You should use Vector Magic first... much quicker instead of manually re-drawing everything in Illustrator. Just a few clicks and it will Vector all your lines, make the background completely white. And if there's any issue (it may vector some eraser areas), you can manually remove it too. Then open with Illustrator.
Thanks, I'll check it out but it kind of looks like like the trace tool that Illustrator already has. Which is no use to me because it doesn't separate out the lines for individual colouring
The Wacom tablet has it's own issues, and it is great once you've got round those and yes it's quicker but maybe not as quick as you might think. If you can colour an image in 1.5 hours I'd say you're doing pretty well with or without the tablet
I can see what you are doing here, seems to be giving you that real thick and thin cartoon feel which may be a bit time consuming but of course there are no rules on how much time you spend on a piece or work
I am curious as to why you wouldn't simply use the live trace function though ??
Good question. Two reasons.1) I would have to spend much longer on the rough drawing getting the lines just right 2)The live trace function tends to merge lines together in unpredictable ways and I need all the lines to be individually selectable so they can be given different colours
OK well that doesn't make much sense to me right now as I come from the hand-drawn background and am just learning illustrator.
I just had a go at your way of outlining and I definitely get what you are doing but you must have been doing this for a long time as what you are doing must require a lot of skill ?
I will watch your other videos, thanks for your help.
By the way, no sound on your videos or is that just me ?
Yeah it's hard to explain,Basically, live trace will give a good result if your drawing is sharp and your scan is clean. But the final stage is colouring the "ink" lines, making them a few shades darker than the colour they enclose. So if you wanted a blue outline on the coat and say a brown outline on the face you couldn't do this with live trace because all the lines would be just clumped together in one large object and not individually selectable. Better vids with sound are coming.
I get that absolutely as that is how I have always done the outlines on various caricatures and cartoons by hand over the years, Disney style you might say. I have noticed that I am unable to isolate different outlines to adjust the subtlety of colour as you say and I am guessing there is actually no way of doing that then ?
So I definitely get why you do what you are doing.
Man, after a lot of years of being an artist re-learning it all in digital is quite a job.
That is so labor intensive. Why not just use a Wacom tablet? Illustrator makes it so you don't have to have a perfectly steady hand. check out my tut on inking with a tablet
I also use Photoshop but I don't think it's faster necessarily. The advantage of illustrator is tiny file sizes and the ability to scale the image infinitely with no loss of quality.
