Director: "Dennis, we need you to inhale from some oxygen mask, kneel down in front of some hot chicks pussy for a solid minute, and act like a horny baby. Also, you're hyperventilating and moaning the whole time in ecstasy. Stare at her vag a few times. You got it?"
Any other actor would have had that awkward silent moment, but Dennis Hopper...
@woodywoodpecker896 im really sure that 99% of people dont think like you about his acting....becasue just isnt over reacting, so, your comment is coming from somone who is an ASSHOLE!!! .... jajajajajajaja
IF violence and perversion had always been the way of our world then our species would be extinct. At the beginning we were under constant ATTACK from other species looking for food~ much better equipped than us.
By working in harmony AND using our intelligence we survived. BUT we failed to appreciate the VERY LONG childhood of humans and GIVE OUR CHILDREN the Love&Respect that is ESSENTIAL until early adulthood. UNLESS we rectify this SOON we will DESTROY ourselves without doubt.
That line is outrageous in itself in that Miss Rossellini was one of the most beautiful women at that time and to be addressed as a "Shithead" is priceless.
@MrGamer990 Also this is more or less a cult film, enjoyed by a select group of viewers, away from mainstream audience, like most of Lynch's films. So if you're not part of that cult following, then stop insulting what they love.
@MrGamer990 Thank you, we get that you don't like Blue Velvet. So instead of whining about it maybe you should think about it a little more. When I first saw it, I didn't like it, but when I took the time to go back understand everything, I appreciated it a lot more. Even Dennis Hopper yelling the f word. I love this film because I can relate to it, and I can guarantee there's a lot more to it than you think.
@pontusgardinger - ask yourself this: what is so great about this pointless film?
it is just another bad film that is a complete mess from its writing to acting to dialogue. the only saving grace is the cinematography and music, thats it, otherwise david lynch's direction is just a stepping stone compared to other director who specialize in immersing themselves to a film much darker than this ever tried to be but is not, as it is just silly and superfluous.
I like the mood and directing. It doesn't have to follow all the movie rules like shawshank redemption or something. This is something uique and magical. Like art, you don't always understand it, but it still draws you to it. It speaks to your soul. Clearly not to yours though. Oh well.
@pontusgardinger - frank's actions as of that of a kid when posing as a tough guy by using the word "FUCK" in everything else he says. the isabella character is a contradiction and the laura dern character is vacuous and pointless to even be in the film except to serve as a love interest. kyle's character is likable but dull and what your missing is that this film has elements that are just strange for its own sake, i must further add that david lynch has to be the worst writer ever. pointless!!
@pontusgardinger - you have just stated the film's impact rather than judge the film as a whole. who cares if the film is the greatest film ever as voted by "CRITICS" ?! what you seem to be missing is that the characters are bland, badly written and both the isabella rosellini character and the dennis hopper character are over the top with isabella being a contradictory on all her action, and with the frank booth character being juvenile and just not at all menacing. the film is a factious one
@ktoimil it is not just dennis hopper thats the worst part of the film, but through out there are strange things happening for its own sake(e.g lady dancing on top of a car while frank beats jeffrey). i love strange and obscure films, but not when a genious like david lynch screws with logic 100%, which is exactly what his other film Wild at heart was but that was the tone. in blue velvet to me lynch actually whats us to take it seriously, and plz tell me what is so great about this film?
@MrGamer990 This movie is great, voted by many critics as one of the best films of the 80's. I don't agree that it's just weirdness for the sake of being weird. That part of the scene when the lady dances on the car adds alot to it. It makes it even more bizarre, sort of like the perspective of the evil side, that what Frank is doing is something beautiful.
@ktoimil and if you must know nearly all his roles later in his career has been less over the top than and less stupid than frank boothe, which is bad for him and i don't really see whats so great about his performance. watch A Clockwork Orange and you will get the same over the topness by malcolm mcdowell but done right again. i do not blame hopper for his bad performance, that blame goes to sadly a director i found interesting and that is David Lynch. he is smart but this by far is his worst.
@ktoimil what you must know is that i do find the dennis hopper character to be a sadist and a sick monster, but at the same time he is ridiculously over the top and not in a scary way but in a completely childish way. here are two examples of over the top performances done right: gary oldman in Leon(the professional) and anthony hopkins in silence of the lambs.
both psychotic but in the right way, while dennis hopper doesn't really do much besides being over the top( e.g red rock west - 1994).
i have seen blue velvet twice, and let me say that dennis hopper is the worst part of the entire film, which is bad but he is the reason it is even worse.
i mean almost every line he utters he has to inlude the word "fuck" or "fucker" or even "heres to you fuck". its like a child who has just heard the word from a bully and starts to use it to sound tough, which makes hopper even more laughable than frightening. i do not understand what makes this film great, cause it is just stupid.
@MrGamer990 I agree that the f-word does take away alot of credibility from actors in important scenes, but I've never heard the f-word used like it is in this film. Dennis Hopper completely surrenders himself to his character, removing all inhibitions. That is a very difficult feat. When he says the f-word, you can really feel the anger behind it. I'll confess that his character is funny in many respects, but he is also terribly frightening.
