  • Great job -- that solo is brutal. One of my faves, along with the first long Blackmore solo on "Lazy."

  • A+

  • Nailed it! Saw Carlton last week in LA. Still the best!

  • Yes.

  • Perfect!

  • Well done!

  • Really nice job.

  • You can hear its same guitar that is on the track.Great playing.

  • Good man yourself and thank you so much for your video! It's so refreshing on 'youtube' once in a while when you stumble across somebody who's not just a frustrated / in-experienced kid in the wanna-be-famous bedroom, innocently butchering a solo/song. Your playing is pristine and your ability is way under-exposed on the internet my friend. Once again, thank you for sharing your feel, ear, and astounding playing on this site.It is something for all us axemen to apprerciate, good man.

  • Did you know that Larry Carlton improvised that entire solo on the spot? Who thinks of that shit while playing in the studio? So awesome!

  • well done... reminds us how great Larry was here. spot on in a number of areas...your sounds has a tad more growl too. A+

  • Even Audley Freed had this solo as a base for building one of his smoothest pieces

  • Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away...?

  • Nailed that sucker! How long did you practice to get it down? I'm asking 'cause I want to learn it, too....thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent job - great playing

  • awesome

  • Dude - awesome. But don't forget, without the conflicting bass line - that solo doesn't sound half as good. Well done. Really. No shit - well done........

  • you are absolutely brilliant!!!!

  • I've been wanting to play this for some time,

but, I can't seem to find any tabs around that are reliable

    can anyone help?

  • @Herow93 I purchased the program Subscribe, it's a program made by a musician for musicians. It's very very useful to find out solos like this. Before I got this program I only learned solo's which had a guitar pro file on ultimate-guitar, but now I just find them out myself, it's sticks a lot better in your head as well if you do it this way!

    Grtz Jordi

  • Great job

Have you checked out the youtube video Kid Charlemagne by Steely Damned? Check it out, some great guitar work

  • Right on, nice job,

Have you seen the youtube Kid Charlemagne by Steely Damned? Real good job by that guitarist also... Check it out

  • nasty

  • very nice, very nice. i've watched a handful of these and i think i like yours the best because the fingering is closest to how i play it. one of the best solos ever. i've always wanted to work out a harmony line to it too, but i get part of the way and give up. i think it's a good time to revisit that idea...

  • That was top notch-amazing stuff!! You nailed that baby....

  • very nice

    :)

  • Very nice.

  • Well done.

  • try turning the recording down a bit, and you up brother, cant hear your sound.

  • @wazenbee I've heard your material on your profile page and whilst it's nice, just back off a little on the overdrive.

  • Tha was good.

  • NAILED it.

  • i want tabs tabs tabs tabs!

  • Top-notch.

  • Nailied it.

  • great choice and great play

  • Well done-hall of fame solo!

  • Executed beautifully, silky smooth. Merry Christmas, Billy ;)

  • hey man awesome, how do you stick your pick to your finger?

  • Good question! It's just something that happens, I don't purposely stick it to my finger, but I've noticed myself balancing it on there a few times without realising.

  • @nairnloon LOL, I've seen pictures of me performing and see the same thing. You hold your pick like I do and the first joint of the index finger. I think you do get a balance there, plus the sweat seems to make picks made of acetal almost glue to you. Sometimes when playing live, and I want to fingerpick, I just put my pick against my forehead and it stays there; usually gets a few people pointing or laughing or both....

  • This guy is my teacher :D

  • Nicely done!

  • O.K., so I won't hate myself for not being able to play this after only two years of playing electric. That's fantastic man. Much respect.

  • Nice one Colin! For those of you who think he's good in this video, you should see him in person! He's a master of the fretboard! ;)

On another note I now own this guitar! Jealous much? :P

  • flawless

    superb!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nailed it. Much respect. and envy!

    I'm still crawling through it.

  • "Took me a wee while to get this one smooth."

Even with a Tascam MP-GT1 Guitar Trainer, it ain't easy! NICE JOB!

  • From a lead quitarist for over 40 year, I have to give you props. Great job on a complex solo.

  • nice job!! same here, took me a bit to get it flawless...well worth it so fun to play. I couldn't have put a better description in the info box!!

  • I guess someone up top here said Carlton nailed it in one take. If he did then that's just silly. It would take me a year to figure this out. Well played.

