  • I'm sold; didn't realize you could run a DAW in the guest machine so effectively.

If the poster is still out there, how many cores are you running?

  • @MrZardoz777 He doesn't appear to be replying. Tell me how many cores you have and I will tell you how well it will run. (pretty much if you have something like a core 2 duo then you will be fine)

  • Xen Hypervisor would be a much better choice for the host platform, mainly for the vga passthrough. Only con for xen is you have to compile from source if you want a decent version, which is not really that big of a deal. Vmware is a joke, you're only paying 189 dollars for what? a pretty little GUI and about half the functionality compared to other VM managers? Another prime example of how popular technology beats better technology every time, sad.

  • VMWare Workstation OR Virtualbox? What should I use?

  • @DimitrisMPapadakis Probably VMWare...

  • Hi can someone tell me how I can do this so I can run Quark!! (It does not work through WINE). I own a legal copy. I just can't switch to Linux because I MUST use this program for work, so I'm stuck with windows. HOW CAN I DO THIS VIRTUALIZATION AND HAVE WINDOWS RUN AS A DESKTOP WITHIN MY LINUX?

I HAVE LINUX UBUNTU 10.04 (WILL NOT GO UP TO 10.10 OR 11.04)

  • You-buntu?

    Bet-ah?

    :[

  • @mendozairis

and also, windows is based on unix (im not sure how directly but mac is also along the line to windows)

  • I believe that Debian is much more stable than ubuntu, in spite of the fact that it's not updated as often as ubuntu and uses older soft packages.

  • what about hardware virtualization? if i had an NVIDIA VGC can my virtual machine run games with no lag?

in that case, I think ubuntu can't do something about that...

  • LOL YouBontu.. what is that?

  • And VMWare workstation is not free.

  • no fuckin way im from barrie

  • how much ram does that computer have?

  • Im going to try again to switch from windows to ubuntu. I will run windows xp and mac os x snow leopard in virtual machines. I hope my plan runs well with these specs:

Intel core 2 quad q6600 Processor

    4GB DDR2 Ram

    Nvidia 8800GTX 768MB Video Card

    2x500GB HDD's

Ralink RT73 wifi. (Ethernet on my MOBO is broken. :[ )

    Asus P5n-e SLI Motherboard

Ubuntu 10.04 x86 on one HDD and Windows Vista Home premium x64 on the other

  • 183 people are DUMBASSES

  • well when I get a linux then can I use vst instruments like refx nexus as well ?

  • I'm considering trying this out. Just curious as to how well it handles windows gaming. Anyone with first hand experience on that?

  • @JaysonSR vmware fuzion works with linux since mac and linux are unix based

slide in you windows disk onto linux os cpu then play games on it its gonna look like a window on linux with windows w/e and you play the game in their

    or just get boot camp

  • @jrmdhdc Yeah I understand the process of making virtualization work. I just want to find a method that allows high end applications to run efficiently. Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 proved to work for office type stuff but most video intensive software suffered under this environment.

  • @JaysonSR like i said boot camp

    or vmwarefusion :D

  • You still need a licensed copy of Windows - so why not just cut out the middle man and dual boot instead. Sure you can use virtualization, and apps like Wine, etc but it's just a lot of extra effort. If you are going to use Windows anyway to play games, etc just use it (a lot of USB/FireWire audio interfaces don't work when used in a virtual machine nor do they have Linux drivers). If you want to watch porn and not worry about viruses then boot into Ubuntu.

  • @Criizar10 I'm sorry mate but you are wrong everything is working just you do not know how to configure it. I use my USB devices without any problems. I have access to all my virtual machines from outside of my PC (my PC is transparent ) just some bridging and iptables and all works just fine.

  • would this run counter strike source properly,i meen installed in windows xp within ubuntu, cause currently the rendering is very bad and its not enjoyable to play c.s.s on ubuntu 10.04 with wine 1.3.5. thanks.

  • Games and many great professional apps only run on windows or mac. And proprietary graphics drivers are a pain to install on linux, so unless you're sitting on old hardware, you can't use compiz or even basic visual effects. I love linux still though, and would use it exclusively if these issues were resolved. The future is linux.

