  • if i have just a small 30 gallon tank, and want to do just a little bit of coral, is a sump necessary? i have a protein skimmer, and my Solinity/SG is 1.025. Can i get some help, I'm just a beginner!!

  • hi might eb a silly question bud but your overflow box how does it keep a constant flow and how did ypou start it i noticed the small breether pipe was that to suck to get the flow moveing ?

  • what is the pump speed do you use GPH>?

  • Good start, but that is really not enough flow for a 125 gallon tank. You need an overflow with two exit tubes and a sump with two as well. See mine in my videos.

  • Nice batch of chaeto...how's ur nitrates?

  • Thanks for the video

  • thats really smart idea..thnx for the tip!

  • wait you dont even have a protien skimmer you need to get one try amazon.com or ebay it would FILTER out all the "BAD STUFF" ;)

  • Is it a headach to clean?

  • Never thought about the hole on the return pipe. glad i watched.

  • great info thanks man

  • shmoke and a pancake?

  • Where you got skimmer m8 ?

  • @MsSitkiewicz he doesn't use one

  • So as you can see, it's pretty simple..

  • Sweet. All my questions were answered by this vid.. Tx. awesome!

  • what kind of pump do u have?? i have a rio 3100 its too hard to regulate the flow seems to be to strong and to weak when i turn it down.

  • Very smart :) It took me a while to figure out why you needed a hole on the outlet tube :P

  • Very Nice design. Im implementing this design for my tank aswell. Thanx man!

  • Nice set up if you look in my vids you can see that my sump is done a bit backwards than youres. but my sump is built into a wet dry. i found pvc better use as pvc emmits less noise than other hoses. if you check out my return spout that is shooting the water. what i did was i made a sort of an L long side connecting to the hook of the return and an elbow and another pvc. then i burnt it. i will go with your idea. because i have to lift th L up to beak siphon.

  • fdsf

  • sounds complicated seems like it works great for you tho

  • bioballs work better if theu have a drip plate and some of them are out of the water

  • where your skimmer?

  • where did you get the sump pump?

  • @lanegjones ebay

  • @mingoyai m2 i got it from ebay my tank is a bit bigger than your but i tihnk exactly the same sum pump this is to good

  • what is the difference's between a community fish and Semi Aggressive fish?

  • @1Rockyboxer1 community fish can live with others and Semi aggressive fish can live with other but caution must be taken.

  • @hmongster1000 1600gph pump

  • how many pounds of live rock do you have?

  • Very impressive - Thanks for sharing!

  • very impressive and helpfull nice tank

  • Thanks for making this video! Very helpful!

  • If the power goes off your home will not flood. Do you have to restart the syphon once the power comes back on or will it just start flowing by itself?

  • @abaneyone no its starts by its self

  • @mingoyai That's nice. I just decided to drill my tank for a 1 inch PVC overflow.

  • Thank you for showing is this. Excellent design!

  • how often do you do water changes is you have an algae filter

  • @electronkid710 ones a month

  • @mingoyai oh and how much water do you change because im thinking of doing 10 gallons every 2 weeks but if i can do 10 gallons every month that would be great

  • how many gph is your return pump because im setting up a sump and my friend just gave me 2 296 gph submersible pumps and the hight is 53 inches so that would reduce the flow to about 130 gph. and how do you match the flow of the overflow and the return pump

  • @electronkid710 you dont the overflow box is self adusting it will pump back what ever you pump in, thats the beauty of it.

  • to mingoyai , if you put a 1/4 inch tube glued into that hole and conect it to a air intake of a power head at the surface you can get it to self prime ,,, so in other words if your power fails your tank will start up on its own ,,, if you have any guestions feel free to ask

  • how to you keep the water clear without activated carbon. please respond because im new to all this stuff and im trying to find the cheapest filter solution and right now im thinking of a fluval 305 but im also interested in a sump

  • @techboy710 i recomend everyone to use an algae filter like the one i have, you dont need carbon for saltwater aquariums

  • @mingoyai i would argue that point, carbon is always helpful, but bio filters are very efficent as well.

  • @techboy710 look up tri carbon or myjestic reefs ,,, but i would advise more than just a fluval ,,,, and for get about cheapness ,,, get what can do the job ,

  • @techboy710 the bacteria colonizing on the large surface area of the bio media break down the amonia into nitrite then nitrate and the pre filter keeps large detritus out of the tank.

  • Can you please tell me how you matched the flow rate of the pump to the flow rate of the siphon?

  • How do you start the siphon from your overflow box to the sump? I have everything set up but can't start the siphon.

  • I still don't get what the alge is for, is it a replacement with the protien skimmer?

