they should get rid of all those suit records. Biedermann is nowhere near as good as thorpe. Just because he had the Arena X-Glide doesn't mean he deserves the world record.
@silviagelain Actually that's half right. Biedermann Wore the Arena X-glide suit, which one upped Speedo's LZR, and broke both Phelps's and Thorpe's records.
First, doing some search reveals that Thorpe *could have* branched out and competed in non-freestyle events, like the 200 IM and backstroke. He proved it in the 200 medley at the 2003 World Champs. Maybe he could have been the first "Phelps" in that regard.
Second, you have Ryan Lochte, who is about as good all-around as Phelps, and who would have held that role if Phelps were not around. In fact, at present time, he *is* the best overall swimmer.
Let's set the record straight. Phelps is the best all-around swimmer of all time - even breaking Thorpe's record in the 200m free. That's a fact that cannot be disputed, whether you like Phelps or not.
However, Thorpe is the best middle-distance freestyle swimmer to date, and the *most elegant* and graceful swimmer in terms of his swimming style. He also appears to be more personable and likable outside the pool.

@JKeen177 These guys are super human. Look at world class track sprinters, NHL hockey players, NBA guys, Albert Puljos. They are all freaks of nature ( Lance Armstrong also )
I remember watching this when I was so young. I couldn't get my head round how he could just keep going. And hey, 2 British swimmers in a world class final!!!
one more stroke and thorpe would have done it. he was and is swimming's michael jordan, just a pure killer. phelps has freakish talent and size, but thorpe had the ttechnique.
Yep...I agree...Park will own this event for the next 3 years. He is definitely the fastest of the post suit era. Phelps has really been struggling and Park has really turned in some great times. I don't think they will break the record in 2012..the suit era was just too fast.
he has most efficient strokes in the world, and his strokes is really long, u can see, under water for long time because there is an extending time there(i feel so) , and stay in the air very short time, he keeps a hand infront of him all the time(helps to raise the other side should i think) . now people like zhang lin, biederman all mimic this.
also, he engaged his foot more than other player. i think the video suite of thorpe shows everything.
Thorpe averaging 29 strokes per length there. First length was 27 and the last two were 31 each. Counting my strokes at long course this morning and swimming an easy pace couldnt do lower than 35! How does he do it????
maybe thorpe deserves this world record, maybe. biedermann is a good swimmer. he put in the hard work over the summer. its not like he sat on the wall and did nothing. no, he did the hard work. and when you work extremely hard, have a good taper, and add a super suit on top of that, he is going to swim fast. and he did
to the london olympic commitee just put aside the 100,200,400 metre gold medals and engrave the name ian thorpe on them right now because the results are set in stone (or gold i guess) cheers.
I had the adidas Jet concept, then had a jaked in 09. believe me, they were not the same...not at all. Thorpe was simply a god when he was swimming the 400m freestyle... his technique is just superb.
everyone is talking about beidermann and his suit but thorpe's suit covers his arms. dont get me wrong i hate biedermann, but thorpe had a suit advantage as well
@qwaep Yeah, but it didn't have the high-tech material the x-glide has. Without that suit, Biedermann is nothing. The world record is still 3:40.08, and I doubt anyone will come close to that for a long time.
@qwaep Yeah, but it didn't have the high-tech material the x-glide has. Without that suit, Biedermann is nothing. The world record is still 3:40.08, and I doubt anyone will come close to that for a long time.
@sdh106 Biedermann in european championship in Budapest this year did 3.46 and he arrived second... (remember that thorpe did this time when he was 15) biedermann without the x-glide can't do anything -.- Thorpe is the true King of 400 freestyle
listen pal, that adidas suit was never banned! the new suit are going to be ok!? it is NOT the same. Ian thorpe broke a couple a wr without a suit! and he was 16 or 17 !!! anyway, at that time anyone could have worn that suit. now, you have biederman, who went from 1.45 to 1.42 in one year!!! that's bullshit!! y the fucking suit that made him accomplish that!
I dont think you understood what i ment. Just saying look it up. And i didnt say that the suit was better or just as good. And id you catch that i was talking about Ian Thorpe's suit?...
No I don't mean he's inventing a new way to swim freestyle, I'm simply saying he's changing his technique to suit 100 meter sprinting as oppose to 200 or 400. I've noticed he's using a more straight arm pull as of late. Anyway, back to the point of the video, Thorpe is fucking whopper!
@kabuCee er no. phelps. thorpe probably the greatest freestyler, near perfect technique. but as an all round swimmer, phelps is undeniably the greatest in history
Ah i wouldn't be so sure to say that. Underwater is mainly where it counts, and Thorpe has a serious pull and catch in that case. Plus dives can always be improved. Anyway, on a different matter, i reckon Phelps is gonna become the 100 free world record holder reasonably soon. Apparently he's currently working on a new sprint technique on freestyle.
Well, I heard Phelps' "new sprint technique" isn't true, it was just to get attention, (that's what I heard...) as a swimmer myself it would be great if there is a new technique on freestyle!
There's this one guy who swims freestyle like a backstroke...forgot his name though. He's famous of course - not sure if he swam in the olympics but he very well could have.
