I can't believe the town officials actually let them tear this all down to make condos. God Massachusetts has to have the stupidest population on the planet. I hope you all enjoy the crudily constructed bed you made for yourselves. Truly future generations will look upon your wisdom and smile.
I kept waiting for something to jump out (like in those corny videos meant to scare someone) but you did a fantastic job with this. I live in Gloucester (about 30min from Danvers) and I never got to see this building in person but I wish I had. My sister has taken some wonderful pictures of the place though before they tore it down. I don't know anyone in their right mind that would want to live there.
What a beautiful building. How sad that they let it fall so much into disrepair. I hope one day they fix it up and turn it back into the mental hospital that it was meant to be!
It is rather easy to appreciate how........ monolithic this structure is, with both the shots that have been taken, and the soundtrack selection. You've done a wonderful job, please, keep up the good work. Has anyone else noticed how most old asylums look to be modeled after castles or something?
I worked there in 1974 and 1975. Fast forward 34 years, someone found one of my cancelled paychecks from Nov '74 in a box in a closet before front-center was torn down. He gave it to me, with dozens of of other of the green paychecks from Arlington Trust Bank of my friends who worked with me. How they survived all these years not wet, not rotten, as-new condition like the day I cashed it. If anyone is looking for their paychecks for that period get in touch with me I may have yours! Bobby B
Yay!!!! You're creative with your music. I swear if I hear one of the songs everyone always picks for their youtube videos that doesn't have anything to do with their video I'm going to jump off a cliff... You're music went right with your video though!!!! AND I never heard it before!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!1
I've always been fascinated with this building. The architecture, however beautiful, represents such sadness and good intentions gone wrong. For being built to foster and care for the mentally ill, it is such a shame there had to be the mistreatment of patients and ignorance of their condition. One can only hope we as a society can learn from the mistakes made at Danvers State and asylums around the country.
p.s. It's a shame Avalon Bay took over. I can't even imagine the residual energy there.
I'm not sure who is telling you people this stuff, but there was a fire once, and then they rebuilt part of it but it was abandoned in 1972 i think, and it was recently, (year or two ago) taken down to make room for condos, and there have been some haunting stories around those condos.
from what i've heard abandoned asylums are not good places to be at night. Theirs one in oregon, i forget where (not the salem one) but I've heard some pretty crazy stories.
They're called the mentaly ill... not retards or anything like that. They're human, like us. If you call them retards or crazy. Your calling humans crazy and most of all, your calling God crazy and retarded.
The focus of 19th century asyla seemed more on housing than on actual treatment. By the way it was in the news that they are planning to replace Oregon State Home(OSH), filming location for "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". The buildings still stand and some are in use, but are out of code in every way imaginable.
Today emphasis is on treatment - but the underlying causes of mental illness are what need to be focused on first.
To bad they didnt do like they did to theNorthern Michigan Insane Asylum and save ther entire structure. It is cool to see danvers without the boarded up windows many good times and its not haunted beenthere c
19th century architecture was thought to inspire hope&health. Instead of being functional, many thought it was important to inspire an atmosphere of grandeur,"hope", and "self-reliance". At these asylums, farm work, strolls through the outdoors, and physical work outside were encouraged to heal the mind, in refuge from the "toxic" environment of the cities. Scenic settings supposedly influenced the mind more than one's own physical body."Asylums" didn't work: patients were isolated and abused.
i live down the street from here its a apartment building now and theres condows around it a couple of my friends live inside it because its a apartment now its rele nice now
How anyone could live in the apartments owned by Avalon Bay after knowing the history of Danvers State is beyond me. In addition to being born in Salem, I've lived in New england all my life and if there is one place in Massachusetts that's haunted this is IT!
The apartments are called "Hawthorne Heights" and is owned by a company called Avalon. I have walked through them and they are all really nice. They grounds are wicked nice too. hope that helps you.
Have the "Danvers state hospital" a new name after they built apartments in it? I was searching for photos on the net how it looks now bzw. photos from inside the apartments. Nothing found! Maybe somebody has an idea where I can find some!? If YES: Thank you for help...!
that is the one horror story my dad told me , he heard a voice in the corridor when he was getting into character, shat himself and ran! hes still totally shaken up about it , so get it up you , asshole :) aka pacsboy100
Easy girl! All u had to do was say so. None of ur previous posts say anything about him being ur dad. It sounded a little sketchy, that's all. Anyway, ur dad was great in "Children of Men" also. Peace!
Ya Danvers State held a distinct feeling. I went to school walking distance from there and would go up occasionally with friends to explore, it was truly a beautiful place to see but I can say that I remember that I would get excited to go up there and explore but the moment I saw that place it was like all of my excitement was replace with an empty lonely feeling. It was to bad my senior year of H.S. it was torn down. Really nice video....stupid apartments.
my dad was woriking in there , and he said that the place like possesses you! he was standing at the roof , and just thought to himself, what would it be like to just jump off and fly? honestly there is no way that so much pain can happen in one place and not be something still there ....!!!
LIAR! You got that from the 'making of' doc thats on the special features of the dvd. The actor, Peter Mullan, said he stood on the roof and, for a brief second, heard a voice telling him to jump. Ur dad was probably never even near the place. Be careful when u make stuff up...somebody's always watchin!
If you haven't seen the movie Session 9, I suggest you watch it. It was abandoned because newer hospitals were built and these type of facilities were obsolete. That and medical malpractice. Their methods were old and new technology brought medicine. Sadly, Danvers was demolished :(
The structure and grounds are beautiful, and it seems to be full of interesting artifacts. Why is it (apparently) being allowed to rot? A shameful waste, if you ask me. It could be remodeled to make cute apartments.
ive been here twice with my boyfriend and some friends the place was amazing my bf cousins has a video with an evp of a man screaming in it... its sad that they didnt keep the whole building

