It's weird, I seem to remember the basses having the melody for almost 2 minutes at the end but you wouldn't be able to tell it by this performance. Good thing the brass pedals were loud enough to obscure that pesky melody though. /sarc I'll chalk it up to the video compression killing bass response though and not poor conducting. (I hope) Tuckwell conducting LSO is still the best performance of this outside of Furtwaengler in the 40's
Look, we have our very own 21st century Furtwangler! Foerster hits the nail on the head...I can't understandsuccess. Although not informed as I would like to be, I hope they haven't or do engage him in Bayreuth....Note: I admire and respect Maestro Tielemann for the act of bringing and furthering music, just as I equally admire Furtwangler, but my god, respect the composer.
@gvvt Oh you bet its the Vienna Phil! Rainer Küchl and Werner Fink in the front,Wolfgang Herzer leading the cellos and the golden flute of Wolfgang Schultz just to mention a few standard players, and then look closer at the Vienna horns - plus the fact that they are playing in the Vienna State Opera at the 50 year anniversary Gala from 2005
I saw this broadcast on TV. I know what it is. It's the 50th anniversary gala of the reopening of the Vienna State Opera, from 2005. In was broadcast on PBS in the fall of 2006.

one thing nice about listening to Wagner's music with no sets, etc--is that there are no modernist directors to f--- up the experience!!!
