  • I hope every one had a Blessed Thanksgiving. Love this song. Alice's Restaurant, Noon Every Thanksgiving Day on TK99 Syracuse NY.

  • I remember being about 6 years old and my dad playing this. My little sisters and I would jump up and down and yell "Kill! Kill!" whenever that part came around on the guitar. We all thought that was just about the funniest thing ever. Too bad YouTube wasn't around then.

  • It was shot at the Guthrie center (formerly the church Arlo took the garbage out of) in Housatonic, Massachusetts.

  • Happy Turkey Day!

  • It's not Thanksgiving until you hear this song!

  • @hammondtalent yeah your right!

  • @hammondtalent You haven't had a life until you hear this song!

  • Read his reasoning for being a registered republican on wikipedia. It's enlightening. I think it's kind of like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, but to each his own.

  • 76 people are still sitting on the "Group W" bench.

  • Rest in peace david enoch krumm..we miss ya..sorta lol..wink wink

  • My dad used to listen to this mans CD all the time, I remember listening to this and The motocycle song, great music.

  • Patriotic Republican Veterans for of Alice's Restaurant!

    I love you Arlo Guthrie!

  • I live near Woodstock and am of Arlo's generation, lucky me. Back then we really believed in peace and love and changing the world. Everything was possible for us, the golden children of the WWI heros. We were given everything money could by, and the best of everything. We had the material things but longed for something greater, changing the world. The song brings me back to that glorious innocent time, never to return.

  • This song has been a Thanksgiving Day tradition in my home for 30 years, that's 30 years ago this Thanksgiving.

I think we all encounter an "Alice's Restaurant" throughout our lives, I know I have. You can either laugh about it or cry, I choose to laugh. Do you believe that a song can change the world? Even if its just one person at a time in a seemingly insignificant way? This is that song for me.

  • her majestys a pretty nice girl but she doesnt have a lot to say

    (dum dum dum)

but she doesn't have a lot to say

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl

but she changes from day to day

I want to tell her that I love her a lot

But I gotta get a belly full of wine

Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl

Someday I'm going to make her mine, oh yeah,

Someday I'm going to make her mine.

  • Can't we just like Arlo regardless of our politics? I'm as conservative as they come and I have always considered Arlo a pretty cool guy. That's the country's problem now, no intelligent, civil, discourse. And this song is a true story. He was turned down for the draft for a conviction for littering.

  • THIS IS AWESOME

  • Love this song. Drive my wife nuts because I memorized the whole song in 1970 and can sing it still, comlete with the 1/2 page paragraph on the back of the 8 by 10 glossy photoghraphs with the circles and the arrows. And a tipical case of American Blind Justice!

  • 75 people don't like your kind. And they're going to send your fingerprints off to Washington.

  • @doggonemess1 what kind??????

  • @rosemarie443 It's a joke. From the song. About the 'dislike' votes for this video. It's funny.

  • @doggonemess1 hey i don't care i play song when i have to go to the bathroom, and to get a cup of coffee, because it is so long.

  • a love a classic song with a story behind it

  • 75 people, apparently did NOT get anything they wanted in Alice's Restaurant.

  • ttttthhhhhaaaaannnnkkkkgggiiivvviiinnnnggg

  • Man, I would like this song if I didn't have to do a English assignment on it after I watch it.

  • I was bored with the movie and didn't really dig the song back in the day BUT now that I'm looking back I love it== ah, sweet youth! He still has GREAT hair!!

  • Watching on Netflix right now ;) love arlo!!

  • Dublin's Olympia Theatre, 1989, aah, friend's dad was the promoter, went backstage to say hi; he was busy meditating surrounded by flowers; happy days

  • big yellow joint big yellow joint... i'll see you down at the big yellow joint!

  • one of my best memories of all time was seeing Arlo for the first time and never had heard the song before in my life. I had gone to see the Further Festival and came away with one of the best experiences I have had at a show.

  • I found this and brought me into a time warp! Thanks!!!!!

  • Fantastic Arlo!!!!

  • I really hope he lives to sing the 50th anniversary of these events...

