When you delete files from the recycle bin, all references to the data are deleted. So the information is still there, but you can't access it. There is software to retrieve the 'deleted' files. To actually wipe the bit making up the file, you should defragment your harddrive.

when you delete things from the recycle bin it doesnt go anywhere, it just adds something at the beginning so your pc wont recognise it..... but there are programs to retrieve them :D good for getting porn back after you have split up with the missus

yes and no. when you empty the bin the files are still on the hard drive. the computer now sees the space where the files were as empty and when you save something new it will overwrite that free space. so alot of the time you can use software to recover 'deleted' files. its just a faster way of deleting stuff as opposed to actually deleting it.

As far as I know, I think it just gets compressed and locked away in the hard drive. There only two ways I know how to delete a file for good. You can format the drive (which may leave traces of the file). Or physically smash your hard drive so it can no longer be used.

Because if you know what you're doing in command prompt you can recover any file that's been lost. And this isn't just on windows, Mac has a command console too, I think it's just a little harder to find.

Actually, the file only stays on the hard drive when you first delete it. The OS tells you it's gone (even though it's not) and updates the system to display that space as being free. However, the space is then ready to be overwritten, so eventually it will not be possible to get the file back. You see, every byte is either ON or OFF, so deleteing is an illusion.

Also, what you said about command prompt is untrue. It's simply a Dos-based system that runs within Windows. It's not magical :P
