Because you need a some effects from machine, which create an echo. In this version, that equipment has failed and Freddie must have to do himself. In studio, there's been a lot of voices and it was easier to do it. The same thing like medium part of Bohemian Rhapsody.

I remember when this song was reviewed as Queen's attempt to imitate Led Zep, but seriously, no way Robert Plant could have even tried to do half of the vocals on this song.
