  • The difference between this version and the Sticky Fingers version is that you hit some of the notes much sooner than on the original. Its more of a rapidfire version than a lazy one lol. I play it much closer to the original and I use standard tuning. On that subject, the open G tuning I think is not necessary, I wouldnt retune to open G unless I wanted a fuller sound and didnt want to switch guitars. Same thing goes for Brown Sugar.

  • I wish all song on utube were this easy to learn!!! you make it so easy to see, thanks bro!!!

  • Excellent tutorial. Thank u

  • Justin can you to a short video on how Keith plays the riff once the song goes into the Santana, maracas, 2nd half? thanks!

  • Keith always knew how to keep things simple with Open G.. but it rocked big time! Open G has very distinctive sound that immediately when you play it you can't help but think of the Stones! Great Tutorial and you made it easy to learn this one!

    Good Job!

  • NICE MAN !

  • Fucking awesome man !!!!! You are pretty great at this !

  • trust in your ears is the best policy, if you can't use your ears then you aren't a musician, or your a justin beiber fan,,,one or the other. :)

  • @guitardude499 I'm not a Beiber fan but, Bieber can play. You probably can't. Great video lest keep the comments to that

  • @pjm0551 ...

  • one of the best riffs, expertly taught. thank you mate.

  • Thanks for this man! Even a dumb ass like me can figuer it out. This is my favorite Stones riff and being able to play it now makes me really happy.

  • Thanks for this man!

  • Thank yew! This is really straighforward. I'd been bustin' my ass trying to get this in standard tuning. Fkn Keef!

  • Right on buddy! You're making me sound like I know what I'm doing! LOL!

  • Love the Taylor riff! keep rockin.

  • fuck, sepuldeva, is that you bro!

  • fuck, sepuldeva, is that you bro!

  • Hey Justin - you doing anything on the 6th string at all? I took my low E string off and it keeps me from having to mute it all the time. A lot of the old-timers did it that way.

  • Hey dude , are you sure this was written in open G, just asking. I cant imagine, OK im going to create a great riff in open G. This is one of the greatest riffs of all time in my opinion. Ive tryed to do it in standard tuning, cant exactly. I play by ear too, how did you know this was open tuning? Great vid, Bill

  • Amazing.- "I will die a happy man knowing I can play this."

    Thank you.

  • how long have you practice for that? its great!!!

  • you are really great, man!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • good quick n dirty working version , can play it out this week-- respek

  • thanks for taking the time to do this. I have saw other videos by you and they are helping me a lot. I am 53 years old, try to play all my life. I have now found out i have a bad case of ADD/AHDD this along with no one to show me stuff kept me from moving forward with my playing. Now i get to take speed to help with the ADD and i have you/youtude to show me the way. Again thank you and please don't stop

  • awesom job...

  • great job!!thx buddy

  • nice nice im veiwing this beacuse ima learn how to play gutair

  • i didn't know tiger woods played guitar. cool.

  • Great lesson! thanks to Mick Taylor for penning this great song.

  • outside of turn to G very hard me to follow for a lesson. I will also volunteer that I not very good and don't know the scale very will. Thanks for posting.

  • its pretty close. missing a note or two in the intro i think.

  • I read an interview where keith said he plugs straight into fensder amp to get his sound

  • That's not it...sorry.

Listen to it again mate. Good try on the D and G string... on the original you can definitely hear the lower G string (A tuned down).

  • WELL PLAYED MY FRIEND AND YOUR TIPS AT THE END WELL SAID I HOPE YOU KEEP SHOWING ALL US GUTARISTS OUT THERE MORE OF YOU TUITIONAL VIDEOS!!!!

  • That's not it! Go back and listen to it again.

  • wow, I just stumbled onto this lesson... this is great, thanks

  • Open G. No wonder I could never get close.

Was this not originally Mick Taylor? (just askin')

  • Nice guitar man is it a standard 60s strat ?

  • hey thanks man my dad said if i learned this song and get the rythm down hell buy me any pedal iwant so thanks 4 the video it helped

  • Justin, helpful people like you keep great music alive. You are to be praised and thanked. All the best to you from Astra.

    wwwdotastramusicdotorg

  • excellent guitarwork, Justin.

  • As far as guitar lessons go, this is a masterpiece. I'm sick of the no-counts who babble for 10 minutes before actually showing anything. They're not fit for much except stealin watermelons out of the truck patch.

You're one of those guys who don't talk... you get stuff done.

  • How much fun is this! I don't play but envy anyone who can play like you.

  • You've got excellent guitar fingers, physically i mean..long and tapered like Jimi

    Hendrix...lucky u..lol...i

  • Terrific, simple, precise. Much as with "Midnight Rambler". Thanks a bunch, mate!

  • esta mal papi

  • Nice vid Justin! Thanks, gonna go try it!-Mark

  • Justin, you do the riff in open G...but you can actually play it in standard tuning...if you listen to the record, you can hear Keith modulate from G to F in the chorus section...and you can't do that in open G.

  • thank you brother, great stuff.

  • great job, easy to learn technique.

  • You rock Brother! thanx.

