  • for a moment, i thought i was reading Mr. Backspin :P

  • asd]

  • what ever all the ppl saying its illegal, he can easily beat u all without serving or just doing the most simple serve

  • Ma Lin is one of the best players in the world and a fair sportsman too !

It´s very easy for him to accomodate any serve to actual ITTF rules . In competitions the referees watch exactly the serves and have to decide according to the rules what´s yet allowed and what´s forbidden. It´s a nice demonstration of old school tricks too !

  • Ma Lin in his younger days! Now he's balding :<

  • the best serve

  • damn the rules have changed a lot!

  • Ma Lin's backspin serves are perfect.

  • The ittf is full of girly board members. They take away the best part about tt, the suprise attack serve, the hidden serve etc. Games like these are suppose to mimmic real war. With so much change in the rules, I don't think I can ever give waldner and the Swedish team the same respect as I give the Chinese. They al played by different rules.

  • Pingpongballs get easily destroyed, go out and blow up stuff instead :D

  • THAT IS ILLEGAL DONT FOLLOW... if never hide can

  • @mrchancheewai Isn't Singapore an English speaking country...

  • @txkyle2013 nope its not, i think??

i think they have they own language ^^

  • @carlodxtreme Nah my friend moved there most of em speak English.

  • god-like :D

  • I want a new Ma Lin video!!!

  • yeah but also very illegal...except in the 90's

  • Because the video was made in the 90's. Can you not tell? Let your idea to through your brain before spiting it out might not be a bad thing...

  • thats a very good serve

  • not very clear la

  • very tricky and prolly very hard to counter

  • these vids remind me of the dharma videos from LOST

  • lol

  • that was not a illegal sever

  • Every body knows thats fake you fucker.....Its how you wrap your tounge

  • scheise man so scheise

  • schnauze

  • du bist scheiße

  • forbidden zzz

  • i can do that..

    xD

  • Watch my videos...Comment! (nicely) ahah

  • man... you really gotta be up on the table to return that

  • look at the 38 mm ball go.

  • I'm new to the game, and I have a bunch of 38mm balls that i got for cheap. I love the way they spin.

  • didnt they lk ban the 38 mm for olympics n make it a 40?

  • No, it doesn't. The reason this serve is illegal is because he is hiding the motion with his left arm.

  • it used to be allowed you fag

  • I'm replying to this comment you moron:

"ball has to bounce past the end of the table "

That's not a rule and has never been.

  • @imzadim Again correct!

  • @imzadim that's what 810InK means, the way he's doing the serve is illegal nowadays. The best server back when this was permitted is Waldner, though!

  • @MDeatherage1988 No it doesnt... -_-

If you've never played then dont say anything

  • Why was this kind of serve made illegal?

  • Because This Ball Will Bounce Back And There were complains...

  • omfg...now ma lin looks much more stronger and incredibly fit!! just compare to more recent videos!!

  • the ping pong is game biutifole

  • I like how like everyone of the service videos i have seen and someone says "you cant hide the serve that is illegal." You do realize during the making of this video...it was legal. Here is a good hint on the age of this video, when have you seen Ma Lin with that much hair?

  • I`m a new fan of table tennis I was wondering if you could tell me which service was thought to be illegal by viewer and was once legal and is now illegal, also would you mind explaining why that service is no longer illegal. I would very much appreciated it, thanks in advance.

  • you can't hide the ball while serving anymore with your arms.

  • oh i see, that was very smooth, his forearm was blocking it!!

  • Hiding the path of the ball during the toss. It isnt legal anymore. During the making of it, hiding the ball was legal. The rules changed and I am not sure why that happened. It did give the players advantages though. The spin was unclear due to the contact point of the ball. You couldnt see that contact so who knows what came. Either way, look at the rules of table tennis. It is open palm and toss so many centimeters up etc.

  • thank you very much!!

  • they made that rule so that the rallies will be longer instead of just serve and attack

they wanted the rallies to be longer to be more interesting to the audience

  • Yes it can...

If it hits twice, it's your point.

  • I know... I didn't know by then, I was learning to play :P Well, I'm still learning, but I have 3 months experience --better than nothing-- :P

  • Your rule?

  • ok that message is old, look at my latest one...

  • There are so many good ping pong clips on youtube. It's a good sport to play for whole life. I started when I was 12 and 46 years later I still enjoy it. Wish you good!

  • I love it... I started playing it at work and have been playing almost every day for like 7 months... Of course I'm among the top 5 players in the office, but I couldn't compete against your +40 years of experience :P

  • mm nice

  • very good Serve

    thanks

  • amazing!

