Lovely sub tone clarinet intro - is that by Freddie Gardner? Al Bowlly at his very best. Such a fine recording for the technology of the time too. A real classic. Thank you Lineofsight.
I am a newbie to Al Bowlly and now I have my Dad hooked on even thought he's a Crosby fan, ...now he's very impressed with Al ...I read somewhere an observer said he had tears in his eyes after he sang 'I believe it" what sincerity ...sad ending for a great talent at least it was quick...it deprived the world of wonderful tenor....
There were some great voices and music of the 30s, but none came near to Al Bowlly and it doesn't seem to matter which orchestra he recorded with - he was that good!
The Fabulous and reverential song styling of the combo of Ray Noble and the unforgettable voice of Al Bowlly make this tune outstanding in every way. They were the real British invasion in the early 1930's as opposed to the false one of 1964!!
I first heard this recording when I was in high school around 1969. I soon discovered Ray Noble's 78's had been re-issued on LP by Monmouth Evergreen records. Thank you for posting.
How could we ever forget him - he was the greatest ;) Thank you for making this lovely tribute, especially today on the anniversary of his premature death in an air raid on London.
He was killed during a bombing raid, Hotty - he was in bed reading a book at about 2:00 am when the raid started, and was killed when a landmine floated down into the street outside in Dukes Court, St. James. He was thrown out of bed by the force of the explosion, but there were no marks on his body.
@hotty198 He died as the result of concussion form a german bomb that hit his apartment in London....the shock wave must've been sufficient to possibly throw him across the room and ht is head....who knows...

Oh, what a classy blast it is. It's beautifully haunting to hear him sing this farewell song.