And about Biederman in the 400 freestyle... I'd like to see him pull off a 3:40 without a high tech suit. However he is a complete beast in 200 free, seriously!
Backstroke goes to Aaron Peirsol without a doubt. Thorpe's technique is by far the best we'll see for a long time in middle distance freestyling. I'm annoyed he retired 4 years ago, I thought he could of defintely been something over 100 meters, even up there with Bernard and Cielo now.
i think he could have got gold in the 200 and 400 but probably not the 100. he doesnt have much of a good sprint technique, he'd have to rely purely on his kick, which is insane but i think his arms just wouldn't let him beat Cielo. also, his dive needs to be better for a sprint, im not sayin hes bad, he could be top 3 in the world but he would never win an olympic gold over 100
First of all...Biedermann sucks ass! I'm Phelps fan, but when it comes to Freestyle, Thorpe has the best technique. Look at it, his strokes are so smooth..damn, i tried it and its hard. So yep, Freestyle goes to Thorpe, Fly goes to Phelps, Breast goes to Kitajima, and Back...dont know, and dont like lol.
Awful finish. And he didn't even do underwater kicks. Yet, such an AMAZING time. I just wonder how faster he could've gone if he had improved those little things. 3:38? Who knows.
come on guys!!!! it's imposible to get a 3: 40 in a year after having swum 3: 46 !!!!! check out biederman in beijing in the 200 finals....the 400 he wasn't even in the finals!!!!! and pay attention to thorpie GLIDING in the final touch, i mean, what if he had taken another stroke more? huh? the record would have been 3: 39 something!!!!!! so, face the facts,,,,,,biederman is just a geek using a technology enhanced suit.....THAT IS IT!!!!
i know. thorpe messed it up with that glide. they were talking about him going under 3.40 but he blew it on that stroke. if he had gone under 3.40 his record would still stand today. and with the suits now back to what they were, the record could has lasted another 5 years at least.
Beiderman was only 0.01 seconds under Ian Thorpes record WITH the arena x-glide suity , which i believe would take off approximately 3 and a half seconds, for the suit creates bouyancy and the suit makes it so that you get tired less easy. Thorpe is SOO much better than Beiderman. Beiderman is nothing. THORPE is the 400 free champion.
Yeah. Biedermann won the world champs. He fucking sucks. He can barely swim. WTF amirite?
oh FYI. Polyurathane (the stuff also in the LZR) is buoyant. Obviously that won't me anything to you though because apparantly it's not socially acceptable for someone who's not Phelps to win.
The LZR is 20% polyurthane and the ARENA suit is 100% . BIG DIFFERENE? I THINK SO!
and i never said he sucks and he can barely swim
but im just saying
you dont take of 6 seconds in Eleven months when you are at Olympic level in a 400. And the 400 has nothing to do with phelps, are u dumb? learn a thing or two about swimming before you try and prove a point. But why listen now, just wait till the next compeititon with beiderman in a jammer. let the swimming talk!
ok buddy, its the internet grammer isnt that nessecary. and what are you talking about. I never sad Beidermann made a mistake but all im saying is he isnt an outstanding swimmer. And the suit makes a huge difference and no the LZR is 20% if you knew anything. And the LZR was 20% so it wasnt THAT much of a difference, it was a difference but not a large one. And Thorpe took a LONG time to get from 3:43 to 3:40 and he is a LEGEND. Beidermann is NOT A LEGEND.
When I say Biedermann's mistake I mean that the swimming community takes credit away from him. Had Phelps swum those times, there wouldn't be any argument.
In any case, I don't think that time taken to drop ___ seconds is a relevant argument because ultimately the world record is 3:40.07 even if many people wish it wasn't.
He can barely swim? That's down right hilarious. There world class athletes. Best in the world. 11 months is a lot of time. Improving your technique can make a huge difference. Beidermann will still be great next year. The suit doesn't make any difference. It's always the swimmer.
ight buddy. i never said he can barley swim. CLEARLY he has talent obviously. but to take off that amount of time in 11 months at an olympic level is INSANE
@MitchSwimming this year we are gonna see the real truth. biderman in 2009 : 3,40,07 . this year with the new short suits i,m sure he is gonna be about 3,45,00 , about 5 seconds over the time of last year... popov and thorpe are the greatest...
@MitchSwimming mitch so true man beiderman beating phelps was further prove of the swimsuit he was using no one beiderman can beat this record truly this early no way
hahaha, I agree, I agree. Thorpe was the better swimmer. However, no slight to Biederman. Everyone in Rome had those suits, so Biederman was the best of 2009.
@MitchSwimming I completely agree with you. Only 1 100th better despite wearing a suit that makes you go around 0.50 seconds faster per 50? Biedermann's "record" is bullshit.
@MitchSwimming You must still take note that Ian Thorpe had a true FULL (having his full arms covered) body suite on when he swam which was soon made illegal. As I do think Thorpe was faster, the suites did not make that great of a difference. They kind of cancelled out.
@MitchSwimming I agree with you. He would not have broken the record if he didn't have the suit. I'm not a fan of Beiderman's but I think he's going to better that time by a lot considering how much time he has dropped in just the last 2 years.
maybe yea Phelps is better...but Biedermann's swimsuit's so much more advanced but only beat the record by a split. Biedermann himself mentioned that the swim suit saves at least 2 seconds
you clearly don't understand nothing of swimming, EVERYONE uses the lazer suit, or the new arena x-glide, which is better, and sometimes phelps only uses the legskin.

