  • It bothers me that Whoopie said that "retard" isn't the same as the n-word. It IS the same.

  • You know...Whoopi should be the last one to talk considering her outrageously offensive stand up skits in the past. And this is coming from someone that likes her.

And thanks, but no thanks. I have free speech. Proud to be an American! This is congruent to books being banned in past times. Just not right.

  • Can someone please tell me why Hasselbeck is still on this show?

  • Barack could say hang whites and Sherri and Whoppi would find a way round it - thats the difference they can see no wrong in Barack and thats as dangerous as how Elizabeth thinks Bush can do no wrong - wake up America

  • This panel is the most hypocritical lot of women ever! If this was a conservative who said this, Joy and Sherri would have been screaming for his head on a stick. But because it was Obama, we should just accept his apology, it was in private so it doesn't really matter. We should be focusing on the way it's used in society and blah, blah, blah. Elisabeth was right. How you speak and the language you use when you think no one "important" is listening means more than anything.

  • "She should not have compared it to the N-word"....? Why not? Both are offensive regardless of the intent. When I was a kid it was slang to say, "We N-bomb-rigged it" in place of "Jury rigged it" when fixing something in a make shift manner on the farm. There was no mal intent. YET IT WAS AND IS WRONG!!! Same goes for the r-word.

  • This word and the N word is a hurt full word!

  • Why does Whoopi say it shouldn't be compared to the N word? She doesn't have an intellectual disability, so she doesn't know how it feels to be called the R word. It's the exact same thing. And they say "it's a word that means something else," but the N word was the same way. Neither should be used, EVER.

  • Elizabeth has only one opinion - republications yay, democrats no

If a democrat does something bad, she slams it. If a republican does something bad, she defends it. She gives no independent thought to anything.

  • @pomegranateish I do know what you're saying, but if you'll notice, the others are the same way about their views. They seem to imply if a democrat does it, maybe it's not so bad, maybe it's because everyone does it (on TV, movies, etc.). No. I don't care who does it, democrat or republican, it's not right.

  • did Barbara Walters just say about n word that we no longer use it? she obviously has never been on the internet LOL.

and good job for Whoopi thinking of the BIGGER picture rather than just blaming stupid politicians or something, who cares, it's a social thing not just political slip ups.

by the way, we're having the same problem with the word "gay", it's being used way out of context. American modern day language is being really screwed up... words being tossed away like nothing.. sigh..

  • 'Retar' means slow, but retard/retarded has an ugly past. Before the special olymics, ppl with intellectual dissablilities were never seen in the public eye, they were hidden in basements or in institutes and parents who had a child with dissability didn't know anything, and doctors would actually advise them to keep there child hidden or put away 'cause ppl were afraid of them. We've come so far since then and that word was and still is used many times to discriminate ppl with ID.

  • Excuse me, you DEFINITELY CAN compare the "R" word to the "N" word! There is not much difference between the two. They are both a disgusting insult to people who can not help being called it for circumstances they can't control!!! And it was only the two African-Americans on this show that objected to it being in the same category... Well it would be a different story if someone who has a disability was sitting down at that table! I'm sorry, but they were totally WRONG on that part!!!!

  • GOD! ELIZABETH IS ANNOYING!

  • so Obama ditched on the special Olympics niff the athletes in the special Olympics are way stronger and faster then him. man what has this country come to having a president like that!. grrrrr

  • i am wheelchare peaple have cell me R-word a lot in Taft High school at 2001-2002

and i am proud to be Special Olympics Lincoln County......

  • @otto12354 Good for you, otto! I bet you're really great in the Olympics :D!

  • "Who are you to be when the camera is not rolling." That is how i feel about the media. Like don't make a case about words like N words and R words or saying gay when you know damn well you said it to all the actors politicians and the view cast. I choose not to say those word cause i was raise to never use slang.

  • The crazy thing for me is my cousin is mentally retarded and he lives with me and yet he calls me retarded when i do something stupid and hits and I cant do anything to him back and he's my age, 23. And i think its weird how they jokingly with his friends call each other slow and stuff.

  • All of has heard this hated word. Use in a very derogatory, hateful and hurtful way is not only ignorant but it's mean and sadistic! Whenever you have a mental handicap or not, you or your loved ones are being insulted by that word because of a specific class by ignorant people. If I was at work and if my coworkers or employer calls me that, I stop working and report it to human resource! I don't ever want that word spoken in my presence! Period.

  • @dog453679 But retarded people do not disagree that the way they are is just as good as not being retarded, right? Retard is used as a derrogatory word for the same reasons that fag, loser, moron are used - because these words are objectively bad things for a person to be, relative to the average. For the same reason, words like legend, stud, angel, etc are used for appreciation of a persons value because these things are objectively good things for someone to be.

  • I think we should ask some so-called "retarded" people what THEY think.