There is a hilarious reference to this in Family Guy. Stewie demands Lois wash his buttocks, "circular motions only," then shouts "Don't you look at me!!!" Knowing this movie just makes him that much creepier.
When I tried to watch this movie I found it repulsive. I still can't stand it. Never was able to watch the whole thing. So what if he can act crazy? Who gives a sh*t?
@JBHutto it's hardly a believable scene but if you think that makes me a prude you are one hell of a weirdo, there's nothing prudish about not appreciating violence and perversion
@revokdaryl1 that's a negative perspective and I think it's an easy way out, the world is a big place and much of it is out of our control but as far as what we put out into the universe, as individuals, I think that matters and there's only one way to stop violence and perversion and that is to acquire a measure of self control, whether we do that individually or collectively isn't as important as that we make whatever efforts are in our power to work in that direction
@SuddenSparkles You're right, this is a negative perspective. It's important to note that all the evidence points toward violence and perversion being the way of the world. If we were going to change our ways, wouldn't we have done so by now?
@revokdaryl1 I think you are probably wanting a philosphical discussion that would take a while but it takes us into so many different directions at once and you need to break it down into pieces for instance, in this clip, within the context of the narrative you notice it begins with the Hopper character inhaling substances, presumably oxygen, without which one does not have life and life encompasses death, darkness, disease so humanity attempts to push itself forward and that requires vision
it was filmed in the confederate house? wtf was the name of that bldg in wilm nc>?>by the fountain on the corner of 4th and market that actual room this was filmed in has carried the torch since the filming
Last night while I was making sweet sweet love to my girlfriend, she said "Mommy loves you" then, I pulled put of there and took a shower. It got a little too weird
I know this girl that sniffs hand sanitizer during class, so when ever she does this I look at her and say "Mommy. baby wants blue velvet." just like dennis
@bigbaltimore08 It does not mean you are smart, it does not mean you are a loser. The only thing that might signify stupidity is making blanket statements about drug use.
@bigbaltimore08 If I am not supposed to take your statement literally then that means you were being figurative. So what did your comment really mean then, if you didn't mean it literally?
@mygaffer Common sense would tell you that I didn't mean literally everyone who doesn't do drugs is smart, but that they were smart in this particular instance. As in, people who don't do drugs are smart for not doing drugs, but that doesn't mean that their necessarily smart in all other aspects of life.
@bigbaltimore08 One thing you'll find is that common sense is not too common. There was no way to read into your comment anything than what you said. You said not taking drugs means you are smart. There are people who choose to use drugs who are very smart. I could list several for you but due to limited space in the comments section I will limit myself to William S. Burroughs, Lewis Carrol, Sigmund Freud and Aldous Huxley. I am not even counting alcohol which is also a drug.
I am not doubting that someone can be an intellectual individual and do drugs at the same time, so your list of people who've done drugs and have led successful lives is completely irrelevant. When you read comments on youtube you should at least consider the possibility that not everyone on here is completely illogical. That is what you would have had to assume about me to think what you thought about my original comment.
The statement would be so asinine if you interpreted it the way you did. After all, it's impossible to think that I've met everyone in the world who has taken drugs, so I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that you did. It's akin to calling someone out for saying someone the most beautiful person in the world. The statement is not to be taken 100% literally. Simply put, I think you're the lone soul who misinterpreted what I meant, otherwise people would be agreeing with your argument.
@bigbaltimore08 "Your not a loser if you don't take drugs. It means your smart." Those are your words exactly. Now you know your mistake and you want to use semantics to argue your mistake never existed. The proof is the proverbial pudding. If you want to come out and admit your statement is incorrect then I applaud your willingness to admit your earlier failing. Admitting a mistake is always harder then denying one.
@mygaffer every serious artist and intellectual has taken drugs. If people don't know that they need to wake up. Without drug experiences, people have limited their existence on this earth greatly.
I MISS YOU DENNIS! YOU WERE THE BEST!!!! One of the most subversive and shocking scenes in all of cinema history! I LOVE FRANK BOOTH! Blue Velvet best film of the last 25 years!
@SaUrOrNiThOiDeS He's a drug addict and psychotic killer. Years of drug use and the constant paranoia that comes with being an underworld crime-lord (constantly worrying about assassination, never being able to trust anyone, being totally ruthless ALL THE TIME, etc.) has taken its toll on his psyche. He has developed a lot of mental problems as a result.
@srb300 i think it's abit more than that to be honest. Crying out 'Mommy' in a sexual framework, obviously refers to his childhood. I'm guessing he was abused maybe by his father or something. Who knows.
I just got finished watching this movie. I read a review on ti taht said "Wierd fro wierds sake isn't enough; there has to be more." That's kind of how I feel. I didn't get any deper meaning or purpose...it just seemed wierd. It was a good movie, but not great to me.
@KrfNYC2 If you can't understand David Lynch, you're not watching close enough. Especially in Blue Velvet, there's a lot of symbolism and visual cues that highlight the themes in the film and the transformation that the protagonist is undergoing. It's much more than simply the plot. BV is about the seedy underbelly of society, what happens when you peel away the pristine veneer of suburban life. Underneath it is the mealy, writhing insects of society--a recurring symbol throughout the film.
