Like many great artists; based musically, artistically or in literature, Syd Barrett was not fully appreciated for his talent until much later. Beautiful man, beautiful music.
He was gifted with the ability to see past the veil that shrouds the perceptions we experience and draw our truths from. He was not the type of person who could comprehend greed and corruption as a way to promote humanity and was tormented by it to the point that he decided to unwittingly percolate his gray matter with Lysergic until it didn't matter anymore. I'll bet it was a lot of fun.
Syd was not crazy. He had Asperger's Syndrome. Unfortunately, this little known social and learning disorder was completely and ENTIRELY unknown back then and is barely known now. The psychotropic drugs that he took (and especially in the amounts that he took them in) would have completely set off any person as brilliant as he who had an autism spectrum disorder. Because so few people knew or even know how to care for "Aspies" so very many beautiful minds end up going the way of beautiful Syd.
I don't know what "an indigo child" was or is but point is, he was not crazy. Everyone wants to say that he was so creative and "went insane" like MKFaizi there and such but he absolutely was not. He was a tremendous genius but because of Asperger's Syndrome he could not handle the emotionally demanding pressures of his life and began to become reclusive and angry with himself. My ex-fiance is an Aspie but also a creative genius like Syd. They're VERY emotionally delicate people but NOT crazy.
@valaurwen, I know what you are saying, but somehow I am still not convinced by the voluminous descriptions of Asperger's on the net. I would prefer to think of them as people gifted with special gifts, not someone with some weaknesses. But people have not respect for gifts. To understand Syd in those days, his mates just had to be a lil bit more NUMAN and MATURE than they were. Not contradicting you, just musing... Syd seems to be born well ahead of his time, but will be loved at all times.
Ahead of his time, yes. Flawed? Yes. I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to see him as someone with weaknesses. Everyone has them. He was no god, he was "only a person". People who refused to see his weaknesses are the same sorts that almost destroyed him. They knew he was gifted, outgoing, mature and brilliant but refused to realize that he was a sensitive and delicate PERSON. Aspies can't handle emotional pressure well at all and it can destroy them but Barrett survived well in his own way.
@valaurwen why would you assume I see him as a godly one, lollers. That would be the stupidest thing to do to a fellow human being ) I just don't see his synaesthesia and other characteristics as weaknesses. Rare gifts, yes. Weakness - no. And yes, he was a human. In his own way.
Could be -- Aspergers or not. What strikes me is how regimented things are now -- so little room for original thought or freedom to think. It is fortunate that Syd was a sixties young man. At least then there was some room for him. Now you have to fit some kind of mold -- you have to be ADHD or Aspergers or this or that. You CANNOT be creative because originality/creativity is a disease. Just like that.
Who the hell said creativity was a disease? The point his family is making is that he was not insane he simply suffered from Asperger's Syndrome. That is a VERY serious disorder because it makes it hard for people to function emotionally and their behavior can be erratic many times which allows ppl to call them "crazy". Point is Syd was an absolute genius and was NOT crazy. Say whatever the hell you want but he wasn't.
You've no idea how much he breaks my heart. Hiding himself and his amazingly beautiful mind away. Brilliantly lost to everyone but himself and far from Crazy.
@valaurw This man was a real Star, when he died he couldn't understand what was already turning this world into a nonsense, I remember I had trouble looking at the news and all then, but I didn't know about the NWO! Syd Barrett IS the original Pink Floyd, what an Artist. We owe him a lot, but nobody has any right to use his work, input, Talent to come out with a song for him such as "Hello, Is There Anybody Out There?" THAT'S DISRESPECT, aimed to make him feel bad, but he knew this, was no fool.
I can just imagine syd walking down the street humming this song and dancing!!! at least that's what i do :) I love being high on air !!!!!!!!!!! And no one in the land matters!!!!!

A true to one's self musical genius , if you play music and create it all your own style and rhythm ,
daring to break the norm and branch off with what's in your heart and head you can't go wrong , much like what Syd Barrett exactly did

Syd just happened to be in a groundbreaking band at the centre of a rapidly emerging scene before he made acoustic recordings like this.
