when it comes to movie musicals, i like voices with character - they don't have to be perfect and clear. that's why i love helena in this. she doesn't have a "professional voice" but she manages to hit all the notes when it comes to the character she plays - not exactly the music. and "by the sea" has one of the most charming singing moments i've heard in my life when she sings:

I for one HATE the generic pop singer voice when it comes to musicals. (sounds like we agree on that haha) I think its fine for Disney channel and sure they are talented but keep em out of theatre please.

However I think Angela Lansbury will always be Mrs. Lovett to me. Helena is very head voice and airy while Angela is much more chest voice and a bit raspy but shes a legend.

I think our disagreement makes more sense now. :)

No , I didn't mean chest voice, she doesn't use chest voice either. But yes, she isn't a singer. When you use chest voice, you resonate in the chest. She mostly relies on the normal larynx sound, without much support in the diaphragm, and if she had used head voice, the tone would have been stronger too. Opera singers use both head and chest voice to produce the same powerful tone. Check out Cecila Bartoli, she can switch between the two like nothing :)
