They both knew the rules for all of the games that they played with each other. How far they could go. And could be bachelors who could walk around the house in their undies, burp, etc.

Just like the original show this was based on, 'Steptoe & Son'. Except that in this show, Lamont left to work on the Alaska pipeline, and Fred was left to himself. In 'Steptoe & Son' both never get out of the rut of poverty, and both eventually kill each other off in a final episode.
