i think it is just you. remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I LOVE her eyes...

  • Those dance shoes... are every bugs worset mightmare

  • @moraz21 Worst*. Your welcome. -D

  • I was so scared that she would fall in those heels....

  • If i were her I would have been smirking thinking ''DAME, im the baddest bitch in this place''.

  • this dance was so beautiful and captivating!

  • Darn you, movie making! I loved how it went in the book so much better. :(

  • Dudes, this is a beautiful and eccentric dance right here. I'm sorry if you expected something along the lines of booty shaking and titties popping and bitches going down.

  • @endingnote LMAO! You are my HERO!

  • The dance or random 'flailing' that she did was actually a story.

The story is that a woman has found out her husband is cheating on her so she goes outside to go look for him. Unfortunately there is a blizzard and in the end she freezes and dies.

  • @babyathina how do you know that?

  • @solidlove015 Wikipedia :)

  • the grudge

  • 1:10 Am I the only one that thought she looks like a vampire?

  • The reason Saiyuri was able to pull that dance off was because she's got that certain something that Hatsumomo and Pumpkin don't. It's not something that has a definite name, but the Spanish refer to it as 'arte.'

  • reminds me of the ring...... this scene is my fave

  • Was the Baron who impregnated Mameha? I didn't read the book just have the movie.

And was she in love with Baron? I know she tells Sayuri that she didn't allow herself that.

I swear Gong Li is one of the most beautiful woman ever. Michelle is too and so graceful.

  • Yes, The Baron impregnated Mameha, but she had three abortions at his request. I think she was in love with him, but didn't want to pursue it and since it could ruin her reputation as a geisha. Mameha heard about Hatsumomo having a relationship with Koichi(a married man) that got her into serious trouble and was warning Sayuri of the dangers of pursuing the Chairman.

  • What is the shoes called???

  • Incredible movie!

  • simply beautiful. well they way she expresses her story in form of dace was stunning. its a play, if some one please observe

  • that was the weirdest dance EVER!!

  • wow.. i absolutely LOVE her performance i the beginning... its so beautiful and graceful... i melt inside everytime i see it. xD

  • woah peacocks, they are really mean birds o_o hmm, i wonder what a hatsumo would look like getting attacked by one...

  • In real life though....she can dance her behind off....watch her in house of the flying daggers shes plays a bilnd girl and has to play a game with one of the soilders where he throws stones at drums and she has to use her hearing and dancing to hit the drum the stone was hit on

  • To me her dance seems like a lot of random flailing. Idk maybe it's because I'm American and I just can't appreciate the beauty of it or something.

  • @midnighthanyou Im American... And i thought it was beautiful?

  • she's doing hakobi :D one kind of kata :D HAKOBI is the art of walking without raising your foot when walking :)

  • 4:13 if you Pause it it looks likge a Hot and powerful couple...love Gong li

  • what does the dance mean?

  • @Melissadhija ikr like wtf and im asian lol=D

  • anyone else feel like buying the movie now? I do..

  • That performance must be the origin of the contemporary dance!!!

  • 2:15 ALWAYS makes me think of the Grudge..But I love that dance, its so beautiful!!

  • That dance both elegant and WTF? XD

  • its was elegant untill 1:33 , its was very woah , but styill like it :D

  • those shoes just aren't a good idea...

  • i love this movie/book! every slide is a work of art.

  • thats right hatsumomo, stare and be jealous

  • beautiful geiko stravinshchina

  • Guhhh of course the best part of the movie and it's the only part that chooses to freeze

  • So they probably had to go through with a bunch of mops... all the drool on the floor and all!

  • man i love this dance so much. wish i could learn it.... i tried to bend my bac like she did, but i fell over first time i tried.. XD

  • Am i the only one who thought she looked like she was from the exorcism or the ring when she did her dance?

  • @kwaltz1220 lol i was thinking the same thing

  • @kwaltz1220 What a culturally ignorant thing to say.

  • the dance blow me away, ahah so elegant beautiful and georgeous!

  • What's with the shoes?

  • This dance was NOT in the book. It is something the directors made up for her. Its not the dance she does it the book.

  • @EverSnow18 i havent read the book yet so i dont know the difference, but just wondering, how can you tell its different from the book..... you read a book, you dont watch it O_o

  • @HeartShapeGlasses007 it describes it. -___- and even the directors for this movie said it was different. the book is about a story or poem. I'd have to look it up to tell you which. In the movie its about Sayuri and her life. The book is pretty detailed. If you read it you'll know.

  • now those are some high heels!

  • That dance part really sent chills up my spine and goosebumps... in a good way. lol

  • lool all those mens obessessive's eyes watching at 0:20 ... creeeeep!

  • omg those r cool ass shoes

  • the okobo that maiko wear are very different than the oiran/Yūjo of the 'red light district' .Shimabara, of Kyoto. there is a video here of what it was like at one time: its called "Edo Wonderland Oiran Parade".

those are definitely not okobo of a geisha. read Liza Dalby's book "Geisha', and "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Mineko Iwasaki. this movie is interestng, but no where near as fascinating at the real thing! i wish i could go see them...or be able to wear kimomo like theirs.