  • @h3Xh3Xh3X Proprietary graphics take less than a minute to install on any distro, it's pretty fucking simple. And yes, even new hardware. ATi and NVidia actively release drivers for Linux that work perfectly for their state-of-the-art GPUs, so shut the hell up :)

  • @MrLucron No need to flame. We all know the proprietary binary drivers are crap, leave watermarks, and that an open solution would be much more viable. I've had ubuntu on three different machines and none have managed to have even basic desktop effects enabled. I'm not hating, I'm just stating fact from experience. Maybe you should come over and install them for me if it's so simple. :)

  • @h3Xh3Xh3X What watermarks?

  • @iNinjaLike : The FGLRX Unsupported Hardware watermark. Google it.

  • @h3Xh3Xh3X I Googled it. All the posts said it was fixed with the updated driver.

  • @h3Xh3Xh3X as I said earlier it just works. Come on mate my friend who has no idea about linux/ubuntu started to use that when he saw how it works on my laptop and after two weeks of working on it he just love it. All 3D gizmos/ compiz all works perfectly :)

  • @kpwlek With Maverick it works out of the box, which is pretty awesome. Before installing 10.10 however, it didn't work no matter what I tried. You can't convince me it "just works" if I have the experience that it "just doesn't work". You have to understand that your personal experience may differ from mine.

  • 8. Combine Compiz Fusion and CairoDock and you suddenly have a much more friendly interface, intended for multimedia and visual effects.

    9. If you get tired of Gnome, which follows the Ubuntu distro, you can just add KDE or any other UI and it'll feel almost like an all new installation.

    10. You won't run out of space to do whatever you wanna do on the screen because you can switch desktops and move windows between those.

For multimedia i would recon ArtistX for nr 7, it's stuffed big time^^

  • More to add, Ubuntu is almost entirely based on Debian, which again have loads of support for allmost all possible system arcitectures.

    6. The most skinnable OS to date, neither Mac OS X or Windows have a better offer and it's all free.

    7. A growing number of proprietary desktop applications are also supported on Linux

In the field of animation and visual effects, most high end software, such as AutoDesk Maya, Softimage XSI and Apple Shake, is available for Linux, Windows and/or Mac OS X

  • i tried vmware workstation on both win7 and ubuntu 10.04 and virtualization in ubuntu is like 2x faster :D

  • What type of video card are you using?

  • it's not u-bun-too, its ooh-boon-too. ok???

  • @computertechdude1234 actually its pronounced u-buntah

  • @toranamunter Thanks for telling me.

  • Learn how to pronounce the OS please... the fact that you're an american does not mean you have to be ignorant

  • file system efficiency and virtual non maintenance babysitting by the end user constantly from the open source community but I guess all that they really give a shit about is just making the allmighty dollar and screwing the end user as much as possible in the end. You would think Microsoft would have learned when it comes to that especially after all of the years gone by and versions of Windows that they have worked on. Amazing.

  • Franklin agreed , me too, and now I have made the switch permanently, I wont be going back to Windows at least for the long term forseeable future, I can do just about everything in Ubuntu now with it all setup that I could in Windows anyway, and like I said, alot less hassle in many aspects. Defragging used to annoy the shit out of me. You would think a Multi billion dollar company that pumps out millions of copies of a commercially licensed Operating System would take a lesson in

  • have to agree with you guys, and man I have to say, after having used Windows NT, 2000 & XP for a long time, one really nice thing is that not only can I raun alot of the programs anyway in Wine once it is configured and they even run better than they do in Windows which is fuckin amazing but there is virtually no need to worry about defragging and screwing around with antivirus, spyware etc, Linux just fucking works and it is functional as hell if you spend time playing with it

  • for me.. all this effects are unecessary. I like to customize my systems (windows and linux) too look the most 'oldschool' as possible.

but I'm very interested in this trick of holding the meta key and scrolling the mouse to do zome zoom (I'm a 'weak eyed'). how do I set this? (I'm a K-Ubuntu user)

  • Seriously, would be nice to know some of your specs? how you have this configured?

  • Watch this video to see how you can start making beats today and get FL Studio for free! - /watch?v=Wmne-KCyNYA

  • yes like Nio when he wakeup from Matrix and so the reality for first time

  • what are your specs?