  • its an illegal serve now.. You can't hide the serve.

  • Yea, moving your arm back a little bit...HUGE difference to the serve (that's sarcasm). I wonder how many more people are going to say something that should be obvious?

  • @810InK That is absolutely correct. However it is something that can be corrected.

  • @810InK actually ur are wrong and right

the vid shows two serves, one that is clear and one that is unclear. the unclear one is illegal, but the clear is perfectly legal

  • u hide the serve by throwing it when its under the table not by it falling behind ur arm

  • @DapSparks

the ball cannot be obscured at any time during the service, and throwing it from beneath the table is illegal.

  • and you apply it on the rubber? won't it ruin the quality of the rubber? i mean if it's as stiff as you're talking it would ruin it.. it won't get any spin done lol. unless it's one of those mariable glue. that can still catch something without being frozen stiff... anyways thanks for the tip :) i don't use these things hehe my butterfly bryce is more than effective

  • hes joking

  • nice

  • 違反サーブじゃん

  • thats crazy is there a difference between the red and black side of paddle

  • it´s individual, I use for the forhand a "Tibhar Nimbus" and for the backhand a "Donic Quattro Formula"

  • Old vid from before rules changed (also is that still a 38mm ball?) but it's always good to watch the pros, amazing spin on those serves.

  • yea its 38mm. theres no way a 40mm could spin that violently.

  • probably could. just put some gorilla glue to your rubber and wait till it's half dry. make sure not to show the judge during the match.

  • gorilla glue? heheh what the heck is that? is that something illegal? lol usually i use tibhar glue or such..

  • awesome serve but the problem comes from "hiding" the ball (as stated in previous comments) and the fact that he did not withdraw his freehand from the play area

  • Wow that's tricky, making it look like he's going to use the black side but then hitting it with the red side.

  • i can do that shakehand easy

  • Anyway you doesn't may serve under your arms?? Isn't that a rule or something?

  • Yes, that's true. It's not allowed to serve under your arms.

  • the hell can anyone hope to return that serve... and yet most of the pro's manage to...

  • of course there is a way to return that serve. but for "usual mortals" as us it will be very likely impossible to return it constantly ;)

  • How the hell does he get so much spin!????? It looks as if he quickly chops it but ive tried that but no way getting that kind of spin... it mush be his rubber he is using.

  • The trick to getting chop from a high toss serve is to keep your paddle as horizontal as possible and at impact, the ball should impact at the back end of the paddle. Otherwise the gravity makes the ball roll forward and you end up with a slight top spin or a dead serve even with a chopping motion.

  • Thanks dude....... i think most of mine have been dead balls.... its hard to master it... now i think ive practiced the wrong technique ..

  • is a speed serve with back spin and side spin good? I executed it and it usually just goes striaght into the net on their side xD

  • DOes anyone know where i can get a cheap blade, ruber and glue in Australia THNX

  • order from zeropong(dot)com

they have really cheap but amazing quality blades and rubber. anywhere from rec quality to pro quality gear

  • Ma Lin is increadibly insane!

  • can someone tell me how he does these serves??

  • remember don't use ur arm only, u must combine various power from your twist of the body, your wrist and your hand, etc. just go with the flow, even though i'm a bit vague.

  • do you have a good site you can recommend?

  • His backspin serve had unbelievable spin.I honestly think the ball would have stayed on the table after it reached the other side of the table. That gives you an idea of how much BACKSPIN is on that serve.

  • I want to laern the ways of ping pong

  • That is amazing!!! Look at the spin of the ball!!!

  • Remember THIS! This was taken before the rules changes. Sucka!

  • Shame those serves are illegal. Firstly you cannot hide the ball from your opponent which he does.

"From the start of service until it is struck, the ball shall be above the level of the playing surface and behind the server's end line, and it shall not be hidden from the receiver by the server or his doubles partner and by anything they wear or carry."

Also the ball must be struck BEHIND" the baseline and he clearly hits it over it.

  • True he is over the base line, but if you look at real footage of Ma Lin in tournaments, he follows all the rules while still being able to execute this serve.

  • well he performed the serv before the rule of ''not hiding the ball''

  • Positive...

    With less table tennis lingo:

The serve that Ma Lin is performing in this video would be amazingly difficult to return, much less without getting destroyed by his following shot.

  • Everytime I see the national team vids i'm blown away. The sheer magnitude on Ma's backspin serves is ridiculous. You have to walk away from this vid with much more respect for the amount of touch it takes for his opponents to push the returns short enough to prevent his third ball.

  • are you saying something negative or positive?
