My old man was a Hellcat, Corsair and C-47 mechanic in a sister unit to the Black Sheep in VMF-212. He introduced me to Boyington in the late 70's. He was very much a gentleman and chatted with us for nearly half an hour. This show influenced me to earn my pilot's license.
I had the great honor of meeting Major Boyington in the mid 80's at an airshow, he was there as a spectator and my aunt an I sat with him for most of the show.
It was in this the making of this show that Elvis Presley died. The show was stopped for the day out of respect for Red West and Robert Conrad. Both "friends" of Elvis.
That's Red West playing Sgt. Micklin. He worked for a long time as one of Elvis Presley's bodyguards, and eventually got fired for being too rough with aggressive fans. Then he went to work as a hollywood movie stunt man, and worked as a stunt man with Robert Conrad in (the original) Wild Wild West.
(PS-F15Eaglejet, I think you've got the date wrong. I think this must have aired in 1977 or 78. :)

You mean 1977, not 1967.

A great show, but the Japanese would never sail a carrier into the slot and then leave it there for a few days lol

I became a fan of the Corsair thanks to this show. Such an elegant aircraft, and a great show to boot.

Wow, what a guy this sergeant. Loved every episode with him. Look at the carrier at 40:57, that's not a WWII flattop.

Red West was on Memphis Beat last week as the killer of Dwight Hendricks(Jason Lee) dad. Red is looking pretty rough. Of course that comed with age..

What happened to Gutterman? Noticed he wasn't part of crew since season 2 started.
