I heard this on the Radio in 1976 and had to go out and buy it (and I've still got it). The writer was an absolute genius with the lyrics, who in 2011 would dream of rhyming
" her escape was so urgent that she forgot her detergent". Totally inspired. Re-release it now!!!!
In 2010 I thought this song was fantastic - nothing has changed - I'm happy that so many of us - thinks so much of you and we all appreciate music that not only survives, but grows in excellence - once more I challenge the music of now to match this magic.....................
i worked as a venue roadie at the elizabethan ballroom belle vue manchester in 1976 and worked on the kursaals then went with them on a couple of more gigs round the north west, fantastic loved it,you think the polish can drink, you aint met the kursaal flyers.
I can rember seeing this on Top Of The Pops in 1976 and i thought wow this is awsome well its 2011 and you know what its still awsome a timless classic.
Saw em at the Coop hall Warrington 76, coz I'd seen them on Magpie doing Speedway, one of the best live acts I've ever seen !( my mates went to see Kiss in Manchester on the same night, think I got the better deal !!) Grahames greatest moment was still to come,"Do anything you wanna do" one of the greatest powerpop songs ever .
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. So over the top, so camp, so tongue in cheek. Loved this from the day I first heard it and I bought the single, still got it. Lyrics are just superb. Sorry jackwilshiresfakeid, if you can't see that this is the Kursaals taking the piss out of it self important eighties bands then you need a personality transplant. Full blown orchestral backing, soaring strings, heavenly choir? All credit to them, they set themselves up and some people couldn't see the gag.
Saw these at the Co-op hall Warrington in 1976, the same night as Kiss were playing in Manchester...a former friend went to see the latter I chose the former, Blokes dressed like animals playing heavy metal or sophisticated British pop, what a nobrainer !!, liked em since I saw them play speedway on" Magpie" shame Graeme left, but Do anything is one of the best powerpop songs ever !
Excellent tongue-in-cheek lyrics. A vastly underrated song that is guaranteed to raise a smile. 'Her escape was so urgent she forgot her detergent' .... almost as good as my all-time favourite gag line from Jilted John 'I was so upset that I cried all the way to the chip shop'. They don't write them like that any more.
@shuchr You should really have put a commar before you wrote the last four words of your last sentence. And with killer lines like 'your a prick', well if wit was shit then you're quite clearly a man suffering from constipation.
@ScenemoSweetie thats gotta be vic collins, i was at his house in 1963 xmas when he got his first guitar, spent many hours at his house, we were great friends as kids, next time you see him, ask him if he's still a glutton for the alamo, see what he says

@gary3640 Yes I remember the hot summer of 76 and I was 15 (16 in October 76). Where have the years gone mate?? You must be like me...50 or near now :(
@Oggie60 Yes, where have the years gone? It's hard to fathom that those of us who were in our mid and late teens when the Jam rolled onto the scene, are pulling up to the half century mark.
Now, those of us in the States unfortunately missed a good deal of great stuff like this- in fact, I've got to admit, that I first heard of this band a couple of weeks ago. Some really good stuff from the pub rock scene made it over here- Wreckless Eric, Eddie and the Hot Rods, but we did miss these guys
Superb. You don't get lyrics like that any more - almost rivals "Kung Fu Fighting". Yes, looks a bit like Chris Kamara..... but, more resemblance to Matthew Broderick I think.
Was good to hear this on Steve Wright the other day! Richard (Richie) Bull taught me to scuba dive some years ago when he used to run a scuba diving shop in Bristol. He can be seen acting as a dive safety expert on many of the BBC natural history diving programmes (Oceans is just one example) and also Time Team, series 3 (episode 4) titled: "A Wreck of the Spanish Armada".
Had to laugh, my Mrs just said to me " did you hear that song Steve Wright played on the radio yesterday, it had a ridiculous lyric rhyming Urgent with detergent"
This not pure Kursaals. As a previous poster said they were a Pub Rock band from Southend/Canvey Island. Although most of their songs had a humourous element, this was far more commercial with a nod to glam rock.
Even their Albums didn't catch their live character.
Coney Island is in America Canvey Island is in Essex. Don't understand the reference, unless it is to the Kursaal, the first funfair style theme park.
Well apparently she DOES know that he knows that she's a lying cheat,as she saw his reflection as he spied on her.Blimey..they deserved each other!! Tis a great time tunnel song though.

saw paul and the boys well at least some of em on tour a few years ago on the naughty rhythms tour they were a bit shaky at the start but by the end they had got their collective arses in gear and were fantastic
I know that we know that you know that you need to see a dentist you ugly sod. I'd rather get a blow job from a vampire than this decayed teeth terror!
Is this a classic. In my opinion it comes very close because it works on so many levels. The 'George Cole' lookalike singer is fantastic and the lyrics are truly memorable. But its the arrangement that does it...listen to The Crystals "The He Kissed Me"....to understand why....this is a fantastic record and ought to be re-released..a smashing record from a great era..IMO
That guitarist in the hat was good fun ... he hung out with the roadies on another bands tour in Winter 78 for a few days - I was the t.shirt seller on the tour .....
In addition it was written by him in about ten minutes in a bar in southend, and was written because his girlfriend, who he was engaged to, was cheating on him, he was working in mornings and the other guy afternoons, one day my dad came to see her early and caught her with this other guy... totally true i swear!!
i know that no one will ever believe me but my dad knew the kurzaals very well, even knew Derek the original singer before they goyt famous, and i would just like to say my dad wrote this song for them, and they took it word for word, they were struggling for new material and asked him to write them something and was written in a pub in southend in ten minutes, i dont care who believes this or not because it does not matter, but i put my life and everything else i care about on it
I just LOVE this song. Does anyone remember the BBC documentary about the band on tour? And more importantly, any chance of somebody posting 'Radio Romance' on here...PLEEEEEASE!!!!
remember when this first came out and its still a classic

Note to OP - fritz51302
You need to correct the lyrics. First verse line 2 to be changed from "When I saw her in the corner" to "When I saw her in the Coin-Op".
If it's your time span, then you'll remember a Coin-Op was a sometimes-used term for a non-attended laundry.
Cheers for posting this video. Great lyrics. Timeless indeed !!

Sorry. It's the sound of the song that made me make the Phil Spector connection.

i know that no one will ever believe me but my dad knew the kurzaals very well, even knew Derek the original singer before they goyt famous, and i would just like to say my dad wrote this song for them, and they took it word for word, they were struggling for new material and asked him to write them something and was written in a pub in southend in ten minutes, i dont care who believes this or not because it does not matter, but i put my life and everything else i care about on it

I didn't really like this song until I finally understood it.
It's a parody of the Phil Spector songs of the 60's.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
