I think people should take this word as seriously as the N-word. I am of African decent, and my son has cerebral palsy. People should not only refrain from using an offensive word but need to change their mentality and the ways that we look at so called people with special needs because banning the word retarted to describe people may be temporary relief soon or later other words will take its place to mean the same unless we stop making these negative associations about people with disabilities.

I think people should take this word as seriously as the N-word. I am of African decent, and my son has cerebral palsy. When kids at school call him the R-word, I can tell he feels hurt, worthless, and like he's a less person. Which is how I personally feel when I am called the N-word. I think this is serious. Other African Americans may not think so, but perhaps you would if you had to walk on crutches your entire life and couldn't play sports or run with your friends, then people made fun.

@TheSoulJames I totally get you! my cousin is disabled and yet at school half his family members who are at school need to hear "that's so retarded" "you're a retard" etc is really hurtful for all of us! And of course there are even worse words... one which starts with "S" - Disgusting. Words like "nigger", "faggot", "retard" etc should not be said at all imo! Dehumanizes so many people! :(

@TheSoulJames I completely agree. The N word may not have the same meaning as the R word... but both words hurt people. I think we all need to be more careful with our words and make sure we do not make people feel like they have no worth. People are always worth something. There is always hope. And I wish more people would see that.

The "r" word should not be used at all. Joy is trying to say its part of the English vocabulary because it means to slow down. There are hundreds of synonyms for that sense of the word. It is a hurtful word. It is comparable to the "n" word. I have personally seen mentally handicapped individuals break down and cry because someone used the word retard. Its a bad word; its a hurtful word. Stop using it.

retard is like a swear. has part of your brain shut down is that better? my sister has mental retardation I would get slapped if I called her retard & i handed out many slaps protecting her, it is mean name calling I worked with mentally disabled i do not say that child is retarded yet has down syndrome or is autistic, OK if a child is fat do to meds should senators saying "his wallet is fat" or " your a fat head", bother me? arguing words is all they are doing. we all use bad words. the time it is wrong a sin is when you are calling a mentally challenged person the name. before the term retardation they used dummy stupid idiot to describe conditions so i suppose those words are off the table as well how about crazy which described mental illness it is not OK to use name calling in heated arguments but i believe we all have done so. but most likely none of us would walk up to a mentally handicapped child & say you are a retard or to the depressed & say hello crazy.
