" a new name after they built apartments in it? I was searching for photos on the net how it looks now bzw. photos from inside the apartments. Nothing found! Maybe somebody has an idea where I can find some!? If YES: Thank you for help...!

...and sorry for my bad english...

  • that is the one horror story my dad told me , he heard a voice in the corridor when he was getting into character, shat himself and ran! hes still totally shaken up about it , so get it up you , asshole :) aka pacsboy100

  • Easy girl! All u had to do was say so. None of ur previous posts say anything about him being ur dad. It sounded a little sketchy, that's all. Anyway, ur dad was great in "Children of Men" also. Peace!

  • pacby you twat! my dad IS peter mullan , so why dont you watch your mouth and get your facts right when you try to insult me!

  • Ya Danvers State held a distinct feeling. I went to school walking distance from there and would go up occasionally with friends to explore, it was truly a beautiful place to see but I can say that I remember that I would get excited to go up there and explore but the moment I saw that place it was like all of my excitement was replace with an empty lonely feeling. It was to bad my senior year of H.S. it was torn down. Really nice video....stupid apartments.

  • my dad was woriking in there , and he said that the place like possesses you! he was standing at the roof , and just thought to himself, what would it be like to just jump off and fly? honestly there is no way that so much pain can happen in one place and not be something still there ....!!!

  • LIAR! You got that from the 'making of' doc thats on the special features of the dvd. The actor, Peter Mullan, said he stood on the roof and, for a brief second, heard a voice telling him to jump. Ur dad was probably never even near the place. Be careful when u make stuff up...somebody's always watchin!

  • If you haven't seen the movie Session 9, I suggest you watch it. It was abandoned because newer hospitals were built and these type of facilities were obsolete. That and medical malpractice. Their methods were old and new technology brought medicine. Sadly, Danvers was demolished :(

  • I, too, have often wondered why these places are abandoned and just left to decay.

  • Makes for a great haunting atmosphere, whatever the reason.

  • I love the music!! I'm glad places like this don't exsist much anymore! they are just way to creepy. If only those walls could talk!

  • As morbid as it may sound, those walls would not talk. They would scream.

  • that place is hella pritty

  • y was it abondaned?

  • y was it abondaned?

  • its only 2 towns over from me... i live in Lynn, MA

  • i wish they left it how it was and not tear it down and build condos ... its 2 late now tho =[

  • yea

  • The structure and grounds are beautiful, and it seems to be full of interesting artifacts. Why is it (apparently) being allowed to rot? A shameful waste, if you ask me. It could be remodeled to make cute apartments.

  • ive been here twice with my boyfriend and some friends the place was amazing my bf cousins has a video with an evp of a man screaming in it... its sad that they didnt keep the whole building

  • thats depressing

at 2.18 what is it thats on the walls

  • clearly his shadow

  • were you with someone? because if i was by my self in there id die.

  • just the word ASYLUM scares the shit outa me

  • i agreee!!!!!

  • I completely agree with that, just the idea of a place like this is so haunting by itself.

I wish someone had taken a video inside Willowbrook State School on Staten Island before they made it a college. Mabye those few abandon buildings would work.

    Still, Asylum....very scarey :0

  • me 2

  • I've done some psychology in the past, and I'm aware that it is one of the most contraversial subjects out there.

And after seeing 'Session 9' I decided to do a bit of research, and in truth I think that ruin and it's past of ghastly surgery and pratices that were clearly inethical is creepier than the film, I was also shocked to discover that over 40000 labotomies were performed in the U.S and 17000 in the U.K. Horrific!

  • Dickhead an asylum is wear the mental are like serial killers freaks and their spirits are trapped inside the place forever

  • i have a question for you "yopp". just what does "wear" mean? as in "an asylum is wear the mental are" and you're calling someone else a dickhead? i guess you where your clothes dont' you. now not only the people that know you, but everyone here as well know you're an illiterate idiot.

  • It's not the patients that should be locked up.. it should be the guards that 'tortured' these poor humans... and i guess that some of the people who were there (or in any mental hospital/sanitarium) weren't even insane, the "government" (you know what i mean) just wanted to get rid of them... It's sad!

  • First off, you have no damn clue about what it is that your talkin about. Secondly, the people that was in the place were crazy, and there's nothing wrong with locking up a "mental" person. These are da kind of people that kill other people, and even themselves, so shut da fuck up homie.

  • why these places alwyas spooky? isnt just like a normal hosptable? ok maybe dumbg queston

  • because u kno there were crazy people in there and crazy people and ghosts dont mix well plus an abandoned hospital in general is scary cus u kno hella people died there

  • Danvers is NOT a regular hospital. The patients there were extemely mistreated for supossabley being "crazy". there were multiple suicides and frequent death. the treaments these people went through could easily be passed for torture. shock therapy, packs, seclusion rooms. there is no end to the terrible things that happened in that place. if your interested in learning about this read, project 17 by Laurie Stolarz. one of the best books ive ever read

  • isnt it against the law to do that?

