@BuckshotFX4 Not entirely true, PROS train on EXACTLY what they use not make excuses that they are good enough with just one platform; this kind of ad hocery constantly bites the USMC in the ass, look at OIF in 2003
Has anyone stopped to consider that this might have been a simple training op and some of the guys might have been going down the rope out an actual flying helo for the first time? You can slide down from the tower all you want but doing it for real requires practice before you get as good as some Special Ops Unit.
Yet again we see what happens when puss nutted officers more concerned with their careers than with their men results in shittyness all around. Case in point...the STRYKER...a wheeled piece of shit. The Marines would be safer in shopping carts with trash can lids zip tied to the sides.
yea, i do agree and I'm a Marine. Marines lack maturity. It might come down to an individual but i think mostly because of the age. Most Marines are young as fuck. And the ones leading are young as fuck too. I still love the Marines and the corps but it is what it is.
I would say Marines are most effective in all out conventional warfare and amphibious landing.
They're only good at destorying shit. But they do a pretty good job at that.
They will not be effective even doing that if their EFV strikes a sea mine or takes an ATGM because its plowing through waters the USN refuses to clear and is itself a bloated target without stealth or APS. Defaulting back to foot-sloggers from trucks, even worse.
@SOjuice Semper Fi. Let's face it, the reason they're so young is that what we do is a young man's game. If you could only teach the patience and decision making skills of a 40 year old to the 19 yr old, it would make a difference, but wars are fought by kids. The average age of US enlisted men in Vietnam was something like 19.5 years. In the all volunteer forces today it isn't much higher.
@penquinbum And that's why we are LOSING in Iraq/Afghanistan. Young punks without maturity follow the inept bureaucracies blindly, kill innocent civilians and themselves. The "Wars" you describe are actually RACKETS to prolong violence for $. We need a PROFESSIONAL military of adults that SMOTHERS wars by excellence.
What happened? I do remember going down that rope so much faster. Going through the hole on a 46, we had the whole fire team on the rope at the same time ready to descend. Went down that rope so fast that my boots and uniform were smoking when I had to slow down and clear the rope while looking down for a good landing and up to make sure I cleared the landing zone for the Marine about 1/2 second above me.
I can never figure out why people in other branches of the service hate Marines so much, I thought we fought under the same flag. Every branch of the service has a different mission and a different way of doing things. As a former 0311 I can tell you that than any Marine grunt would love to go to Airborne school but were not given that choice unless your in Recon. Marines are amphibious warriors not Airborne. We only use fast ropping for urban missions. Marines win battles, the Army wins wars !
As a former USMC enlistedman and officer I wish that your outlook was all that we need everyone to think. The facts are that the USMC has a culture of malignant narcissism that bad-mouths the other services beginning in boot camp and TBS while excusing away marine corruption and incompetence. The latter was simply intolerable for me and I switched to the Army. If you are going to brag that you are the best, at least provide some reasons for it.
Wanna talk 'malignant' narcicism? Try the Air Force. We spend billions on our penis extenders. "Fiber optic, stand off, fire and forget, precision, jointness?" Those words = blank check. Its worse than a trade union. Its a Star Trek convention and everyone seems to think this whole war thing is just a fantasy role playing game. "What?! you dont have enough manna to do that. Only I'm allowed to do that. Stop making me look bad." Punishment by paperwork and blind adherance to tech data.
Great feedback! The USMC is stupid Ludditte malignant narcissism for sure and the USAF "RMA" egomania by "precision" strike. Both are BUREAUCRACIES (rackets) not professions; but in the AF if what you do is stupid in the AIR you can DIE; most marines stay on the ground 99.9% of the time as this video shows...
Note the rifle on dude man's back at 1:03. Looks like a French FAMAS assault rifle. US military doesn't use those (also note the different camo pattern and load bearing equipment.) These are French soldats enjoying a rare oportunity to 'play' on one of thier American counterpart's helicopters.) And what is it with the brits allways being so convinced that thier way is the only way? If it wasn't for the US's 'unproper' methods, Monty would still be masterbating on the outskirts of Caen.
My bust; I thought I mentioned in video description French commandos were on board.
You are wrong about Caen; if U.S. units to include the USMC which fortunately never fought the Germans in WW2, had to go up against German STUGs, Panthers and Tigers which had either lower silhouettes and bigger guns than our 75mm Shermans we would have done far worse than the Brits in their 76.2mm Firefly Sherman medium tanks. Watch the video we made on Arnhem watch?v=VSm5nBZ4X0A
In the Arnhem video you will see animation of our U.S. Airborne cutting off the Contentin penninsula and the St. Lo break-out facilitated by TSG Cullins' hedgerow cutters relieving pressure on Monty, but we must give the Brits credit for being better prepared on D-Day and moving farther inland than our foot-sloggers and then taking on the brunt of the German Panzers, which we were unprepared to do. I'm no Monty fan; but stating we would have done better doesn't wash.
I work on sh*tters and seriously, we only do fastrope in the rear to help people train. We use more traditional methods of insertion while providing more than adequate cover fire with three mounted .50 cals.
THEN, after you make the mistakes, you FIND SOLUTIONS.
We have been fast-roping for 15 years in the U.S. military. A weighted rope end is long over-due. We don't expect marines to solve this problem because they a delusional and think they have no problems or just want to "gut it out" which can only go so far, hence the USMC in trucks was AWOL to Bagdad while the Army in tracks waited 6 days for them
I was MIOPS boarding party RN & have done a shitload of fast ropes onto vessels. I agree with the criticisms raised here but would like to point out 1 flaw in US fast roping style. Boots on the rope. Not good. Brits are taught never to put boots on the rope because polish/boot leather streaks the rope making it uber-slippery for the next man down. I personally saw 1 unlucky bitch plummet 20ft on a training tower at HMS Cambridge. Sort this out first USMC! No more gay boot sliding.
Im not expert on the subject: personal opinion would be that ANY material that transfers from boot to rope is inherently dangerous. I think the best thing would be eliminate boots on the rope altogether. If we Brits can do it there is no reason the US cant do it to. The only time boots should EVER touch rope is when making an emergency stop, when the rope is wrapped over the top of the lower boot and stood on by the higher boot. But you still brake with the hands, so no danger. Thoughts?
as an air assault instructor we teach two methods to fast rope braking. both require boots on the rope adn having done it in combat i will tell you that if you think you want to take the extra second to put your feet on the rope halfway down your wrong. keeping it in place as you dessend is much safer and polish does nothing severe to th erope that the air crew couldnt clean. its part of their bird and therefore their responsibility to ensure the inspection of the equipment during preflight
As for the boots you linked to, I'm not totally sure. I agree with the comments on the video about the days of the black boot being numbered (no black in nature etc.) I have never fast roped in desert boots, just issue black leather. They PROBABLY would be less dangerous but if I was following you down the rope I would still prefer you to keep your feet off it! Ship decks are very unforgiving.
as an airassault instructer and fast rope instructor i will tell you the reason you use your feet is to slow your dessent. your boots work as a brake. you cant do that with your inner thigh.
I was MIOPS boarding party RN & have done a shitload of fast ropes onto vessels. I agree with the criticisms raised here but would like to point out 1 flaw in US fast roping style. Boots on the rope. I agree a lot of immaturity as many watched too many movies. The most professionnal and mature US personnel to me are from the Navy.
Usually good guys, not show offs, rarely enlisted because of movies like you can see in other US SOF units but rather tradition or passion.