Two things that leave you saying hmm...

That's a fact that cannot be disputed, whether you like Phelps or not.

adamlewis934 2 years ago
First of all...Biedermann sucks ass! I'm Phelps fan, but when it comes to Freestyle, Thorpe has the best technique. Look at it, his strokes are so smooth..damn, i tried it and its hard. So yep, Freestyle goes to Thorpe, Fly goes to Phelps, Breast goes to Kitajima, and Back...dont know, and dont like lol.
ChenChen713 2 years ago 5
you are probably right, but we will see in London, if Biedermann sucks ass at all.
sushiquak88 1 year ago
Awful finish. And he didn't even do underwater kicks. Yet, such an AMAZING time. I just wonder how faster he could've gone if he had improved those little things. 3:38? Who knows.
Greatest freestyler ever, hands down.
macdicas 2 years ago 18
@macdicas just imagine him in a lzr or an x-glide he could've gone 3 35 imo
splitkostanjeuma 9 months ago
come on guys!!!! it's imposible to get a 3: 40 in a year after having swum 3: 46 !!!!! check out biederman in beijing in the 200 finals....the 400 he wasn't even in the finals!!!!! and pay attention to thorpie GLIDING in the final touch, i mean, what if he had taken another stroke more? huh? the record would have been 3: 39 something!!!!!! so, face the facts,,,,,,biederman is just a geek using a technology enhanced suit.....THAT IS IT!!!!
martinkenadams 2 years ago
i know. thorpe messed it up with that glide. they were talking about him going under 3.40 but he blew it on that stroke. if he had gone under 3.40 his record would still stand today. and with the suits now back to what they were, the record could has lasted another 5 years at least.
adamlewis934 2 years ago
Why did Ian Thorpe stop swimming at the peak of his career and suddenly gain 20kg of fat?
Any takers?

can somebody tell me ian thorpes splits for this race?

damn hes ending is bad :S
noooooo damn i think he would still bee best if he had fixed it
kris533d 2 years ago
The record still stands as 3:40.08 in my mind.
MitchSwimming 2 years ago 65
just 3.5 seconds? beidermann's best before the olympics was 3:48 now its 3:40
wolfdog45 2 years ago
his best was actually 3:46.00
but still to take off 6 seconds in one year is unheard of. hes not a legend hes lamme
MitchSwimming 2 years ago
Yeah. Biedermann won the world champs. He fucking sucks. He can barely swim. WTF amirite?
oh FYI. Polyurathane (the stuff also in the LZR) is buoyant. Obviously that won't me anything to you though because apparantly it's not socially acceptable for someone who's not Phelps to win.
staticclean 2 years ago 2
wow your an idiot!!!!!!!!!!
MitchSwimming 2 years ago
1. Learn grammar.
2. Only one exclamation mark is needed at a time!
3. Biedermann's only mistake was beating people for whom it was socially acceptable to win.
4. What would you know about taking off time at the olympic level? Just because it's not the norm doesn't mean that it's not possible.
5. LZR is actually 50%
6. Nobody pestered Phelps about his times being swum in a LZR.
7. The swimming always did the talking.
staticclean 2 years ago
ok buddy, its the internet grammer isnt that nessecary. and what are you talking about.
MitchSwimming 2 years ago
When I say Biedermann's mistake I mean that the swimming community takes credit away from him. Had Phelps swum those times, there wouldn't be any argument.
In any case, I don't think that time taken to drop ___ seconds is a relevant argument because ultimately the world record is 3:40.07 even if many people wish it wasn't.
staticclean 2 years ago
I know the OFFICIAL world record is 3:40.07
but the best preformer and the best swim in the 400m freestyle was Ian Thorpe's 3:40.08
MitchSwimming 2 years ago 2
He can barely swim? That's down right hilarious. There world class athletes. Best in the world. 11 months is a lot of time. Improving your technique can make a huge difference. Beidermann will still be great next year. The suit doesn't make any difference. It's always the swimmer.
ps2monster 2 years ago
ight buddy. i never said he can barley swim. CLEARLY he has talent obviously. but to take off that amount of time in 11 months at an olympic level is INSANE
MitchSwimming 2 years ago
i believe the lzr is 50%, and the x-glide is 80%
mc1703 2 years ago
no, lzr is 20 xglide is 100