  • Love this song. Your instruction is great. Thank you!

  • Love this riff...thank you. Add more! Maybe lead to Gimmie Shelter

  • this is incorrect

  • Bookmarked!

  • is there a way to play it without retuning the guitar? otherwise, great job, dude!

  • yeah, close.... but....

  • Not an exact rendition, but pretty close approximation

  • doesn't have to be, you nerds. It's his "own" expression of it.

  • Nice Justin,

    Thanks

  • at last!!!........a really well-explained guitar lesson on YT

    Thanx

  • Dude, great lesson, Kept it simple...I appreciate it !

  • great lesson, thank you

  • THanks for the post.

  • i´ll be speak something to everybody want be a teacher, i agree you have possibility to play guitar very well.

    now a kritik.

people in east dont speak english. all there are expect ist to hear guitar. and you want to show where the fingering ist just working, than you musst show it. i can see only the out string you cover i dont know how many string you push down. be nice and try to show it. its as a whole, i would be say, have a great week

  • Amp Keith used for that Was a Fender Deluxe.

  • Thanks dude, Got the song in 3 mins,

Now it's time to rip it with the band,,,

Thank you Youtube for on the spot lessons!!

where was this 20 years ago when we had to buy guitar magazine to learn the great tunes like Van Halen or Stones,,,,i guess i should shut up and get back to the jam,,,Cheers!

  • 20 yrs ago u picked up a guitar and started a revolution you didnt have to learn anything

its all different now everyones in it for the money

  • Dude, it has always been about the money. You can be the best band in the world but you'll still need to feed the kids/pay rent or morgage. That's why I don't believe in the word "sell out". The moment a band sells their music they are in my eyes "selling out". And there is nothing wrong about that. Their just trying to make a living, just like you and me.

  • Nice job. Even an old fart like me can understand it.

  • "engraved" in my head. Hmm...

  • yeaah man.. great lesson

  • thanks for the lesson. guess i was way off, i thought it started w/the middle strings on the 12th fret and was a 2-string slide back to f, d, c, and opened up to g for the riff.

  • very good lesson and very usefull thanks

  • what amp did keith record the intro on best distortion ever

  • I always heard it was an Ampeg V4.

  • In listening to the original, I hear 1) Richards playing the riff in open G Tuning and 2) Taylor comping in standard tuning. Part II, the Jam features Taylor doing the solo riff with Richards mostly laying out, but doing some comping, still in Open G. Thanks for the video, it's a great song.

  • playing through soul = making funny faces

  • What a dumb statement you made ... it's an instructional piece. Besides, you, the individual, is supposed to supply the "soul." You can't teach "soul" anyway. This Sosa kid has the riffs down cold.

  • this is bang just beautifull Keith has the feel the soul he always has Keith plays the words u hear the whole lyric the song yeah rock on man Love thanks

  • works thanks

  • KR is on one channel playing loud rhythm - the main riff, and MT shows up strumming along on the other channel, until his solo starts, and KR is by then playing rhythm. Listen to the MT side first - MT doesn't start playing until 24 secs.

  • close but not exactly, it is in open g, but the phrasing is different.

  • this doesnt seem to be the best lesson if you wanna get dead on and play along with the song. But i do like how you played this, and I've even changed it up for myself. I love this riff, and thank you for teaching it too me, i loving adding my own parts to it and messin around. Thanks again (:

  • thanks got some bits I didnt know well. I take the low E string off my telecaster.

  • Well said!

You did a wonderful job , thank you!

  • I think Mick Taylor played that riff, not Keith Richards.. But not sure ;)

GO SEE MY EDITINGS! (There's musics editings too; clips coming soon)

    THANKS.

  • Hi ! I completly agree with you, it was Mick Taylor playing this riff, and not in open G, but in standard tuning. This is the right way to play that riff like K.Richards plays it ! Not a bad lesson, far from that, but there are so many ways to play this riff...

  • no its not

  • very professional, thanks again

  • you are exactly correct about listening and sort of naturally grabbing the notes. that requires one to have an "ear". Anyway, this is obviously a Keith riff.

due to open tunings, keith's stuff is usually easy to figure out, but you have to listen for the nuances.Awesome instructional, bro.

  • i think mick taylor played the intro ,i could be wrong.

  • THANKS

  • Thanks, I wish you would offer more videos. Thanks again

  • I think I got it..yeehaa!

  • Great work, very helpful. Thanks.

  • well done on your instructions dont play but I understood you .....think it was mick taylors contribution though good job...great album

  • Dude! You are one of the best instructors on You Tube..!

  • Mick Taylor I think.

  • Comment removed

  • Just wanted to say you knocked it out of the park with breaking down how to play these riffs. Excellent work, thank you for taking the time to produce and post this!

  • That was good. Thanks. I been doing it sooo wrong.

  • Ha ha! that's totally it man! GREAT!

by the way is that an american reissue strat model, or a mexican or what?

  • Well done, been trying to figure this out for a long time, you nailed it ...thanx bro!