  • @taluzoid I dont know what he has for specs, but you can do everything he's doing on a pentium 4 at 2.4 GHZ with a fairly decent 3d graphics card and still have enough recources to run windows vista :)

  • @taluzoid I dont know what he has for specs, but you can do everything he's doing on a Pentium 4 @ 2.4 (or an AMD equivalent) with 1.5GB of RAM and a fairy decent GPU and still have enough resources to run windows vista.

  • I've never been a pronunciation cop...and to each his own...but more people would understand what you are talking about and probably be more likely to follow you, if you said "OOHBOONTOO Feisty BAY-tah".

  • How about virtualizing for gaming? D: Heard it's no good. What do you ppl say?

  • @AndrewShadows

Modern Warfare 1 and 2 both work in Linux using WINE. So does world of warcraft, there's plenty more.

  • @h1ll37 I know, but the issue here is not "being able to play the game", it's actually "being able to play it at full graphical capabilities". I've compared one game so far, running it both in Windows and Linux (the game is Heroes of Newerth) and it runs much smoother in Windows. ): Which is sad.

  • @AndrewShadows

I play Call of Duty 4... runs awesomely. From what I've heard, people say their games tend to run better in WINE then on Windows,

  • @h1ll37 Oh well, maybe it's just this game I've tested then. I should try more.

  • You-bun-two?! Come on... it's a nice demo, but pronounce it right.

  • @meganrichard I know!! and also beta and "beh-tuh"... *facial tic*

  • Mac is based on Darwin which is based on Unix.

Linux is based on Unix as well. So, they're like brothers.

Although Linux wins on compatibility and it's free.

You also get so much out of a 600MB distro.

Mac has a 4+ GB installer but I feel so cramped up using it.

This comment was typed using Ubuntu. :)

  • @mendozairis I like to think of Mac as Linux's retarded cousin more then it's brother.

  • @meganrichard I think exactly the same. MAC Commercial-bullshit distrib of UNIX

  • hello code lyoko fixy

  • How do i make my new Porsche look like my grand-dads Volvo 740?

  • Haha, of course you meant how to make win look like linux.

  • question, i havent tried, if you have say, a controller that is connected via usb, could it be directed to that virtual drive?

  • DO A BERYL ROLL!

  • Hey could someone help me out i know how to burn data dvd and cd's and stuff liek that but i cannot find anythign on the ubuntu forums giving good advice on how to burn video dvd's that will play and a normal home dvd player can soemone help me out

  • data cds and dvds can be burnt from the ubuntu desktop using nautilus. just insert blank media in your burner. For burning video dvds try brasero. It should be installed by default.

  • thanks but if u read what i wrote i said i know how to do that i need to know how to burn video dvd's

  • Linux is good but the desktop is seriously lacking. BeOS/Haiku is better in that department.

But what about Xen, KVM, Qemu or VirtualBox?

  • I'm right there with you, Franklin. I discovered Ubuntu about two years ago, but never started seriously using it until 9.10 came out, but now I have seen the light!

  • -_- i wasted most of my life on windows... i feel like a dumbass...

  • @FranklinDubose true

  • @FranklinDubose Join the club dude.

  • @FranklinDubose

You aren't. You just feel like it. You were locked in. It's easy to break free.

  • u mean the country with the free heath care and the de-criminalized cannabis laws :)

  • i was rather talking about the country where people have little to no sense of humor because they're half baked most of the time

  • The best programs are for mac and Windows so I like them more but I'm on Ubuntu now and like how much you can change around and make it look how you like it.

  • Linux, especially Ubuntu blows big company like apple and microsoft out because

    1. Its free

    2. Loads of free apps

    3. Free source code and free to make changes on the OS

    4. A good community and brainstorm to build in new suggestion in the OS with voting for your suggestion like good/bad.

    5. Mac is based on linux, so they should just shut up.

Ubuntu has that promise to be free all the way down to the core, so just give it a try.

It isn't that bad, i've tried myself(:

  • 'tried', why did you just try it?

  • @spectrospirit Isn't the Mac based on BSD Unix, and not Linux. Just asking.

  • Yup Mac is based on BSD and the Mach kernel..

  • FYI Mac OS X is NOT based on Linux. It's kernel is BSD and Mach hybrid.

  • Unix

  • Its just the raw kernel base based on bsd, os x is a tuxoid still.

