Lincoln knew that to abolish slavery at a stroke would mean hundreds of thousands of people wandering about with no means of support...he was a realist but was criticised for his stance....he wanted it to peter out over a number of years as he believed this was the best course of action for the majority.....I must read up on the Confederate surrender and the immediate aftermath . I hated history at school but this is fascinating....the actual birth of a nation.

The country tearing itself apart. The ground there was literally soaked in blood. Think about what he says, and maybe someday you will get it. Lincoln was an 1860's tea party member. He looked up to Washington and Jefferson and Adams as a kid, and they of course were not liberals. Lincoln fought in a war that a LIBERAL would be against. I am struck by the fact that a self educated man wrote and spoke these words 146 years ago, and yet current politicians who claim every accolade of the ivy league seem to have no concept of the honor and sacrifice required to keep this nation free.
