DeSoto's fins are legendary. There used to be a comic strip that often featured them. This a beautiful example...red & white no less! It was the color contrast that excentuated that Virgil Exner styling that blew GM out of the water...to the point that Harley Earl overreacted and brought out the 59 Caddy...scary!
BTW: I'd want to re-route the exhausts back to the bumper exhaust outlets. Sweet car tho!!!
The '59 Caddy may have had bigger fins, but no body integrated fins into the body like Virgil Exner's Chryslers, DeSotos, Plymouths, Dodges and Imperials. The fins were completely a part of the car's design, not the tacky add on the Caddy's obviously was.
@elmerhdga I know all about Cadillac's fins. I'm not the only person of this opinion. Most of the automotive press during that period shared my sentiments. As a matter of fact, GM designers were so caught off guard by Chrysler's fantastic designs, they went back to their studios and tore up the upcoming 1959 face lifts. This is why the 1958 dies were a one year only design.
@itsmegp46 You got back to me alright, but you ignored totally the points that I made about the 56 and 57 El Dorado specially-integrated tail fins on exquisitely beautiful automobiles. But, here is Your Problem, you are projecting a Mopar/GM managerial styling war in terms of things that are more political, and likely to be perpetuated by modern-day hacks. Take A Look at the Beautiful 56 and 57(and 58) Cad beauty and then look at a 56-57-58 Dodge/DeSoto/Chrysler and speak some truthful words.
@inoldswetrust A Diesel? NO, it is NOT a diesel, do you hear the DETONATION of un-sparked fuel ? The damned Rattling of 400 tins cans full of small rocks? Certainly Not. What we do hear is mild rather steady murmur of a 361 Mopar V8, running on common gasoline. (and with a microphone nearer to the 2 exhaust pipes than anywhere else.)
The '59 Caddy might have an inch in height, but the over all fin is much bigger on the '58 DeSoto, it went at least 1/2 the length of the car! I have both models in my yard, but alas my DeSoto is a '59 so I can't be certain, either way American cars of the late 50s & early 60s had some of the best styling!!! Keep it real & Keep the rubber side Down!
The fire department in my town in 1958 used this model Desoto as their chiefs car. They kept it for 5 years then sold it. 15 years later it was recovered in someones back yard by a former fireman of this fire department who resored it and used it in Parades.
@hanleyfallsmn56245 We need to start making things more like in the old days, not of course meaning to make stuff like this Desoto, but with craftsmanship, METAL, and DETAILS!
My Dad Had a Green and white 2 door Hardtop with the Hemi. Power windows Air conditioning, push Button Automatic, Power seats. Good Solid dependable Car. The gas Gauge didn't work so My Mother would Put a Dollars worth of gas in it anytime she went anywhere. One Saturday Dad was going to take the family on an Outing but decided to go fill up with gas before going anywhere. Well it wouldn't hold a Dollars worth. Gas at the time was About 27 or 28 cents a gallon for premium.
Nomasain: Yes, originally, they did - but most of these eventually were prone to rust-through due to the gasses and gunk that the exhaust left on the chrome, eating away the metal. I can see why this guy would think twice about re-routing them back through that way - although it WAS super-cool. 57 Buicks had this feature, too if you can see a pic of one.
Could never figure out why the mid fifties Chevvies commanded such high prices. They were short and high with awful rooflines and usually loaded with chrome. I called `em circus cars. Gimme the Chryslers anytime, long, wide and low.
That engine sounds GREAT! So many on here the valves are clattering
like a sewing machine about to fly apart, but that engine sounds like
I remember them back in the day.

And the original sticker price for the car was under $4,000.
yootoob1958 6 months ago
@yootoob1958 $4,000 was a lot of money in 1958. A basic Ford or Chevy was less than $2,000.

Arent the exhaust pipes/gasses supposed to come out from underneath the tail lights?
I believe the rear bumper is modified to house the exhaust.