@evilpeaches7 Yeah I figured that there was a lot of symbolism. But if you ask me, symbolism is often bad for effect. The themes become so hidden and difficult to catch that not many people are going to get it. And isn't that how we judge art...by how it reaches people?
@KrfNYC2 Hey, it's a David Lynch film. "Hidden and difficult to catch" are his style. :P I've pored over Eraserhead enough that this film unraveled pretty easy. Which is to say that it's brilliantly woven together. I don't think the point of the film is all that difficult to ascertain; it's pretty up front, even if you don't catch the parallels and symbolism. If you just watch it, it's a mystery film. If you pay attention, it's a postmodern social commentary.
@KrfNYC2 Besides, any good art is chock full of symbols. That's all art is, and film is no different. If you watch any great film close enough you'll see thematic symbolism on every level of the film.
@evilpeaches7 Yes, a lot of art has symbolism. But to me, if symbolism convolutes the theme and doesn't convey it's message...what is so good about it?
@KrfNYC2 How does it convolute its theme or deviate from the message? Where do you see any symbols in the film that don't pertain in some way to an underlying theme?
Director: "Dennis, we need you to inhale from some oxygen mask, kneel down in front of some hot chicks pussy for a solid minute, and act like a horny baby. Also, you're hyperventilating and moaning the whole time in ecstasy. Stare at her vag a few times. You got it?"

@bigbaltimore08 If I am not supposed to take your statement literally then that means you were being figurative. So what did your comment really mean then, if you didn't mean it literally?
mygaffer 9 months ago
@mygaffer Common sense would tell you that I didn't mean literally everyone who doesn't do drugs is smart, but that they were smart in this particular instance. As in, people who don't do drugs are smart for not doing drugs, but that doesn't mean that their necessarily smart in all other aspects of life.
bigbaltimore08 9 months ago
@bigbaltimore08 One thing you'll find is that common sense is not too common. There was no way to read into your comment anything than what you said. You said not taking drugs means you are smart. There are people who choose to use drugs who are very smart. I could list several for you but due to limited space in the comments section I will limit myself to William S. Burroughs, Lewis Carrol, Sigmund Freud and Aldous Huxley. I am not even counting alcohol which is also a drug.
mygaffer 9 months ago
I am not doubting that someone can be an intellectual individual and do drugs at the same time, so your list of people who've done drugs and have led successful lives is completely irrelevant. When you read comments on youtube you should at least consider the possibility that not everyone on here is completely illogical. That is what you would have had to assume about me to think what you thought about my original comment.
bigbaltimore08 9 months ago

@srb300 Dennis Hopper was not a killer! He may have been a drug addict and all, but not a killer.

@AibonNano Not sure if you're being sarcastic but I was referencing the character Frank Moon, not Hopper.
srb300 8 months ago
@srb300 i think it's abit more than that to be honest. Crying out 'Mommy' in a sexual framework, obviously refers to his childhood. I'm guessing he was abused maybe by his father or something. Who knows.

I just got finished watching this movie. I read a review on ti taht said "Wierd fro wierds sake isn't enough; there has to be more." That's kind of how I feel. I didn't get any deper meaning or purpose...it just seemed wierd. It was a good movie, but not great to me.
KrfNYC2 1 year ago
@KrfNYC2 If you can't understand David Lynch, you're not watching close enough. Especially in Blue Velvet, there's a lot of symbolism and visual cues that highlight the themes in the film and the transformation that the protagonist is undergoing. It's much more than simply the plot. BV is about the seedy underbelly of society, what happens when you peel away the pristine veneer of suburban life. Underneath it is the mealy, writhing insects of society--a recurring symbol throughout the film.
evilpeaches7 1 year ago
@evilpeaches7 Yeah I figured that there was a lot of symbolism. But if you ask me, symbolism is often bad for effect. The themes become so hidden and difficult to catch that not many people are going to get it. And isn't that how we judge art...by how it reaches people?
KrfNYC2 1 year ago
@KrfNYC2 Hey, it's a David Lynch film. "Hidden and difficult to catch" are his style. :P I've pored over Eraserhead enough that this film unraveled pretty easy. Which is to say that it's brilliantly woven together. I don't think the point of the film is all that difficult to ascertain; it's pretty up front, even if you don't catch the parallels and symbolism. If you just watch it, it's a mystery film. If you pay attention, it's a postmodern social commentary.
evilpeaches7 1 year ago
@KrfNYC2 Besides, any good art is chock full of symbols. That's all art is, and film is no different. If you watch any great film close enough you'll see thematic symbolism on every level of the film.
evilpeaches7 1 year ago
@evilpeaches7 Yes, a lot of art has symbolism. But to me, if symbolism convolutes the theme and doesn't convey it's message...what is so good about it?
KrfNYC2 1 year ago
@KrfNYC2 How does it convolute its theme or deviate from the message? Where do you see any symbols in the film that don't pertain in some way to an underlying theme?