  • @nyyNYR2094 GTFO now.

  • Big yella joint. Big yella joint. I'll meet you down at the big yella joint!

  • would i rather go to the most amazing party every or become stranded on an island with only ipod with only this song on it, i think you know the answer

  • One of his best EVER!

  • I deliver to Mr. Guthrie's house about once a week and him and his family are the nicest people I have met in a very long time. If more people in the world were like them, there wouldn't be any troubles in teh world at all.

  • who ever put dislike is a mean SOB because arlo guthrie is the coolist singer of all time!!!!

  • @jguth3 Lol I'm 16

  • I heard this song for the first time when I was quite a young man (40 years ago..) and started to learn it by heart right away...and still I just have to play the turn-around on my guitar to start smiling. And this song made me start thinking a little more critical about this world, too. That´s what great art should be like.

  • Why do we have to be at each other's necks about his political views? Why can't we just love and accept each other while we enjoy the music?!

  • @mrjokioo

Ahhh, an adult in the room. Thank you for your comment!!!!

    Folkslinger (AG) says it all!

  • @mrjokioo the song itself is EXPRESSLY political! But if you sing the chorus when someone reaches for your neck, old Arlo will surely smile :-)

  • @mrjokioo u sound like a hippie

  • I wish everybody was like him. we would have peace, and good music.

  • What is a Ron Paul conservative doing in Madison WI supporting the Unions? Don't believe everything you read in the wiki articles. lol

  • @jguth3 Representin That Shit....!!!

  • That never gets old

  • Okay yea, Sure I remember the whole story all 18 min. of it. But the dang fool DJ at our local karaoke outfit wanted to know if I would kill about 20 min. and do the whole damn thing. Naturally I declined and said "nope, maybe next time". Especially since I sang Don McClains version of "American Pie" in the previous rotation ( I still can't figure out why he called it "American Pie" when it's got nothin to do with pie).

  • I totally love this, Go Arlo. Go Arlo. you are a wee rebel, and we all love a rebel. xx

  • My Journalism teacher played this all the time for us back when I was in High school(almost 30 years ago). Love the end('cepting Alice)

  • you see the DJ's put this song on when they have to get coffee, go to the bathroom, or any other things that takes only 15 min. to do

  • Slippery floor.

    Anti Slip Protection.

    Chris Kalinowski

  • big yella joint big yella joint, i'll meet ya down at the big yella joint

  • Big yellow joint!!!

  • @latka101 he is a legend, and this song is very special to a lot of people. the guthries are storytelling performers, and today's culture is more than likely too ADD to really appreciate them. anyhow, there's plenty of other songs in the world, find one you like and be happy! :)

  • I grew up with this song and as tradition we listen to it for Thanksgiving. He is a local artist in my area and so the story of the song took place in the towns I grew up in. Thank you Arlo for providing a family tradition (that will drive my hard rock oriented b/f to insanity).

  • @latka101 Oh boy, I bet you done caught hell on that comment. My first thought was to ask if you were a communist. But then I got to thinkin' "Aw shucks he's just havin' one of those days". I'm sure you're a big fan of old school music and probably even attended a piano bar (at least once). If not I suggest you listen to some death metal or crank up some gangster rap and enjoy yourself (no offence).

  • He looks tired, in the true sence of the word, of playing this song over and over to pay the bills if you ask me. Just a fellow musician's point of view.

  • great

  • going to see arlo this august at the philly folk fest in pa cant freakin wait

  • one in a milion!!!!

  • What's really interesting about Arlo and Alice's Restaurant is that Arlo is actually a Fox News conservative.

  • @JohnArcher30DC

    Based on what????

  • @jguth3 Its on Wikipedia so it must be true.

  • @jguth3 read his bio. he used to be a lefty from 60's-80's but then turned towards the right. his wiki article states he supports ron paul, who is a libertarian-conservative.

  • @jguth3 He endorsed Ron Paul in 2008 he leanings are more Libertarian than Republican.