  • nice PRS in the back btw

  • I' m just learning this solo it's AMAZING...just like u

  • Fantastic job on this solo you nailed it perfectly and everything sounded great. If you notice Carlton is playing quite a few things, leading into and out of chords playing pentatonic/blues scale, he even arpeggiates the chords. It's an amazingly smooth and complex piece that I think some people listen to and not really think much of but there's SO much going on in that solo. Its beautiful and you played it beautifully! great cover man

  • Sick good! Nice work!

You ever wonder how Carlton and others come up with these melodic beautiful runs? Is it a gift just given to them, or what?

  • @septip123 You have to learn to think like he does. Instead of thinking A major, thick C minor, and expand on that.

  • @septip123 Practice. There is a video of Larry talking about how his mother would take him to guitar lessons every week for like 10 years he said. The more you learn about music and develop technique, the better you are at playing stuff like this.

  • that is beautiful :)

I'm learning that solo right now, this will undoubtably help a lot. thanks!

  • Certainly one of the all time greatest guitar solos. Very difficult to do it justice. I used to listen to this over and over and eventually learned from listening. Then I got one of LCs solo albums and learned the solo from Nightcrawler which is quite possibly even better!!

  • Beautifully played, one of my favorite Steely songs. What scale is that you're playing over? I especially like the run on 00:14, are you variating from the original scale there at all to achieve that sound?

  • Very nice playing! Great job!

  • I always loved this solo. great !

  • one of the best solo,s great job, thinking never get to that level !

  • How perfect! Beautifully played. Just like the song.

  • A-FREAKIN-PLUS!!

  • yes yes yes!!! I luckily saw Steely Dan at PoriJazzFestival,Finland, last summer YAMMEE!!!!

  • that has to be my all time favorite guitar solo - and you sure 'nuff nailed it! kudos!

  • Ya it really is a great solo, and you nailed it man, nicely done.

  • I agree... this is one of the best guitar solos ever recorded, and you nailed it! Well done.

  • Sweet!

  • I played this over the top of the actual song and its absolutely spot on!! unbelieveable!! great work!

  • you nailed it man, that sounds real good5*****s

  • That was outstanding!! Great playing!

  • Hey man you nailed it! NICE!! That's some tough shit for sure!

On a side note... this solo is even more mind-blowing when you realize that Larry Carlton largely improvised it on the spot and did it in just one take!

  • Very nice work, dude!

  • clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail....classic, nice playing!

  • Those test tubes and the scale, just get it all out of here...

  • Is there gas in the car? Is there gas in the car??

  • Yes, there's gas in the car. I think the people down the hall know who you are.

  • Beautiful work Nairloon !

  • Great sound man - got it right on and no messin

  • sounds fantastic

  • Absolutely freakin' awesome!!

    Amazing!!

  • Thanks all!

  • This is so wrong :) You played the riff just like Carlton!!!

  • :):)

  • Nice !

  • Good work mister!

  • Right on it man. Larry would be proud! What a tribute to the Master. Great job!

  • Good job, man! Yes it is one the greatest guitar solos ever written. It was named that by one of the major guitar magazines... I can never get sick of that solo. Just so tasteful...

  • nice tone

  • Love it. Just decided to have a go at this as it's one of my faves and thought I'd see who else had tried it. Nice job. You've saved me a bunch of time. Larry is most definitely a guitar playing genius! Now, how about Kid Charlemagne?

  • Gotta love it!Sweet Man!

  • Beautiful guitar, and you play it wonderfully. Thanks, man.

  • Thats great work man.

  • Awesome job!.

    I love that solo

  • BOOOYAAAAA!! you nailed it man!! couldn't you listen to that solo forever?? does anybody like that bend he does at the end of "where did you come from"? talk about the shivers!!! man that is some tasty shit.

  • KILLER!

  • Tight.

  • Great playing buddy! Thanks for sharing this.

It is a very complex, sophisticated solo with

excellent tone quality, creativity and the use of distortion and screaming high notes makes it sound interesting even after hearing it many times.

  • I salute you, this is one bitching solo, beautiful work. Love your 335 too.

  • thats very good... check out my version worked it out by ear so you'll see the different way i play it

  • great stuff! spot on

  • one of the greatest solos of all time and you nailed it!! great playing

  • Great playing Man!

I hear ya about Larry Carlton. Look up Chet Atkins and Larry Carlton playing Knuckle Buster. Smoooooth as butter!

  • great solo....great rendition!

  • Thanks, going through a Steely Dan/Larry Carlton obsession at the moment!