  • @TheFootball1987 the algae denitrefies and removes fish wastes , it also oxygenates the water ,,,

  • you sound like pedro

  • @ArizonaNmusic who is pedro?

  • @mingoyai just youtube "vote for pedro"

  • @mingoyai hes a character from napoleon dynamite ,,, hes kinda cool

  • It's very helpful. I tried to put U-tube into my tank but it doesn't fit because it is too narrow from my tank to the overflow box. So, I need to get some kind of wider tube that connects from inside of my tank to the overflow box. I saw the the gray wide tube in your video. Where can I get that? and also I have a major problem.. that is amount of water that flows from my tank to my sump and then to return my tank is different so I have water flow from my sump to my living room. Any suggestion?

  • @bochoi218 use a overflow box that will take care of your problem.

  • What kind of lighting system have you used here and how much is it....?how many lights are there...?

  • @roshan2946 i currently have 5 80watt t5 and 320watt of power compact

  • thats a very hard setup

  • @h1n1v1rus if you think is hard then you should not have one cuz the maintenace is a pain in the butt

  • Dude you need a lot more rock in that tank plus that pvc that you didn't glue one day will give you problems if it doesn't come out fine but the drip and salt will ruin your wood good luck oh and check valves are the best you should try them peace of mind when on vacation

  • @danbran67 check out my update on my youtube channel

  • @blackO3ss yes is true thats why when i moved i fixed it check out my updates i posted am sure you will like it.

  • Great video

But wy didn't you turn the sump around. It would have saved you a lot of tubbing + Because of the tubbing and sharp corners, the flow of return pomp is reduced. To maximize return flow i would turn the sump around and keep the return tube as short as posible with no sharp corners

    just a tip

    greetz

  • have you got any sea horses in or have you even had any ???

  • @fallenangel1624 sorry no sea horses they very hard to keep

  • thats was a great video, but wat do i need to make one..?

  • great vid. thanks.

  • For anyone who's still concerned on the pwrhds or wvmkrs it all depends on the livestock u r habiting, some like lots of movement in the water as tangs do or if you have a reef tank. There are fish such as the lion fish and box fish that wouldn't do well in tanks with a high waterflow

  • Good talk through on your design. Nice tank

  • Nice tank...good info

Can you use a sump on a freshwater tank

    Thanks

  • this is a great idea thanks :)

can i ask where your protien skimmer is thou ?

or am i just blind :P

  • @jestamon i did not have one at the time of the video, but check out my other videos and you will see it and alot more.

  • How big is your return pump?

  • @livexgreen it does not have a return pump , the return its by gravity

  • @mingoyai is it an anty-gravity pump, how does it get back up to the tank?

  • well put vid! great info!

  • @TheWarOrphan thanks

  • Dude! That was an eyeopener for me! THX SOOOO MUCH! I just go a lot of great ideas for my new aq, thx!

  • @Graverdrengen your welcome

  • with a sump do u need a filter? do u have a filter on top of ur main tank or in ur sump? how about powerheads with a sump do u need powerhead in ur main tank or in ur sump? im new to all this ;o lol

  • @charmanderzor no u dont need a filter, the sump is your filter and u need powerheads for the main tank only

  • you should of turned your sump around, your plumbing pipes wouldnt be crossed then :)

  • @SoundsFantastic check out my other videos, the tank was moved.

  • Nice Tank! And You should Get A backdorp it would look better and dont you need a Koralia Powerhead Or sumthing. And when Setting up a saltwater Tank Does anyone know if You need A Wavemaker Is it nessasary.

  • @lucarox123 wave makers are not nessesary.

  • so much algae

  • @flipblood i took care of the algae, check out my other videos

  • nice i might get a 125 gal if i can find one think you can send me a link

  • thanks that helped me a lot. is there anything i need to do to the overflow box in case of a power outage?

  • just make sure you test it.

  • The bio balls do nothing when there submergede like that

  • i removed the bio balls long time ago.

    but thanks for the tip

  • i did not mean for that to be as blunt as it was they may do a little but i like the fact that you have monster mounts of chaeto morf in there

  • Do i realy need a sump for a saltwater aquarium?

  • You need some sort of filtration, canister filter, sump etc etc.

  • @michaelmp5 if i dont have this what can happen to the fish

  • Is it a fish only or reef?

  • @michaelmp5 well my firend has a 10 galon tank and he wants to put like small fish that can live there and i know its small but yeah so do i need all those things

  • My friend you need to spend hours upon hours of reeding before you get into this hobby. Don't try to rush things as you will be dealing with animals lives here.

A good starting size is 30 gallon.