  • why is Sayuri not dressed as a maiko, but as one of the old prostitutes?? they were the only ones to wear those crazy platform zori. is this dance going on in Gihon, or in Pontocho?

  • @LadyDeerskin im not sure what you mean by "old prostitutes" but she is a maiko and maiko did wear those high platform shoes. they are called okobo geta sandals and they represent a maiko as being young but once they become geiko those shoes change. as for where they are preforming im not sure. hope that helps alittle

  • @LadyDeerskin Not 100% sure, but it could be because in the book, it was either Mameha or Sayuri who performed a dance where the character was a courtesan, hence the wicked platform zori x]

  • that was cool

  • omg the dance was amazing. from the instant she stepped out :O

  • Geisha and other traditional dancers have lots of kabuki dances in their repertoire. "Sagi Musume" is extremely popular and anyone who is familiar with nagauta style of music (nagauta being the accompaniment here) would be familiar with this particular piece as well.

  • @MrVuittonLouis

i said it does NOT remind me of a geiko dance...but more a oiran dance because of the shoes. honestly, i hate this move bc it does NOT represent Geiko or maiko at all! this movie disgusts me on so many levels.

  • @MrVuittonLouis

interesting...still doesn't remind me of a geisha dance...more oiran because of the shoes.

  • It wasn't until after I read the book that I realized when Hatsumomo was talking about "Taking care of a little nuisance," she really meant Mameha was having an abortion.

  • reminds me of oiran more than geisha.

  • dude... her wooden logs presents her statue of a geisha

  • I like it when the chairman wipes the fallen leaves from Sayuri's kimono and takes it out of her hair.

The dance is beautiful, quite modern actually. Beautiful costume, hair, make-up, light and music.

  • i'm not really sure if the audience looked sad.. or they just looked scared.

  • i really would like to know the story behind the dance. is it about a woman who was going crazy because it snowed too much? :D

  • @KiyuROCKS hahahaha seems like it

  • @Dhikababy According to an interview with the director from the behind the scenes featurette, the dance is the story of a heartbroken courtesean who gets caught in a vicious snowstorm and dies. The backbend at the end is to signify her journey into the afterlife.

  • i loved that dance! ^.^ i wonder how long and hard the actors had to practice???????

  • I wish I had her eyes!

  • when chiyo fell..i was like " OH SHIT NO GET UP CHIYO!!..oh wait never mind, she was supposed to do that PHEW!

  • i'm looking at these comments about how 'bad' sayuri's dance was and shaking my head. Not only because that dance is one of my favorite scenes from any movie of all time, but because so many people have obviously never heard of the term 'controlled abandon'

  • Sayuri is so beautiful...

  • omg those shoes...holy crap...props to you sayuri!!!!

  • the chair men is sooooo sooo sooo soo hot if i was Sauyuri's i would be in love with the chairmen too also because hes so kind , willing to stand aside to a man he owes so much to try and take his love. <3 chairmen

  • I would love to be able to wear one of those kimono, my hair styled like Saiyuri's. I would feel like a princess

  • i think that i get the story that she performed with the snow

  • her performance is so freaking cool and amazing and great at the same time

  • 1:10 she's just like a vampire?????

  • this is the most creepy dance i ever saw! yet its beautiful at the same time! T__T i am confused! XD

  • isnt mameha's obi tied a bit low for her age surely it should only be an inch or 2 lower than sayuri's i mean shes nt tht old

  • so those are the shoes they wore when it snowed? damn....

  • So elegant... so beautiful... so... so... WOAH THE SHOES.

  • @Filehvas Thats exactly what I said! XD

  • @Filehvas 101 dalmations thumbs up my friend lol!

  • Geisha Ghost Mode!.

  • OOOH THAT BITCH GONNA GET FUUUUUCKEEED

  • those are some downright lady gaga shoes right there.

  • That is the most beautiful danco i've ever seen...

  • Geisha...We don't sell our bodies...we sell our skills!

  • if only zhang ziyi eyes were actually blue! what a magnificent combination!

  • how does the song where sayuri is dancing calls???

  • she looks like those japanese ghost, we didnt anyone freak out???

  • very good show

    thanks

  • zhang ziyi.

    she's so effing beautiful.

  • Just so people know, the dances often told stories, so I am guessing Sayuri is dancing a dance about sorrow, or someone dying.. I <3 her shoes :D

  • @SuPeRsTaR71679051 yeah, the dance is called "a courtier returns to his wife" (or it is in the book, and originally mameha dances it, but oh well) and she dances the part of the wife after she sees her husband leaving his mistress. she becomes sick from the cold, and after "performing her dance of sorrow" dies :( sad, but remarkably beautiful :)

  • awww she looks like she was made to be in that garden :') it looks so beautiful!

  • Peacock! :)

  • This entire scene is breathtakingly beautiful.