  • Hey brother, great You Tube! Ha ha... I surfed to find out the riffs on the song which was good cause not knowing this is tuned to Open G, I would have come up with a way to play it tuned to E... ha ha ha ha... It obviously sounds better in the proper tuning.... Good job. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

  • Thx dude, that inspired a funny hour here.

  • Muchas Gracias! Excelente tutoria

  • you go boy!

  • Mr. Sosa, you are the best teacher on the net (I believe Andy Alendort of GP or is he now with gw is the best I have ever seen, but that you dough. You are #1 for free.)

  • thank you (from Argentina)

  • Hey Justin , can you tell me if you use the ampl clear or you have kind of effect in this clip?

Sorry if this question is wast of time!

  • Nope...don't use pedals. The amp has just a little gain to give it some crunch. But not too much.

  • this is pretty damn good guy i was just listening and i pretty much got it

    open G is th best

  • fantastic, you should make a dvd set on guitar lessons ive paid good money and did not get a ounce of info yours, well 1 hour and i just about goy cant you hear me knocking down, wait!! just goy it, 1hr-1 min!!!!!!! GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Open G really? Never knew!

  • lol same here. man such a great song but i dunno open g. anyone know?

  • Oh well, I know Open G if you really want to know? It's : DGDGBD

  • hey cool thx

  • Take the top E string off of your guitar!

Then get the intro progression correct.

You're merely in the ball park.

As Keith said, you only need five strings, four fingers, three chords, and one asshole.

    ha ha ha

I love you posting this, though.

  • Thank you!

  • Great Job Bro - Great Song too. Been playing it in standard but this makes sense. Good instruction too! Thank You.

  • This is not correct for the studio version. Listen to it and it is obviously different.

Nice job on Midnight Rambler though

  • you've made life alot easier for me...thanks!

  • Interesting. I been playing it in standard tuning forever. Thanks for posting.

  • NICE Thank You!! Love MY TELECASTER!

  • Your instruction videos are excellent....VERY well done. I've learned a lot. You have a great talent for instruction..hope you post more.

  • like it!!:D

  • great job - thanks

  • Great demonstration. Thanks. Love that song

  • one of my favorite songs now alls i need is a guitar lol

  • Wow! I've been trying too figure this riff out for years. Don't fret about your intsruction it was good. Big thanks for sharing.

  • Nice job...

You should also mention to novices, that the tuning called "Open G", from Low (6th) String to High (1st) String is:

    D --- G --- D --- G --- B --- D

  • Good job! Thanks

  • Great job, Bro!

  • You do a great job a teaching guitar. I have taken lessons before, but this was so much better. Really impressed.

  • Nice job man. Really good instruction on the riff. Better than many. Richards stuff is often hard to figure out too. Alternative tunings mixed with heroine made him a unique guitarist.

  • GREAT JOB, well done.. I love you!

  • Thanks for sharing your expertise.

    Tony

  • Great video, there is nothing wrong with being concise.

  • hey justin. U R awesome. You R a great teacher, both thisw video and the midnite rambler one are incredible. U have a real feel for teaching.U should do it full time and charge for it, no joke man. How about the live solo from Mick Taylor on Love in Vain on get yer ya ya's out.I have never seen a vid of that B4, and I am willing to pay for U to post it man! Happy Trails!

  • nice work, thanks for this...you got a good feel for the riff...

  • Tune your axe to open G or A,.. barre at any fret and finger an Am up and down up and down and BINGO "Keith"!!!

  • I suck at the guitar and I was able to get most of this last night. it is so fun to play. thank you very much. Saw Ronnie do the solo part of this song after the sax solo, at show in San Antonio about 4 years ago. Un-f'n-believeable! thanks again

  • thanks for the lesson

always wanted to know how to play this song

    you are a good teacher

  • ROCK ON MY FRIEND!!!! such a sweet riff

  • You rock and long live the fabulous rolling stones.

  • Thanks for the great video lesson post !

    I love this song.

  • Whats so hard about playin that? I can kill that song (on guitar hero) :O)

  • that souns exactly like the song bu i cant really see what ur playing... mind tellign me the tabs? thanks mate

  • lol and he plays it in open G.

  • can you tell me I play let it bleed and you got the silver in F and it sounds cool to me what do think or say Bud . I love watching your stuff its just radical

  • Reply to aquilae5:

'You Got the Silver' is in Open D (DADF#AD) with a capo on the third fret(F).

  • This is a good explanation about how to do this difficult guitar number. If you're beginning, pay attention.

  • my pusssy is wet 5

  • Well done...it's a signature riff of rock!

  • Nice job! I have always loved that riff. But I could never figure it out. Lo and behold - it's tuned to G. Well...duh on me. Thanks for the lesson!

  • ........holy...

  • Nice tutorial. Thanks.

  • Awsome job! been waiting for a lesson on this classic for ages. love your take on it! keep up the good work!

  • This a great vid any chance of the second part of the song

  • damn!what a riff

  • I can't believe someone would criticise your lesson. I bought my guitar about 5mos. ago and you've been a tremendous help. I can play at least some of CYHMK & Jumpin Jack Flash because of you. If you'd show me how to play WALK AWAY by the James Gang I'd be very greatful.

  • great videos you got!! really good!