  • @rong7676 I would certainly support ANY candidate who would get us out of these stupid wars we've been living and dying with. On this issue alone (as well as some others), Dr. Paul has it right in my book, whereas President Obama as well as all the Republicans running against him looking like flunkies of the military industrial complex.

  • @JohnArcher30DC HUH???

  • @JohnArcher30DC No he isn't. He's a Republican and supporter of Ron Paul, but he's also pro-union and all that. I'd guess he's probably something like Bill Maher based on what I just read online about this.

  • @JohnArcher30DC He's a republican libertarian, big supporter of Ron Paul.

  • @JohnArcher30DC

I find that hard to believe based on his blog posts on ArloNet

  • I'm a what? Fox actually once asked me on to be interviewed, and they uninvited me as soon as I said 'sure!" I guess that in the minds of some people 'a rose by any other name' would smell more conservative. If it weren't so stupid, it'd be pretty funny. Sometimes you have to see the humor in these circumstances. I know I'm trying to. As JGuth3 noted, 'don't believe everything you read.'

  • @JohnArcher30DC

Me a Fox News Conservative? I've never been on Fox News (or any news), and to my knowledge, no one at Fox has ever asked me my opinion on anything. Come to think of it, I'd have a lot of fun :)

  • @Folkslinger Gonna see you in providence! Super excited!!!!!

  • I've seen Arlo at least 10 times, he's a great story teller and he can play a lot of instruments, back in '70 or '71 in Central Park he broke into Alice's Restaurant, and we all went nuts, but he didn't play it, he sang another song to the same tune, called

"The Golden Rainbow Roach " which he never recorded. Nixon was president at the time, the song was hysterical...about all the heads in Nixon's cabinet and who had a roach clip..great memories seeing this post. Thank You...

  • when did he get old?

  • @whosCats - June 4, 1981. He commented in Time magazine it happened in a restroom at a Holiday Inn just before he was scheduled to play a show to an auto insurance convention in Meridian, Mississippi. He said "When I went in to the can I was young, but when I came out 10 minutes later I realized I was now an old man." He said he changed the playlist that night to honor the event.

  • 71 people haven't heard this before and they are don't have a clue

  • hey what can i get in alice's restarant

  • @RogueHashashin anything you want :P

  • It takes an incredible memory to sing this long song without missing a single word. I couldn't sing three lines without flubbing, haha

  • I love this song and Arlo. Peace!

  • Ok I guess it's one of those "you had to be there" kind of songs.

  • @supadave2k2 As long as "there" was somewhere you didn't have to listen to this stuff!

  • I understand this song perfectly well and I am passionately anti-war. But it's still a pile of cacophonous, repetitive, droning, nasal, twangy shite!

  • Brilliant song! How can anybody not grasp what this is all about? My 13 yr old son loves and UNDERSTANDS this. Man is a genius!

  • It's sad how many negative comments are on this. I'm pretty young and I can appreciate this. Definately better than alot of the music being released nowadays.

  • heard this in history class and it stuck -_-;

  • Great song. Sadly, I don't think the attention span of your average youtube viewer will stick long enough to derive any meaning from a piece this long, but I'm glad it's here for people to search and find when the mood strikes. Still relevant, still memorable. Everyone should learn the chorus, then go find out what it means themselves.

  • To all of you who claim Arlo is rambling or that he makes no sense. Do not blame your inability to decipher/think critically for a song that speaks volumes about the United States.

  • Hmmm, maybe if I drop a shit ton of acid I might understand what the hell he's babbling about.

  • @supadave2k2 -- If you'd've lived thru the 60s Vietnam era you'd know whqat it's about ... Or you can see Arlo's movie based on this song. Arlo AND Officer Obie BOTH appear as themselves in the movie. REALLY!☺

  • @supadave2k2 -- If you'd've lived thru the 60s Vietnam era you'd know what it's about ... Or you can see Arlo's movie based on this song. Arlo AND Officer Obie BOTH appear as themselves in the movie. REALLY!☺

  • I love this song! My girls, all four and all are in their 20's except one play this every Thanksgiving as a tradition. I guess you have to have taste in music for a REAL American Classic to appreciate a good Story Teller! Beats the hell out of the crap that's being petaled out there now as music, Thanks Arlo, you a great Man!

