The shear scale and max speed of the stars in our galaxy means that our position in the milky way cant possibly change significantly in just a few years.

It takes millions of years for a solar system to move through a galaxy not 2 or three. So the movement of a few years is so small its not even measurable.

it's funny they got a "Near-Earth" object scientist to quote about the Mayan calendar and the sunspot cycle. I am not questioning his data. If you go to the website listed at the end of this video, you can track the asteroid "Apophis," and it will be within 0.01AU of earth on Dec. 21, 2012. I wrote NASA's PR and JPL's youtube, and they told me nothing to worry about. Nonetheless, one has to wonder. PEACE! - Jon

Yes, but the data for Apophis has shown that the chance for an Earth impact in 2036 (not 2012 n00b) is 1 in 250,000.

yes, I am actually aware of the (constantly revised) lack of likelihood for a collision in 2036. However, 0.01 AU in 2012 does not come anywhere close to implying an IMPACT. It is simply an odd coincidence of measurements on that date. PEACE. - Jon

No worries in 2012. Apophis will be at .101 AU from Earth on Dec. 21, 2012. That's about 15,000,000 km or 39 lunar distances. If you look at the asteroid close approach table (click on the first link under "more info" and click on "close approaches" tab) you'll see two asteroids of similar or larger size (250m) passed Earth this week at closer distances. 2009 TA1 passed at 37 lunar distances on 11/9 and 2009 UP1 went by at 29.5 LD on 11/11. All is well! The site also lists future approaches.
