  • What a great composition by OVK. Aruna Sairam has sung how Oothukadu Brothers use to sing.

  • pardon me what u mean by oothukadu "brothers"

  • @Oohviyakiruki Oothukadu Brothers are the direct desendants of Oothukadu venkata subaiyer. They are Sri.K.Rajagopalan and Sri.K.Muthukrishnan and are no more.

  • it's just ultra cool carnatrix 'ip 'op!

  • carnaticopia, isnt it 'KALiya nartanam'???? the serpent KAliya on which sreekrishna performed nartanam?? if i am wrong what is KALINga??

  • Good point. The composer, Venkatasubbaiyar, called the composition Kalinga nartanam. Lord Krishna's legend is from Mathura (North India). My guess is, the verbal/written Tamil texts at the time referred to the snake Kaliya, as Kalinga. Anyone else with a better answer?

  • Agree w/ carnaticopia.. Tamil has frequently used its own "mozhi" (language) to adapt terminology that is imoported...case in point being Kalinga Natanam in Tamil referring to Kaliya Nartanam....this slight adaptation gives it the feel of inclusiveness...of it being"our" own in Tamil, with affection...

  • Kalinga is the old name for Orissa. In tamil war poem named Kalingathu Parani , Kalinga was conquered by the Cholas. I came to know this meaning from that.

  • @sreedharansree Yes, in Tamil, the serpent is kALinga.

  • @sreedharansree kaliyaa is the local name of the serpent "kalinga". the original name in sanskrit is "kalinga" only .

  • Thank you for making these videos available. There is no other way for me access these events otherwise.

Amazing performance! Mrithangam is quite excellent!

  • Hey Carnaticopia,

A small suggestion: Could you add annotations showing paccavadyam members and VIP audience.

    Just a thought!

    Ashwin

  • Hi Ashwin, Good idea to label/identify accompanists. I shall do so time permitting. However, I am not so much in favour of discriminating audience members as VIP and otherwise. Regards and thanks for the suggestion.