  • @spectrospirit

Mac OS X is not built on Linux, but Unix -- BSD to be more precise.

  • @foozid Ok, i thought it was based on Linux, it looks & handle almost just as Linux, but what's the difference between BSD and Linux? Isn't that almost the same?

  • @spectrospirit

bsd is basically the free version of the original unix. linux was started from scratch and doesn't have (or shouldn't have) any of the original unix source code. linux has a different kernel. freebsd has a more restricted license and has linux compatibility layers, but linux is free to modify and distribute but as far as i'm aware it has no bsd compatibility (not like it really needs it anyway)

  • @spectrospirit

Man, I use and love ubuntu, but "Mac is based on linux", are you nuts?

  • @oficinax Yup, i'm nuts haha. I found out later that i was wrong about that, Mac is based on Unix, not Linux. Still much i don't quite know, but shit happens...

  • @spectrospirit just fine

  • @oficinax Mac is based on UNIX

  • @BayaneyLasBayas did i say it isn't?

  • @spectrospirit (5) is wrong or misspelled. Mac is actually based on UNIX

  • @spectrospirit

    1. Correct

    2. Correct, although Windows an Mac also have free apps.

    3. Correct, although the end user might not care.

    4. This one is dependent on the distro.

    5. Wrong, Mac OS X is based on Mach and BSD. It is not based on Linux.

Linux is not perfect, but it is pretty cool.

  • @somethings90 You're right. You can get free apps for Windows and Mac.

I didn't thought of this at that time...

Its time for me to check out the latest Ubuntu Ultimate 2.6, it's maybe not perfect, but it have almost everything needed to replace both Windows and Mac.

I rather use Ultimate Edition, a modified Ubuntu packed with loads of apps, than the boring Ubuntu standard.

    Good or bad?

  • @spectrospirit

I have never used Ultimate Edition. I hope you like it.

  • @spectrospirit This is why linux rules servers :) but Ubuntu is not big much there

One correction OS X is based on FreeBSD no Linux :p

  • @ShadowriverUB

    Linux is Unix-Based.

    Mac is Unix-Based.

  • @h1ll37 yes mah boi, but mean Darwin kernel that powers OS X is based on FreeBSD :)

  • Comment removed

  • @spectrospirit Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD you moron.

  • Ok, one correction at nr 5.

@ShadowwwLFS MacOS X is not entirely based BSD, but with NextStep 3.3 as well.

That's what it says in Wikipedia.

  • @spectrospirit Mac isn't based on Linux, both are just based on Unix. I've personally tried all these systems and variations of them, to me OSX is my favourite because it is simple, reliable and syncs with my iPod and iPhone unintentionally. However, I do agree that Linux is an amazing and genius idea that governments should be sponsoring and using as a standard OS as opposed to OSX and Windows seeing as its a lot more cheaper and is open-source.

  • @MoDapation Hmm... you're right. I like Linux very much alltough Apple OSX is just as god, but i think they need some more colours in their theme, like Linux allready have.

The thing i like best with Linux is that everyone can contribute to make the system even better.

It's allmost like big company's such as Microsoft and Apple suddenly got tiny because Linux is not created by a company, but by people with ideas from all over the world who want to improve it.

    Sponsoring is a good idea...

  • @spectrospirit Yeah when someone is running Linux as their standard system, the modifications they personally make to it reflect them as a person, whether it be performance wise or interface wise, with OS X you don't get that as its customization of things is quite limited but it still looks good and runs smooth haha.

  • @spectrospirit Mac OSX is Unix based. Not linux.

  • @MarT304 I know, how many times are you guys going to tell me that? I corrected it at nr 5, do some checking please...

  • @MarT304 : Actually, it's BSD based.

  • @spectrospirit lmaooo

    stop on # 5

u obviously dont know shit about unix based operating systems

    linux and mac

are Unix based protocol operating systems

unix is the base os for linux, mac, maemo, gentoo etc

u should shutup because the only reason why macs cost alot (im a mac and linux fan)

is because they make almost all their hardware except the intel chips they even had their own until they made an agreement with intel corp so plz know your facts

  • @spectrospirit

Mac is based on linux? What the hell are you smoking? They're both made from UNIX you dumbass.

