What transformer did you use? I built one of these from a website. The transformer I used from a microwave, I don't think it was big enough, never got hot enough to weld anything.

@gwheyduke ehhh, Just a standard microwave transformer. Cut the secondary out and wrap 2 or so windings of thick wire and you're done it. They'll only weld very thin metal. The primary use is to weld tabs onto rechargeable batteries; that way you can rebuild battery packs for cordless drills, RC cars, etc.
