watching 'famous mormons' I (re)discovered Gladys Knight - her voice is well recognized to our ears her in Europe, but actually her name alone wouldn't have rang the bell! So I started digging into YouTube clips about Gladys and ... to my surprise I mentioned her voice was as strong age 17 as it is today! So I kept on searching - O BOY!!! I guess she has been singing in God's choir as a soloist before she came on earth! I guess as a little child she must have sung lovely already!
Hi a few years back. They had a all star benefit concert here in New York at MSG.
and they had stars from Jessica Simpson to Britney Spears to Aretha and Gladys .
They had news crews doing to interviews in the lobby. 80% of those were interview were like . where here to see Gladys ! and i remember sitting threw performer after performer thinking when is Gladys coming out then right after Aretha the house went completely blk and then heard. I GOTTA A TRAIN TO CATCH ! it was Gladys !
My comments about Aretha Franklin remains the same; Gladys Knight is a natural talent, she is always top as a performance/vocalist artist in my book, I'm not saying this because I'm a Georgia Peach; because I have visited her father's (Rev. C. L. Franklin) Church every summer for the past 5 decades and I had opportunity to enjoy Aretha's singing. I believe with Aretha's financial opportunity, she had more of a promotional advantage than Gladys, as well as, appearing in more concert tours.
I simply can't believe that you found this! I've heard so much about the 7 year old diva smashing the competition, but never actually heard her. She was amazing then, and is amazing now.
This was during the period when "THE ORIGINAL AMATEUR HOUR" was presented on both radio AND TV (although not simulcast). We're quite lucky someone saved the transcription of the radio version of Gladys' performance, as I doubt the TV kinescope exists....
Wow! Its crazy 2 hear one of music's greatest voices in the beginning. U can definitely see that even at 7 she had the chops 2 become a great vocalist which she did. Thanks 4 posting.
GOD!!! This is precious and beautiful! Seven years old?! Those deep, husky vocals had yet to fully blossom, but there they are, a couple of notes there it sounds almost exactly like her as a grown woman. That's talent you can't synthesize folks. Incredible.
This lady has been singing for over 60 years. Has to be the Greatest of All Times.