  • Why does Linux blow win and mac out of the water?

  • Think about this how long have you used Windows?

You didn't know how to use it when you first started, you picked up tricks over years, and year... Not over night...

Linux has a packages manager ... You can just type flash in the search tab and it pops up check the box click install...

Almost everything in Linux is built into it... It doesn't get any easier than that...

Linux Mint is more for New people the flash player and almost everything you need is already installed.

  • What are you specs? 5 stars!

  • lol this is so oldskool

  • I am guessing flash in a 64 bit environment? It really is as easy as going into the .mozilla folder, create folder called plugins and the copy paste the adobe flash plugin file to it.

It was almost a deal breaker for me too until it was explained how it all worked for the install.

Thankfully no more waiting for security updates that I should have and no more viruses. Might I suggest you give it another run? Maybe on a test machine? A free OS with loads of free software is hard to beat.

  • To use an old quote: Linux is only free if you don't put value on your time.

And this "cube" seems amazingly unusefull

  • This is why it must be an old quote eh ? when installing a lot of distros now it goes smooth with no needing to find drivers and all that jazz now. As for the cube, it's eye candy just like on the IPhone and how when you move your finger it slides pretty motions, or how my gps does these wobbly things. But if you work with multiple work stations its great, but I assume you have 1 desktop with multiple icons all over it and isn't need for your environment.

  • I valued the time I had to waste messing with anti-virus programs and all that rebooting.

  • ai si yo ya eh echo ese herxagono

  • I like it when people show us why Ubuntu is so great, and most of the time they say something like:"Look,Ubuntu is so f**king cool, I mean I can run MS Visual studio, I can run FL studio, Google Earth,my Windows games, and to show you why I really like it,I will run Windows on it right now, only for you :D !!!"Considering this convincing arguments I can only be amazed by what a stupid cube can do to people.... (P.S:I am a Happy Ubuntu user, but only because of the jelly windows,THAT is a REASON )

  • I see what you're saying, but I think Linux advocates tend to bring its ability to run windows/windows apps into the picture is to show people who only know windows and certain windows apps that they don't need to give it/them up to give Linux a try. That's an easier sell than telling them to drop it totally, plus any software they've bought to go with it.

  • I tried to install vmware-player 2.5.2 on my jaunty installation. It says it installed but I see no evidence of it anywhere. I tried typing vmware-player in the terminal and it brings up nothing =/

  • Whats your Ram like? 8 GB?

  • more like 32

  • 32GB? wtf

  • I run close to the same setup on a AMD 64 2.0GHZ and 2gb DDR PC3200 memory,.

ATI x1900 XTX 512mb Video card, 1TB 7200RPM SATA Drive And it FLIES...

Total cost of my PC was about 300 bucks...

50 bucks for the PC from Ebay... With memory.

    100 bucks for the drive

150 bucks for the video card.

I had XP installed on a second partition, but i wiped it, since it runs faster virtual..

If you dont have it and run windows, i would try it, it really is much faster..

  • Awesome, Thanks

  • Sorry, this does not blow any other OS out of the water. It's just boring.

And that zoom function you demonstrated was clearly just a copy of the Mac OS zoom function.

  • Can some one tell me the steps to setting this configuration up? I'm interested to replicate it. I checked Robbie website and could not find any references to it. I found a reference to Virtual 3D on his site called Unity but no ref to how to configure it. Is this demo of Ubuntu using 3D desktop~Compiz or Beryl-3D Matrix? Sounds like he is running Vmware DeskTop 6 with Ubuntu as client. Is there a method to do this just using Ubuntu-3D or must I purchase expensive Vmware application?

  • Do you mean how to enable all the 3D/snow/flashy effects? That's simple enough, after you let Nautilus install the proprietary drivers type "sudo apt-get install compizconfig" and from there you can customize everything from system/preferences/compizconfig settings manager.

As far as running a virtual desktop without the usual dual boot method. I would reference the ubuntu forums. Almost any question you can think of has already been answered there or will be within a few days of asking.

  • I switched to Ubuntu and its just so GOOD!