  • @michaelmp5 I feel dumb and i am doing some research well i actualy have like cichlids and other fish like i a 29 but like small ones

  • its both fish and reef, check update and tell what you think

  • you dont but its the best way to keep your tank healthy

  • Hows the agae help??

  • the algae works like a filter,

  • Good vid. get rid of you bio balls they will become a nitrate factory over time. Bioballs do not go to well with reef tanks

  • see my updated video, i removed the bio balls

  • what material isused in your tank is it only wood or made of iron

  • this all untreated pine wood and plywood.

  • @mingoyai at about 3:58 that clownfish is preparing to lay eggs

  • check out my updated video and tell what you think?

  • Ex vid mate, i wish i had seen it a month ago. check out my sump setup, its a new design but over all is very very similar to yours. Just shows great minds think alike. lol. good job.

  • bio balls are def cheaper going to setup a 55 gallon with type of setup going to go live rock and macalg though good job mingoyai

  • Bioballs? Really?

  • about how much did it cost initially to set it up, and how much are you paying per month? I have a 125 gallon tank at home that my dad took care of but after the divorce he left it to my mom and we want to start it back up again but have no idea what we're getting into

  • @SheSoTalented216

well i spend about 30 dollars in food and saltwater, if you have the tank and all accesories, you will need to buy the rock which goes for about 6 dollars a pound, you need sand, you will need about 300 dollars to begin.

  • The BEST and Most helpful point about this video was at 3:08 when you explained that you have to make a small hole in the exhaust to make sure that when the power goes out, it breaks the Siphon of the water flawing back! GREAT REMINDER/POINT! =)

  • @learnyourrhistory actually if you glue a 1/4 ridgid air tubling into this hole and attach that to a power head at the survice ,, you can get your tank to self start . but in this method you must keep the power head at the survice for it to break the syphon in the first place ,,, try it it works

  • was there a skimmer on your system?

  • @aussiemcgee

no not at the time of the video but check my updated video and you will see it.

  • Good explanation.

  • thanks, be sure to watch my update.

  • nice tank man can you tell me what type of lights you have

  • currently am useing 4 80w t5 and 320w of power compacts.

  • what type in this vid at the time

  • the name of the t5 are FISH NEED IT, the are some cheap brand that i dont recomend

  • oh what was wrong with them

  • very well done :)

  • thanks

  • and how does it clean the bottor of the tank if it only takes water from the top i just bought a 30 gallon sump thing

  • i have never cleaned my tanks bottom, i have hermit crabs and snails that take care of that. the bad chemmicals in the water will tend to be at the top that is the reason why the water gets a nasty film at the top.

  • this is a hobby for those with lots of time, patience, money, luck and space.

  • in my opinion it does not take to much time, once you have your tank in good condition you will not have to worry about it just dont forget to feed your fish. by the way i need to change my water its been 2 months.

  • If there is loss of power, how does the overflow start working again?

  • the syphon is never lots , so once you have power it will continue as normal

  • Did you make that syphon or did you buy it like that? That is the only piece I am having trouble with.

  • when you buy an overflow box it should come with it.

  • Do you need a sump for a saltwater tank? Or is it just recommended?

  • i have a sump but you can have a wet/dry system too

  • Excellent video my friend!

  • thank you

  • thanks a lot man! Now i know how a sump works :) -stashes money away for my 180+ gallon-

  • Best sump video on youtube. finally someone who explained it alot better then anyone else.

  • thanks any time

  • this is awesome i just have a 10 gallon freshwater tank

  • too cool man thanks a ton

  • Like the sump setup. quick question tho, Why have the addition of bio-balls when you have the algae and LR? Im setting up a compartment in my sump for a refugeum but i never used bio-balls b/c i've had LR and and skimmer (and a UV that is only on one day a week.

    Thanks!

  • the more beneficial bacteria, the cleaner the tank. better to overdo things than underdo them

  • Thanks. Awesome video. Very informative.

  • Looks good, however 80 bucks seems a bit steep for just an overflow box. Check out my vids for a self priming pvc overflow desgin that can be made with about 20 bucks worth of pvc and pvc cement.

  • I like your information, However, what about powerheads and wavemakers and stuff like that?

  • if i would have done that i would have probably dropped the camera

  • oh you mean the vermiculated angelfish, i got at my lfs it was about $20, but not a good idea they do do very well on tanks.

  • yes the vacum is maintain because the tubes never get exposed to air.

  • That's a pretty informative video. Thanks for posting.

  • no protien skimmer??.. good vid either way.. i'm going to make a 30 gal.. sump myself.. thanks for posting.. helpful stuff..

  • Comment removed

  • no thank you..very very clever way of setting up that sump tank. 5 star for your video and thanks for posting it. im just about to set up a sump tank and this vid will help me out. ty
