  • Back in the mid 60's I rode the Chief, Super Chief, Texas Chief and the El Capitan.

I was in the service and it was cheaper than flying plus it put me in the middle of cities and not way out at the airports.

I took the El Capitan (THE Luxury train of the era) across the U.S. several times.

High level cars, vista domes, meal service on white linen...just amazing.

    Sorry we lost the magic.

It was always a great experience.

  • WHY AND BY WHOM WOULD MY ORIGINAL COMMENTS HAVE BEEN FLAGGED AS SPAM?!

    THAT ACTION IS NOT APPRECIATED!

In fact, considering my level of technical expertise and personal experience regarding the Santa Fe's passenger services (overall) and their flagship train (specifically), it is nothing short of an insult!

  • Nice intro, and I know that conductor, one of the best conductors they got on the Amtrak system!

  • aMTRAK needs to paint their engines to the corresponding rail lines, ergo the Super Cheif's engines need to be pained in the old red yellow warbonnet

  • i have this video :)

  • NICE!

  • Back in the late 90's the Southwest Chief also carried freight. It would have 4 GE P 42 locomotive the normal superliners passenger cars and them some freight cars at the end. There was times that they would three P42 and an EMD F-40, but still, 4 powerful locomotive for a passenger train is great! I used to go to Norwalk CA to ride on the Metro Link, and the Southwest Chief would be haulng but, though Norwalk station! It was a very impressive sight. :~ )

  • @panamcunard Yeah, they were fine when they just had the MHCs, when they added all the other express, I hated ridin' No.4 and they leave ontime, but then havin' to do a back up move to either Track 11 or 12, or the center track between 12 and 10 to pick up the cars and take forever for an air test!

  • xanadu77, you are correct, and the Southwest Cheif still runs today

  • Howard...I'm no expert on the subject but I believe the El Cap was bi-level from 1956/1957. I recall that the cars were built in '56. Later it was ran combined with the Super Chief.....until May of 1971 when Amtrak took over, and even then continued to run for some time.

  • I'd be happy if Amtrak would just bring back that "All Aboard America" fare. 60 days to use the ticket, and one to three region/fares to choose from. The three region fare was the entire USA. All coach price (so anything else was extra). And the best part was it was simple and easy to understand. Amtrak over the last fifteen or so years seems like it's been engaged in a program to alienate people... Dealing with Amtrak needs to be "user-friendly" again.

  • @railadvocate 15 days/8 trains is $349. i got that for my christmas present. you get 8 trains segments within 15 days im going from philly to LA to seattle to chicago back to philly in a week. and its only 6 of my 8 trips, and 7 of my days. so it works.

  • If only she still ran today, It was nothing less than a five star hotel on wheels!