i couldnt agree more. that record shoyld be taken away from beiderman. all the records in the new suits should be
mjaimee435 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming i totally agree with u , Thorpey is the man!!
davidfrgs 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming this year we are gonna see the real truth. biderman in 2009 : 3,40,07 . this year with the new short suits i,m sure he is gonna be about 3,45,00 , about 5 seconds over the time of last year... popov and thorpe are the greatest...
gusyrocks 1 year ago
@gusyrocks i agree popov, thorpe, hackett, phelps are my favourite swimmers Biedermann and Mellouli are fruads!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DarthMuse 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming no doubt thorpe will always be the worlds best 400m freestyler and possibly 200 meter freestyler
DSchiebs 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming mitch so true man beiderman beating phelps was further prove of the swimsuit he was using no one beiderman can beat this record truly this early no way
DarthMuse 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming
hahaha, I agree, I agree. Thorpe was the better swimmer. However, no slight to Biederman. Everyone in Rome had those suits, so Biederman was the best of 2009.
TheBradleyC4 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming I completely agree with you. Only 1 100th better despite wearing a suit that makes you go around 0.50 seconds faster per 50? Biedermann's "record" is bullshit.
luanswan2002 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming I love Ian's technque!!! That's amazing!!!
Tavola91 1 year ago 12
@MitchSwimming You must still take note that Ian Thorpe had a true FULL (having his full arms covered) body suite on when he swam which was soon made illegal. As I do think Thorpe was faster, the suites did not make that great of a difference. They kind of cancelled out.
123sheepboy 1 year ago
@123sheepboy
and u realise, that his suit was not made like the ones that were made last year... different material.
get ur facts right ye
laza4liverpool 1 year ago
@MitchSwimming I agree with you. He would not have broken the record if he didn't have the suit. I'm not a fan of Beiderman's but I think he's going to better that time by a lot considering how much time he has dropped in just the last 2 years.

But in my mind Thorpe still holds the record! :)
Schlunzen 2 years ago
yeah, biedermann just swam a hundredth better than thorpe, so it's almost thorpe's time. biedermann shouldn't have broken this record.
masquemta 2 years ago 3
Yeah I also think Thorpe is better. And Biedermann said that the suit gave him 2 seconds. But the fact is that it counts as a new world record.

best swimmer ever? fuck off... Phelps is way better. And biedermann just got 3.40.07. new WR.
masquemta 2 years ago
maybe yea Phelps is better...but Biedermann's swimsuit's so much more advanced but only beat the record by a split. Biedermann himself mentioned that the swim suit saves at least 2 seconds
FU0C0 2 years ago 2
phelps is crap he use the lazer swim suit XD. And when he does n't he just average like everyone else.
r0ly345 2 years ago
you clearly don't understand nothing of swimming, EVERYONE uses the lazer suit, or the new arena x-glide, which is better, and sometimes phelps only uses the legskin.
masquemta 2 years ago 2
thorpe used a adidas swimsuits
DarthMuse 2 years ago
i'm not talking about thorpe, i'm talking about the nowadays swimmers.
masquemta 2 years ago
Paul Biedermann from Germany have now beaten this record!
The new record is 3.40.07.
1/100 second :O
Schlunzen 2 years ago
Just got beat, It's becoming all about the suits at the moment though. Should be better next year when they get limited/banned.
MrJondoe15 2 years ago
The real WR should be 3:41.83 for the 99 Pan Pacs - done in trunks.