    That's fair! :)

  • @SpottyDog You mean retarded people aren't actually retarded? That makes no sense. Retarded people, that is to say, person with mental or physical retardation, do exist. And it is bad to be retarded, and no retard would choose to remain so (providing he was not so retarded as to be unable to judge merit) if he were given the choice. By attempting to equalise the value of a retard and non-retard, you hamper societies desire to fix retardation, via medicine, liberal eugenics etc. Not good.

  • @tothemax01 Absolutely not true. You are not "hampering societies desire to fix retardation" you are giving dignity to people who, most often, are not able to fight for it themselves!

  • @tothemax01 Actually, I knew a child who had cerebral palsy with an intellectual disability (what used to be called "retarded") and his teacher posed a question to the class (a regular ed class), asking what you would change about yourself if you could. When his helper asked him so she could write his answer, he said "Nothing." She asked, are you sure? And he said "No. God made me this way for a reason and I love who I am." It's like assuming black people would've chosen to be white in 1960.

  • The thing is, saying "retarded" as a casual part of our speech is just the evolution of language. "Idiot" used to be the word for "mentally challenged" in the olden days, until it became a synonym for stupid. In the future, "retarded" will become a regular word for "stupid" until a new word comes in to replace retarded like "mentally handicapped" or something.

  • @pescilinirosso That's true, but the term now is "a person with an intellectual disability"...the previous terms had all called the person a name (idiot, retarded, mentally challenged), whereas now, the phrasing still has them being a person, they just happen to have a disability. You don't say "cancerous Jean" when describing a woman with cancer. You say Jean "HAS" cancer. Same w/ an intellectual disability. Person first. Hope that clears it up! :)

  • Anyone who thinks that retard, faggot and nigger are NOT the same are wrong! ALL of these words were designed to hurt a specific group of people and it is wrong-PERIOD! We are all brothers and sister and need to be more mindful of others feelings!

  • elizabeth is against obama cuz the dude sayd special olympics.....but supported bush thru all the shit....

  • I agree with Joy.

  • oh please Elisabeth! if a republican said it you wouldn't hear a peep out of her

  • Usually when people do say the word retard it has absolutely nothing with breaking down people with disabilities.

I don't hate the word, I use it all the time; not going to lie.

    Political correctness needs to stop.

  • I hate the r-word, but I don't think it should be banned because it's a violation of the 1st Amendment and then we'd have to ban words like the n-word, cracker, honkey etc., but I do think people should at the very least try not to use the r-word.

  • WHOOPIE.... say that about the "N" word and see a different opinion

  • whats crazy is that i remember seeing this and not hearing the word the were talking about because i didn't catch the start of the convo so i assumed the word was stupid instead of retard and i basically was right

  • Honeybee, you obviously do not have a special needs child who gets hurt by this word.

Do you have that same feeling over the "n" word? It's just a word and people should get over it?

    Argh you tick me off!!!!

  • It's not just a word. If you think it is, you have no personal experience with an individual with an intellectual disability. It is a derogatory term, and to a in individual with an intellectual disability or to a family of the individual, it is comparable to the "N" word. It is hurtful to them just like the "N" word is hurtful to an African American.

  • The R word is hurtful, it is degrading and is used to make someone feel less than.

STOP using the word. Even the medical and educational industries have stopped using this word.

  • Whoopie you are WRONG! The R word is just as bad as the N word...They are both used to degrade and demean a certain type of person. VERY RARELY are either used in a positive way.

I AM the mother of a son with Autism.

He UNDERSTANDS when he is being put down, made fun of, ridiculed.

The R word is said to make another person feel less than...Just like the N word!

You don't GET IT Whoppie because you haven't walked a mile in our shoes!

  • In America today you can not ban words. You can only educate and change a culture. That said if someone in congress used the N-word Whoopi would want them fired yesterday. Guess since she is not mentally challanged she can not understand how other people feel.

  • I agree with Joy. The definition: Retardation is the act or result of delaying; the extent to which anything is retarded or delayed; that which retards or delays.

It's just a word. Get over it.

  • A lot of people think "retard" is just a word meaning slow. Well, the n-word was just a word too and by definition is originally a descendant of the Latin adjective niger, meaning the color "black." HOWEVER, it is NOW used as a hateful word against a race. The word "retard" is used against a group of people in a hateful way as well. Both are derogatory against things that people are born with and cannot help. They should BOTH be treated with contempt for the people that they hurt.

  • @honeybee3383 truth. Words are given meaning by people. People are flawed, therefor the words and subsequent meanings are flawed.

  • @honeybee3383 ight but ppl who are are mentally retarded are retarded so like ppl say past is the past theres alot of words that means something but is used for something else so since nigger means black so its ok to call my mom and teacher that

  • Whoopi Goldberg is to intelligent for this show. Elisabeth Hasselbeck needs to be fired because she lacks the capability to think beyond her republican party views.

  • @corinaldi And you lack the capability to use proper grammar. Whoopi is too intelligent for this show. Too, with two o's.