  • BARON STAY AWAY FROM MY SAYURI, LOL

  • i love how their dances tell stories especially the fan dances

  • she did almost the same dance at her movie: the house of flying dangers....

  • That shoes fit to Lady GaGa

  • 2 words chairman!!! 2 words is all i need

    "wonderful tonight"...BOOM..PREGNANT!!

    *swoons*...ovaries explode

    *iz ded*

  • Everything about this scene is CAPTIVATING....

  • That snow dance reminds me of drunken boxing style fighting.

  • 2:07 I was like crap she messed up.

  • I read somwhere that the story Suyri is dancing/performing is of a Queen who discovers her husband was cheating on her. She runs from the palace to only get lost in the winters snow and freezes to death. Sad story, beautiful dance.

  • @HORSEZOX No thats Mameha's dance in the book called "A Courtier Returns to His Wife". Sayuri's dance is about how a women takes a morning swim and falls in love with a dolphin prince. This dance isn't like the book. It is supposed to show her hard life and all the sorrows in it. So its supposed to look wild.

  • @EverSnow18 oh..haha..thank you for correcting me. you must have read the book then. so what is the story behind the dance in the film..i am confussed.

  • @HORSEZOX Its about her life, how it was filled with pain and loss and its wild to show that. Idk thats what i heard. It might be something else

  • @EverSnow18 I read online that Mameha's dance story was used in the movie, they swaped the roles around i guess. the book and movie are quite different...

  • that elegance *_* Japan is the most beautiful country in all ways !

  • What did he say at 4:39 ????

  • it really takes alot not to fall on your ass in thoses shoes, i would imagine. the dance was lovely though!

  • i want to say good things about the dance but i just cant. how is that even a dance? shes just flailing around like a mad woman. i was terrified. o.O

  • @tingChiqa i can see you have no artistic taste . . .

  • @savannahwilliams0 i like you.

  • @SheepAteMyFanBoys i like me, too

  • @savannahwilliams0 or could it be that i am speaking the truth and not pretending to have such 'high artistic taste' of yours? gawd.

  • @tingChiqa call it what you will

  • @savannahwilliams0 pretend all you want. :)

  • @tingChiqa i do not pretend. But whatever, i'll let you win. since it seems to matter to you so much that you have the last word.

  • @savannahwilliams0 sure, if you say so. :)

  • i love her blue outfit and i want it and her umbrella but it is kinda like a twisted Cinderella story. misses nitta is her step mom,her step sisters are pumpkin and hatsumomo, her fairy god mother is Mamaha her prince is the chairman. btu it all comes crashing down when the war hit and she losses everything to work in a field bye dyeing clothing in water.

  • what i can try to make out about the dance is she is a woman who is walking in the snow and she has alot of emotions and expresses them threw the dance of the felling of where to go in her life and stuff pretty cool i think.

  • she kinda looks like hatsumomo during the dance part

  • Beautiful.

The dance is about a man who betrays his wife. The wife runs after her man, but then freezes.

    Good dance, bad story. xD

  • Oh, and might I say that the lot of you are incredibly ignorant and culturally insensitive? If you can't appreciate another culture along with its beliefs and practices, then don't bother watching this movie.

  • @willytillyfillyI have to agree with you there. its wrong to judge something you dont understand

  • When she's dancing she looks like a psycho bitch. Haha, who would ge turned on by that?

  • Her performance reminds me of Yuki-Onna, or at least what Yuki-onna would be like.

  • Why are they clapping? O_o I'd want my money back after that, no offence to her dancing skills.

  • @DuskChimera "Offence" is spelled "offense", with an "s", dearie. :)

  • @willytillyfilly I think that might be the British way of spelling it.

  • Is this piece is a much shorter representation of "Sagi Musume" or something?

  • @xxRitsuandSoubixx It looks like it...

  • ¨woow nice dancing

  • When people say the dance was messy, isn't it supposed to be quite wild and untamed? It represents her grief and anger, carefully structured dancing would never portray that properly.

  • lol...mameha is shorter than chiyo/sayuri.

  • Now THAT is contemporary dance

  • Hey, does any one know what the name of the music the girl danced. Is nice. Man, now that is nice dancing!!

  • @Malafky look up memoirs of a geisha soundtrack

  • i want those kimono soo badly.

  • jesus f'ing christ! WERE THOSE PEACOCKS?!

  • shit she looked like she was have a heart attack when she was dance it scared me for a bit o.o

  • with her long hair i was thinking of the grudge at that moment

  • Seriously her dance....epic fail it is a kabuki dance but its soooo wrong...OMG did she trip on something...WOW because it looks like she did LOL

  • so wait these guys had wives but they were allowed to cheat? perplexed.....

  • I guess that's where we got the idea of the "soda" shoes!? Lol.

  • when I was watching this the numbers viewed were 178,571. 1+7=8 and 5+7=12 but there's no 2

  • I don't understand the snow dance, it shows conflict and has meaning, but how is that seen as a turn-on? (serious question, btw.)

  • @missprisss

Only people in the past would get turned on lol