  • dude..trust me...JUST WAIT---ULL SEE THE SHITY DARK SIDE OF IT WHICH I GOT THE FIRST MINUTE WHEN I TRIED TO INSTALL VLC... NOTHIN WORKS ON IT.. SO CALLED SUDO..BARELY WORKED... like ARMAX THINGEE PLAYER WHICH IS DESINGED FOR UBUNTU ---IS BBABBBBdly optimized for ubuntu!!! took ages to open.. i recommend to stick to xp

  • who would be the idiot that wnated to install VLC windows version in a linux system instead of installing VLC for linux, which is the original one? (yes, VLC was born on linux and later ported to linux).

  • That was just a troll. It's illegal in most states to feed them because they just keep getting bigger and coming back. Nobody is dump enough to install Windows VLC when they could just sudo apt-get install vlc

  • Dude. Its not impossible installing stuff on Ubuntu. I have been using 9.04 for about 3 weeks now and haven't had a single problem installing anything (and i'm still a linux noob. . Vlc runs perfect i can play dvds. I am even playing windows games. Not all i want but enough to keep me happy. If your having problems with stuff go to the forums. That's where i always go when i have problems. there are very very few problems you could be faced with that someone hasn't already answered in the forum

  • its very easy to install vlc...

go to there website and it tells you

  • You're supposed to install programs using the Synaptic Package Manager, not through virus-ridden EXEs. In XP, you install programs by going to the company that made it, rather than having the software come to you.

Go to Synaptic, search for VLC, and install it. Easier than Windows!

And installing Vista for me required 17 CD-Rs and 8 hours, and Gateway had already preinstalled it. Ubuntu install took 20 mins and no CD-Rs.

  • hey ppl- i BELIEVE UBUNTU 9.04 WASNT DESIGNED FOR LOWER END CHEAP PC... which was apparently ubuntu target market.. but lsn.. on my p4 256 ram ati video card-- i think rage-- UBUNTU LAGGED LIKE HEEELLLL it was a nightmare just going through the application and find firefox.. and from my experience --UBUNTU IS INCREDIBLE HARD TO USE EVEN FOR A 19 year old computer user umm--lover! Reason why i booted ubuntu on my pc was because of all the pump up and goodie i got from the articles on it

  • Who told you Ubuntu was designed to lower end cheap PCs? If you want to use one, there are many lightweight linux distros that will work well on your PC. Ubuntu does not.

  • There's always Xubuntu for a slightly lighter version of Ubuntu

  • or DSL (Damn Small Linux)

  • Use Xubuntu much better

  • Ubuntu is exceptionally easy to use and anyone that uses it properly will find it's easily the best OS available. Its one flaw is a serious lack of support for commercial software, and that's it. Sadly, this means I have to use Vista the majority of the time :(

  • I would say ubuntu is a good os but not the best available. I think ubuntu is rather bloated. Also any commercial software you use you can find something in linux that will do the same for free and most the time better. You should give some of the other distros a try and try other WM's other then kde and gnome. Once i started playing with openbox i have never gone back to anything else.

  • Can I use hw acceleration without enabling it in BIOS? Cuz my notebook FW has no feature of it, but cpu is supported (T7300).

I couldnt run a Windows XP mode in windows 7 bcs of it...

    Thx

  • So ubuntu and vmware and U have the best possible combination. Free legal reliable plus still can use your favourites programs of cause if i can not find a Linux equivalent

  • whoo! Barrie, ON!!!

  • Is this hardware virtualization?

  • yes

  • ubuntu + vmware does it all.

    you noob

  • @apokalypse24:

They don't do gaming. At least not well.

  • IT IS

    oo-boon-too

    and

    bay-ta

    gawd!

  • only if you keep it that way...

  • Dude, get the pronounciation right man!!!

  • me? or the YOUBUNTU person in the video?

  • is pronunciation!

  • its pronounced oo-boon-too

  • Dang man some people couldn't even pronounce they own names if they tried.....

  • What is your hardware specs? Is the 3d effect available for Debian 4, since Debian use older version of software.

    Anyways nice video.

  • nice pres man. i liked it very much.

  • Not that it matters too much but it's pronounced IPA: [uːˈbuːntuː], which is like ooboontoo, and it's baytah (beta) not bet ah. Sorry I'm just a little ocd when it comes to people annunciating correctly. Awesome video though.

  • I agree with you but here in the UK we say beeta, and as we invented the language I'm right ;-)