And after seeing 'Session 9' I decided to do a bit of research, and in truth I think that ruin and it's past of ghastly surgery and pratices that were clearly inethical is creepier than the film, I was also shocked to discover that over 40000 labotomies were performed in the U.S and 17000 in the U.K. Horrific!
i have a question for you "yopp". just what does "wear" mean? as in "an asylum is wear the mental are" and you're calling someone else a dickhead? i guess you where your clothes dont' you. now not only the people that know you, but everyone here as well know you're an illiterate idiot.
It's not the patients that should be locked up.. it should be the guards that 'tortured' these poor humans... and i guess that some of the people who were there (or in any mental hospital/sanitarium) weren't even insane, the "government" (you know what i mean) just wanted to get rid of them... It's sad!
First off, you have no damn clue about what it is that your talkin about. Secondly, the people that was in the place were crazy, and there's nothing wrong with locking up a "mental" person. These are da kind of people that kill other people, and even themselves, so shut da fuck up homie.
because u kno there were crazy people in there and crazy people and ghosts dont mix well plus an abandoned hospital in general is scary cus u kno hella people died there
Danvers is NOT a regular hospital. The patients there were extemely mistreated for supossabley being "crazy". there were multiple suicides and frequent death. the treaments these people went through could easily be passed for torture. shock therapy, packs, seclusion rooms. there is no end to the terrible things that happened in that place. if your interested in learning about this read, project 17 by Laurie Stolarz. one of the best books ive ever read
the patients were forced to leave even though most were not ready to leave, im sure that some were transfered to other institutions. the hospital was very cruel to the patients and housed 2400 when the max capacity was 600. hysterectamies(spelled wayy wrong lol) originated at danvers state. they often tortured patients and were known for electroshock, many patients are burried in unmarked graves, and they are said to have found bodies during the demolition.
It's now Avalon Apartments so you could live there if you wanted to. The state never took care of the building after they closed it so it had a lot of water damage. It was too dangerous for people to go in over the last few years liability wise but some still snuck in.
I wish we would preserve more of our buildings here in the U.S as it seems they do in say Europe. Especially a building such as this what a work of art!
You're right, I shouldn't call you an idiot, I was out of line. I'm sorry.
But I highly recomend that you read "Mad in America" it's prety much the history of insane asylums and tratment for "insane" people. It's literaly sickening what they did to people. It seems like it's stuff out of horror movies but it's completely true. Everyone just covered up what was actually happening in these places. The doctors exagerated results and interpreted them in a way that benefitted themselfs.
(extention from earlier) The public, including magazines that promoted them, were mostly ignorant. I couldn't find anything about the treatment they use or have used at at the mental health institute, probably because it's still open, so i can't say anything about this specific place. But considering it opened in the 1800's I'm sure most of it's history is dark.
So beautiful on the outside yet so full of pain and suffering on the inside. I really love old buildings and as a person with mental disorders I've always felt for the people "treated" in places like Danvers. Would they have stuck me in a place like that 100, hell even 30 years ago? Scary.
Interesting knowing so much suffering went on there.

Creepy place. Can't imagine how bad it was to be one of the patients. I'm sure the place had a lot of noise from time to time.

they really need to convert that building into a museum, in memory of the people who went there.

Creepy looking place i know there was a fire there and i guess they rebuilt whatever damage the fire did what is there now
apey22 4 years ago
It's now Avalon Apartments so you could live there if you wanted to. The state never took care of the building after they closed it so it had a lot of water damage. It was too dangerous for people to go in over the last few years liability wise but some still snuck in.

I wish we would preserve more of our buildings here in the U.S as it seems they do in say Europe. Especially a building such as this what a work of art!

i would love to be able to get in there. I am a paranormal investigator in Oklahoma and we do not have any buildings that cool. It has
lot of history to it. check out Jeremy Benards Photos of danvers totally cool. diz

Thanks for the heads up on that book, I will make sure to get a copy.
veltro75 4 years ago
Are you a complete idiot? They did literally torture everyone in these places. DO some reading on it
123johnson890 4 years ago
Awesome!
WakeMeupinAnarchy 4 years ago
So beautiful on the outside yet so full of pain and suffering on the inside. I really love old buildings and as a person with mental disorders I've always felt for the people "treated" in places like Danvers. Would they have stuck me in a place like that 100, hell even 30 years ago? Scary.
veltro75 4 years ago
I was a patient. they did torture you. unless of course, you think electro shock therapy in a bath of ice is enjoyable