  • very nice camera work and well put together.

  • Is that the chair featured in Session 9?

  • LadeePunk

the patients were forced to leave even though most were not ready to leave, im sure that some were transfered to other institutions. the hospital was very cruel to the patients and housed 2400 when the max capacity was 600. hysterectamies(spelled wayy wrong lol) originated at danvers state. they often tortured patients and were known for electroshock, many patients are burried in unmarked graves, and they are said to have found bodies during the demolition.

  • Wow. Thats disturbing.

  • Oh hell naw.

  • that was so so sooo sad........ i feel depressed.....

  • why this place is abandoned

  • Very haunting and fascinating.

  • What happened to the patients? what is so special bout the place? (i live in london so i've never heard of this place)

  • meet 2

  • Nice footage broham! ever consider going there at night?

  • pretty

  • Fascinating and interesting.

  • Im really not a big fan of danvers because what the doctors did to patients.they can't even say the name of it on tv because of how bad they where

  • do it gordie

  • how can you tell if its an asylum

  • you look it up... online, at the library, watch the movie "session 9"... then u tell me

    lol

  • My dad's friend used to work there!

  • Isn't this the place they used in the movie Session 9?

  • yes it is the building they used in session 9

  • Creepy place. Can't imagine how bad it was to be one of the patients. I'm sure the place had a lot of noise from time to time.

  • like your mom

  • I always pass this place on the highway. its soooo sketchy

  • my favorite asylum

  • they really need to convert that building into a museum, in memory of the people who went there.

  • Creepy looking place i know there was a fire there and i guess they rebuilt whatever damage the fire did what is there now

  • It's now Avalon Apartments so you could live there if you wanted to. The state never took care of the building after they closed it so it had a lot of water damage. It was too dangerous for people to go in over the last few years liability wise but some still snuck in.

  • when did this place burn down were was this place and was it empty when it burned down

  • thought they tore it done,in p.a.

was also in the horror film session 9

  • I wish we would preserve more of our buildings here in the U.S as it seems they do in say Europe. Especially a building such as this what a work of art!

  • its all gone now....makes me sad....it was pretty sick in there.

    ~R.i.P.~

  • they should renovate it. it probably would make a pretty good hotel

  • How long has this been closed

  • cool video

  • What is the music on this video. Its cool.

  • It's from the TNT mini-series "Mysts of Avalon". Great movie, beautiful music.

  • I liked your video better because of the music you used. I didn't realize danvers burnt down...

  • i would love to be able to get in there. I am a paranormal investigator in Oklahoma and we do not have any buildings that cool. It has

lot of history to it. check out Jeremy Benards Photos of danvers totally cool. diz

  • You're right, I shouldn't call you an idiot, I was out of line. I'm sorry.

But I highly recomend that you read "Mad in America" it's prety much the history of insane asylums and tratment for "insane" people. It's literaly sickening what they did to people. It seems like it's stuff out of horror movies but it's completely true. Everyone just covered up what was actually happening in these places. The doctors exagerated results and interpreted them in a way that benefitted themselfs.

  • (extention from earlier) The public, including magazines that promoted them, were mostly ignorant. I couldn't find anything about the treatment they use or have used at at the mental health institute, probably because it's still open, so i can't say anything about this specific place. But considering it opened in the 1800's I'm sure most of it's history is dark.

  • Thanks for the heads up on that book, I will make sure to get a copy.

  • Are you a complete idiot? They did literally torture everyone in these places. DO some reading on it

  • Awesome!

  • So beautiful on the outside yet so full of pain and suffering on the inside. I really love old buildings and as a person with mental disorders I've always felt for the people "treated" in places like Danvers. Would they have stuck me in a place like that 100, hell even 30 years ago? Scary.

  • I was a patient. they did torture you. unless of course, you think electro shock therapy in a bath of ice is enjoyable

  • my brother and his friends used to go there a ton

  • I'd LIVE there if I could! I'm OBSESSED with the place!

  • You can now, they are turning it into condiminiums, that is what didn't burn down.

  • great vid.

  • Awesome clip

  • Is'nt it amazing how the govt tries to erase the sins of the past by always ridding it of these places of torture ?

  • I love this place. I have ben thear befour!!!

  • If someone offered you money to spend one night ALONE in that place, would you???

  • Hell yah!!!

  • it depends how much money if its above $100,000 then yea, cuz i couldnt stand being there i would start hearin shit lol

  • About 35 or so years ago my friends father was called to do some e
