after 7 hours a steel girder on Floor 13 lost its connection to one of the 81 columns supporting the building. Floor 13 collapsed, beginning a cascade of floor failures to Floor 5. Column 79, no longer supported by a girder, buckled, triggering a rapid succession of structural failures that moved from east to west. All 23 central columns, followed by the exterior columns, failed in what's known as a "progressive collapse'.

When the girder on floor 13 failed, it no longer provided support to its connecting columns, they buckled and translated, shifting weight overburdening the rest of the building. The larger (heavier) a building is, the more important columns are. Weight is proportional to volume, strength is proportional to cross sectional area. It's the same reason ants can carry 20x their weight and we can't.

As soon as the top 33 floors moved downward, (one fraction of one inch x the mass of 33 floors) they were doing work on the bottom of the structure. The mass accumulated with each floor and velocity increases. That work eventually overwhelmed the 13 floors below and for a time there was effectively no resistance. If you drop an anvil on a beer can, the anvil will crush the beer can. Multiply the weight of the anvil by 10^9; strength of can by 10^3. No evidence for demolition.

I've tried to explain it as simply as I can. By scaling, I mean the SIZE (i.e. weight and area) of the bricks and the height from which they fall. The buildings slowed down for one fraction of one second in the positive z direction while it was accelerating due to gravity in the negative z direction. Without extremely precise instruments, no one could detect that infinitesimal deceleration. Over an interval of anything more than about a microsecond, it wouldn't slow down.