  • @corinaldi I agree with Whoopi most of the time and really do agree she's a very intelligent woman. On the other hand, I disagree with Elizabeth almost 95% of the time as her extreme conservative views and blind support for Sarah Palin and George Bush really pisses me off. BUT she made the show more interesting. I mean let's face it. The group's discussion got heated up we could thank Elizabeth for that. Her views actually representaive many converstative people out there like her. She's an asset

  • @corinaldi whoopi goldberg left while it was airing just because ssomeone wouldn't agree with her

  • @corinaldi EXACTLY IF THEY WANT SOMEONE THAT SHARES ELISABETH'S POINT OF VIEW AT LEAST HIRE ANOTHER CELEBRITY WITH A BRAIN - THERE ARE PLENTY TO CHOOSE FROM EVEN THOUGH BOTH PARTY'S ARE FULL OF SHIT

  • I'm going to say cry more. You want to be treated as equal, then you have to roll with insults just like everyone else.

  • @MrLawrenceV ..Your an idiot ...nothing more , nothing less.. just an idiot

  • Just what? Idiot is a technical term for a degree of retardation. So is imbecile and moron. You can't ban words.

  • I disagree with "banning" words. Especially when it comes to the context you're using it in. Instead we should discourage people from referring people with developmental disabilities as retards. And yes, I said the dreaded R word. To referred as someone who's mentally delayed as a retard is no different than calling a black person a Nigger or calling a homosexual as a faggot. You see, how I used these words for example? I did not use them in a derogatory sense.

  • Yes, and homosexuals and black people are offended by these words, which makes them derogatory . do you know what that word means? hi, you don't make sense.

  • Banning words sounds tantamount to something that a totalitarian society would do. I refuse to relinquish my 1st Amendment rights.

  • @Justinfhtube so why are u defending the word retard to just use it in a sentence not calling anyone that if they are going to bann it it should just be ban to not call someone that

  • it's not about banning a word, it's about changing the people and how they use it. and that's hard. banning a word won't do shit.

  • I have to say banning the word is the half of the work. People should not only refrain from using an offensive word but need to change their mentality and the ways that we look at so called people with special needs because banning the word retarted to describe people may be temporary relief soon or later other words will take its place to mean the same unless we stop making these negative associations about people with disabilities.

  • @fionamcampbell yo ppl use the word if someone did something stupid if someing is not right like failing a test for sneezing so its not fair cause ur saying retard means not right or dumb

  • WOW Whoopi! She said it perfectly the issue should not be who said it and why they said it, but that people say it and think that it's ok. It's just like Gay as a word, its not ok!

  • Joy Behar is a twit..let's put that out there. At least Whoopi was putting out good points. No one should use the r-word as a deragatory term.

  • I think people should take this word as seriously as the N-word. I am of African decent, and my son has cerebral palsy. When kids at school call him the R-word, I can tell he feels hurt, worthless, and like he's a less person. Which is how I personally feel when I am called the N-word. I think this is serious. Other African Americans may not think so, but perhaps you would if you had to walk on crutches your entire life and couldn't play sports or run with your friends, then people made fun.

  • @TheSoulJames I totally get you! my cousin is disabled and yet at school half his family members who are at school need to hear "that's so retarded" "you're a retard" etc is really hurtful for all of us! And of course there are even worse words... one which starts with "S" - Disgusting. Words like "nigger", "faggot", "retard" etc should not be said at all imo! Dehumanizes so many people! :(

  • @TheSoulJames I completely agree. The N word may not have the same meaning as the R word... but both words hurt people. I think we all need to be more careful with our words and make sure we do not make people feel like they have no worth. People are always worth something. There is always hope. And I wish more people would see that.

  • @TheSoulJames Best comment on youtube!

  • The "r" word should not be used at all. Joy is trying to say its part of the English vocabulary because it means to slow down. There are hundreds of synonyms for that sense of the word. It is a hurtful word. It is comparable to the "n" word. I have personally seen mentally handicapped individuals break down and cry because someone used the word retard. Its a bad word; its a hurtful word. Stop using it.

  • sorry but it is idiotic to say you can't equate it to the use of the N-word. It is the same. It is ugly and hurtful. Sheesh! Those broads are idiots.

  • retard is like a swear. has part of your brain shut down is that better? my sister has mental retardation I would get slapped if I called her retard & i handed out many slaps protecting her, it is mean name calling I worked with mentally disabled i do not say that child is retarded yet has down syndrome or is autistic, OK if a child is fat do to meds should senators saying "his wallet is fat" or " your a fat head", bother me? arguing words is all they are doing. we all use bad words. I do!

  • the time it is wrong a sin is when you are calling a mentally challenged person the name. before the term retardation they used dummy stupid idiot to describe conditions so i suppose those words are off the table as well how about crazy which described mental illness it is not OK to use name calling in heated arguments but i believe we all have done so. but most likely none of us would walk up to a mentally handicapped child & say you are a retard or to the depressed & say hello crazy.

  • Go Whoopi! Add some common sense to the table. Anybody who uses the word "retard" in any context other than "to make slow" just shows general lack of vocabulary.