  • Wow...I can't believe the negative responses from young people on this song and artist. Amazing! Forgive them for they know not what they do... they have no idea... little do they realize their generation should be producing songs and artists of this calliber. It's hard to believe they are so lacking in values and comprehension that they cannot understand the meaning and purpose of this song! And they are going to be in charge in a few more years... we are in trouble, America...

  • @OutsourceCongress

I'm 16 and I definitely agree with you... I'm hard pressed to find good new music, so I've stopped looking. I very rarely listen to anything more recent than 30 years, and my tastes lie around the 16th century. I've always loved this song, and I've introduced Arlo to some of my friends. I've learned that you just have to show them what they're missing, and they'll take right to it. Have hope, not all is lost.

    God bless.

  • Go, Arlo, go!

  • Hate this song with a passion!!!!!It rambles on and on and does not make any point!!!

  • @geebeeman1 Then you obviously didn't listen to it clear enough. The point of this song was a protest for Vietnam War.

  • Who's ever heard of a dump closed on Thanksgiving?

  • 67 people are not intelligent enough to enjoy an american classic !

  • I made it to 8 minutes. I couldn't go any further. Does any of these ramblings ever link in at the end? That was torture.

  • @AAAngus1 Your generation has a bad attention deficit disorder problem. I pity you!

  • @okbass According to your Accounts, AAAngus1 is only 6 years younger than you. Doesn't that put you in the same generation?

  • my parents used to sing this song when we were all happy and on road trips together when I was a little kid....now my parents hate each other and the entire family pretty much doesn't talk and i feel like we are more like roommates than family members, and they got divorced years ago.

But when I get sad about it I can always turn on this song and remember the days before stuff got all broken. <3

  • Remarkably I've come to understand the virtues of a draft (with no deferments) as a national service. It helps build the middle class. With no deferments it means that the politicians sons and daughters will be called up too no exceptions. Just maybe give them pause to send them into danger.

  • I love Arlo, one of the greatest artist of all time. I am watching Alice's restaurant on Netflix as I write this.

  • @kcshikles must get Netflix account!

  • @kcshikles

    theres a movie?

  • @ValforWing Yes there is, and it is called: Alice's restaurant. Look it up, it is a good movie if you like Arlo Guthrie, which I do.

  • this song in one of the true classic and its should be issued at birth for everyone

  • Ever notice this and Hot Tuna's "Keep on Truckin Mama" are the same melody?

  • @SuperBeachbum60 it is a standard talking blues with a walking bass line. There are any number of songs

  • Too all those who don't understand the impact this song had back in the 60's give it some serious thought regarding its length. The symbolism and genuine comedic approach to arrive at the end result...protesting the Viet Nam war. How long is it really? Could be you just don't have the patience to survive genuine entertainment.

  • aah so bored any guys want to rescue me

  • 64 people think this is a tat too long

  • this recording of this song stinks. you can't hardly hear the words. yes i know i clicked on the song, but i thought it would be better, is there a better version on here

  • Agreed, God bless you, Arlo.

  • I'm so very glad he never developed Huntington's Disease like his father. Dodged a bullet there, Arlo. God Bless You, Man.

  • view number 1227722

  • Amazing how this guy can remember this 18 min. story year after year.

  • you put the bird in, start this tune and then you have a done turkey with dessing, every fucking year it works

  • Big yellow joint, big yellow joint..

I'll meet ya down by the big yellow joint :D

  • Unforgettable!

  • always a jump start to the holidays.

  • Howdy out there, Sally here and I used to work at Alice's Restaurant. What a hoot and I know Alice and Arlo and Officer Obie and I dated Marc Obanhein , Officer Obie's son who has since passed away and my brother H.A. built out the church for Arlo to open an AidsCenter. Don't know about that now. I need to take a breath now.

Happy holidays to all of you.

  • What a stupid song....

  • boring...

  • Whether theres a political meaning or not, its a hillarious song.
